I'm no tile expert, but I watch them on TV! Actually, I've set a fair number of counters and backsplashes at this point, but have yet to tackle a bathroom. My take is it would be very impressive if you didn't have regrets about cheaping out. Getting an exact match of tile, and then setting it from the existing tile down, rather than up like most tile is set, would be daunting. The 1st 2 contractors were probably right to not offer that, a clean job over a gutted shower would most likely be a better investment, especially if they use the newer tech Kerdi shower membranes that would never leak.

Thanks for everyone's input!!! Really appreciate all the feedback.

We're now planning to check out Home Depot and Nemo Tile in NYC this weekend, just to get an idea of what we can get and prices, and potentially do some pricing comparison online afterwards. If that doesn't work (ie we still can't find what we want), we'll have to visit the other places in NJ - but sounds like we should get a friend with a car involved (and buy him lunch

Also - figure I'd post this question here too:
Our shower has been leaking water downstairs, and we've gotten several contractors in for estimates. All of the contractors said the pan is leaking and therefore needs to be completely re-done. However, the first two quoted me prices on re-doing the entire shower. The last contractor came in and said we have the choice to either re-do the whole thing (as the first two), or just do the bottom half of the shower (and tiles) and the pan - that we could leave the mid- to upper half of the shower un-touched. (Note: the first two contractors never offered me this option).

We're not experts at all in this type of things, and is wondering if anyone has advice to offer as whether we really need to do the whole shower, or can just do the lower half (of course, saving some money in the process). Our goal is to spend the necessary money now to do the right thing, and hopefully not worry about it for years! Does that mean we should re-do the whole shower?

I hope the rambling above makes sense...

TIA again!!!

If you know the short cuts you can bang up there in 25 minutes or less. From the Heights I can get there in less than 15 minutes. Please don't make it sound as if you are going to Timbuktu.

By PUBLIC transit?

Oh, sorry I wasn't thinking. I figured you were going by car.

I got great looking porcelain 6x6 there for only $0.50 apiece, and black bath trim tiles no one else had.
Googlemaps shows 45-60 minutes from Downtown by public, with various routes. How much tile are you planning to buy? Got a handtruck? The stuff IS heavy! Maybe some of these places might deliver, or you can go and choose and have your contractor pick it up.

Sometimes you have to go a bit beyond to get what you want, but 45 to an hour to get there, that just bizare ! If you know the short cuts you can bang up there in 25 minutes or less. Standard Tile on Kennedy up by Nelson has great selection. I would guess there's a bus in that direction.

I stopped by Kennedy Tile last week to check out selection and inquire if they had something I had seen in Manhattan. They claimed that they couldn't really order anything special - that was something "fancy" that only Manhattan would have. Barely even looked at it.

Walking around was dusty and difficult. Tile samples piled up on top of each other, displays tippy if trying to flip through sample boxes. They didn't seem to want new business or are just willing to work with contractors. And they don't install tile - just counters.

Sales lady could have said something between phone calls she was making to have me come by another time when not short handed - but she didn't. I tried to give them business but I walked out with nothing.

Tile Wholesalers of Newark is very good. I think you can get there via the #1 bus.

Kennedy Tile is nothing to write home about in terms of selection/price. Unless you're going for high end tile, try any Home Depot or Lowes, about the same as Kennedy or any other run of the mill tile place. There are a few HDs and Lowes locally (Rt 440 and near the Holland Tunnel). If you can't get to them try Home Depot in NYC. If you're looking for high end tile, try Nemo Tile in NYC (around 20th St.).

We've been recommended to get our bathroom tiles from kennedy Tiles on 1/9. However, we don't have a car (and an expired liencese does not allow us to rent a car either)

Does anyone has recommendations on where else to go to get tiles that's more public transportation friendly?

Also, if we do have to go to Kennedy Tiles, I'm thinking we can get a taxi as a last resort. But does anyone know how much that would cost (round trip)?

Thanks in advance.
