An underground transformer exploded in Downtown Jersey City near Newport this afternoon, with the tremor lifting nearby manhole covers, according to a top fire official.
PSE&G is on the scene, and the Jersey City Fire Department is standing by in case it needs to assist, said Fire Director Armando Roman.
The explosion occurred at about 3:25 p.m. near JP Morgan Chase, at 575 Washington Blvd, and knocked out power to that building, forcing it to rely on emergency generators, Roman said.Explosion
