Jersey City mayor urges residents to attending public hearings on state Legislature apportionment

February 10, 2011, 3:22 PM
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy today urged residents to attend a public hearing on Sunday that will feature a discussion on the upcoming re-drawing of New Jersey's legislative districts.

"We must protect our fair and equal representation in the Legislature," Healy said in a statement. "Despite the very short notice, I am asking you to attend and be heard."

On Monday, the state Legislature Apportionment Commission announced it will hold a public hearing on the matter on Sunday, Feb. 13 at Hudson County Community College Culinary Center, 161 Newkirk Street.

Districts within each state must be redrawn to reflect population changes found the release of U.S. Census bureau data. The commission will decide how to redraw New Jersey's legislative districts to keep an equal population in each district.
