Thanks for your input, everybody. Much-appreciated.

On last Monday's trash night, a couple of guys (hired by the landlord, maybe?) came by and took about 2/3 of the pile to the street. They didn't show up again, so on Thursday, a neighbor and I suited up in boots and gloves and removed the rest of the trash.

It irked the hell out of me to clean up after a consistently inconsiderate neighbor, but it's good to be rid of the pile.

I called the inspector a few times and they said they were trying to reach the owner of the building to issue fines. You and your neighbors must keep following up...good luck!

A ticket can only be issued to an actual name not a cooporation. So lots of home owners "rubber stamp" their name such as ie: 5 Main St. Inc. LLC. this way they get out of a ticket by hiding behind the Inc, and if they do get in trouble the LLC part keeps all problems within the said property and not towards anything else they own, this way they don't get wiped out because of one "little" property.

Call the N.I.D. (201) 547-5683 will take pictureds of the property and send a ticket. They will also send a work order for the J.C.I.A. to clean it up immediately after a "notice" has been sent to the property owner. Also call the Mayor's Office (201) 547-4900 they too will create a work order. You could also call the Housing Code Authority (201) 547-4825. By creating a huge paper trail you will get everyone in on the act...of cleaning up this mess. The number to the City of Jersey City's operator is (201) 547-5000 they can connect you to any city agency.

This was the point I was going to make, but I got timed out and walked away.

Or, hire a hauling company or some bozos on the street or me and some fat-ass-dude to take care of it. Wouldn't take much.

Go to the online Jersey City tax search website. Find out who the owner is and send them a registered letter politely alerting them to the fact that there is a growing and smelly heap of trash outside of their home.

They may be absentee owners, in foreclosure, elderly, etc. and not know (I'm giving them the benefit of a doubt).

If they don't respond by clearing up the mess, get your neighbors together and clean it up. It will be to the benefit of the community and you'll rack of good nature karma points!

Good luck.

you are a good soul. I pick up so much random trash off of my stoop and surrounding area on a daily basis, dunno if I could be moved to haul out an entire heap of my neighbors' garbage, just on principal. but if it smells as bad as Biscuit says, it may be his/her only option.

If that link doesn't work right, its in the Online Help Center on the official JC site. You can attach a photo of the hideous pile of refuse. I used this once to report an abandoned apartment house that was collecting garbage in the vestibule and trash was spilling out onto the side walk. It took them about a week I think, but the city cleaned the garbage and the building owner got a nice big bill. I like that. If you create a login, you can check the progress of your request online.

thanks! getting on it right now.

I've used the online help center; it's hit-or-miss. You can also call the Action Helpline Tel: (201) 547-4900/5555. I have had good luck here.

I had to deal with a similar situation and unfortunately there's not much more you can do. I have an abandoned building next to my place that had trash dumped in the alleyway. I called the JCIA and they said they had to send an inspector out...long story short it took about 4-6 weeks to get cleaned up, I called the inspector a few times and they said they were trying to reach the owner of the building to issue fines. You and your neighbors must keep following up...good luck!

Hi all. Looking for suggestions. The building next-door to me has slowly been shedding tenants, and now looks completely abandoned. They left behind a souvenir: a huge mountain of trash and trash bags.

(for those keeping score, this is the same moldering trash heap that a FedEx guy hid my delivery under last week. So it hasn't been completely without use.)

The trash is not visible from the street. It's crowded outside the door of the basement-level apartment. I see - and smell - it from my stoop, as do the neighbors on the other side.

I and several neighbors have called the JC Incinerator Authority numerous times, and keep getting told "we'll send an inspector out." Because a warning or a summons is going to have a big effect on an abandoned home.

it's been a month now, and the stench is getting worse. How do I get somebody out here to actually *get rid of* this mess, rather than just inspect it?
