Heavy fire, water damage in blaze at Society Hill

A fire that started in a furnace area in a townhouse in JC SH complex caused heavy damage to two floors of the three-story building yesterday morning, officials said.

Firefighters responding at 8:13 a.m. to the blaze at 101 Cherry St. found fire in a closet that housed a furnace on the building?s second floor, Fire Director Armando Roman said.

Before the flames were under control at 8:37 a.m. the fire had spread up into the building?s third floor, Roman said.

The second and third floor suffered heavy fire and water damage, but the residents were able to return home, Roman said, adding that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
