City to add 3 more surveillance cameras in high-crime areas

by The Jersey Journal
Monday May 11, 2009, 12:36 PM

Jersey City has installed six surveillance cameras in what police say are high-crime areas, the city announced.

The new cameras -- two each in the housing complexes at Montgomery Gardens and Booker T. Washington and Bayside Park/Richard Street -- bring the total of closed-circuit cameras in the city to 73.

The cameras and their installation was paid for with a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice under the Targeting Violent Crime Initiative.

It is part of a larger initiative to target violent crime. The city said it's awaiting approval from the state to install an additional 50 CCTV cameras with Urban Enterprise Zone funding. Police Lt. Edgar Martinez said the rest of the housing complexes are sites that will be included when more cameras are added.
