FYI, from NJCU:

Quote:

New Jersey City University

Public Safety Department

Crime Prevention Alert

Community Crime Information

On Sunday, May 3, 2009 at approximately 1:42 a.m. the Jersey City Police reported that two NJCU non-resident students were victims of an armed robbery at the intersection of Culver and West Side Avenues. The students reported that they were approached by four males and held up at gunpoint. The four suspects were last seen by the students fleeing on foot southbound on West Side Avenue.

The four suspects were described as four black males ranging in height from 5’10” to 6’0” tall, 16 to 18 years old, wearing black hooded sweatshirts, black gloves, and jeans.

The JCPD responded and is investigating the matter. The University has requested that the JCPD provide extra patrols of the area.

The NJCU Public Safety Department is concerned for our community as well as the community-at-large. While the incident occurred off campus, we have placed our Public Safety officers on a heightened state of alert. The Public Safety Department is available to provide security escorts (call extension 3128). Crime prevention brochures are available to our community.

Public Safety will continue to provide information on personal safety and crime prevention through talks and presentations by our officers.

Some Basic Security Tips:
Stay alert. Walk in well-lit areas. Keep your mind on your surroundings, who’s in front of you and who’s behind you. Don’t get distracted.
Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave.
If you suspect you’re being followed by someone on foot, cross the street and head for the nearest well-lit, populated area. Locate a store and call the police, if possible.

okay, i am not supporting Healy this time, but i have to admit. There are more police than there used to be. Still not enough but more than there were.

Besides, you cannot have police in every corner. In an area like NJCU after hours you have to think first.

To all you Obama supporters, he is delivering the same change Obama will deliver in 4 years. Just look at the ads and Obama's endorsement.

You go out in that area because our joke of Mayor has crime under control and the streets are safe as he kept his last campaign promise and have the police walking the beat. I believe he made that same promise again.

Thieves take money, cell from students
Monday, May 04, 2009

Two New Jersey City University students were robbed at gunpoint yesterday, police reports said.

The 24- and 25-year-old victims told police four teens approached them at West Side and Culver avenues at 1:40 a.m., reports said. One teen pointed a gun and ordered the students to give up their possessions, reports said. The victims handed over a wallet with $45 in cash and a cell phone.
