FJB Comics & Games
This tiny, airless shop caters to garden-variety geeks with its Marvel, Dark Horse, Wii and Xbox offerings, but that?s not why we?re guessing they flock here week after week: Owner Floyd J. Bennett occasionally has a Rock Band setup in the middle of the floor, and any neighborhood kid (or, okay, adult) is welcome to join in the jam session. 17 Coles St between Columbus and 1st Sts (201-946-2200, www.fjbcomics.com

Airless? Airless? I'll have you know we have plenty of air here...we just charge alittle extra for it sometimes. =p

I would say that the keyhole is great for really cheap beers - but there can sometimes be some crazy characters in there.

Santos y Ana - now you are talking - but I don't think anyone actually drinks in there - just out front!

View Best independent shops: Jersey City in a larger map Best independent shops: Jersey City By Ashlea Halpern Time Out New York Issue 707 : Apr 16?22, 2009 Shopping guide '09 Public School ?We got a sayin? here,? explains proprietor Jersey (?just Jersey?). ?The recession: We?re not participating.? That may be, but he?s still offering deals: $50 Kidrobot tees for $30; and tunics, hoodies and kicks from high-cred labels like Sup and Greedy Genius for a fraction of their suggested retail. Also upping the fresh factor: Naked and Famous straight-leg jeans are kept in a custom-designed fridge. 593 Jersey Ave at 4th St (201-876-8400) The Stockinette Knitting Caf? This homey caf? entices freelancers with its mini potpies, tufted cushions and free Wi-Fi. Stockinette also makes good on its name, selling knitting mags and pattern books ($6.99?$18), aluminum and bamboo needles ($5.25?$20), and a rainbow of Debbie Bliss, Schaefer and Misti Alpaca yarns ($8.95?$54). Bonus: Knitting noobs can sign up for a starter class at the register (four hours for $65). 581 Jersey Ave at 3rd St (201-792-5648, www.thestockinette.com ) Hudson County Art Supply No wider than a subway car, this cramped spot is JC?s premier place for basic art supplies like canvas and spray paint, as well as kitschy Royal & Langnickel paint-by-numbers sets ($7.99). Remember to snap a new Facebook pic in front of the store?s impressive 30-foot-wide mural, painted by pop jammers Ron English, Jason Maloney and Big Foot. 303 1st St at Coles St (201-413-0900, www.hudcoart.com ) Iggi Olorun This 42-year-old botanica smells like tradition?or maybe that?s just its kaleidoscopic selection of spiritual bath salts ($6), cinnamon soaps ($3?$5), jinx-busting oils ($2.50), prayer candles (starting at $2), and see-through buckets of cure-alls like myrrh, sulfur and yerba buena. Believers also stop by to drop $1 and $5 bills at the altars of the Seven African Powers, or to have the ashes of friends and family members blessed. 332B Barrow St between Christopher Columbus Dr and Newark Ave (201-309-0909) Antique Reflections and Video Rent All Joe and Patty Bustamante combined their Hoboken antiques biz and Jersey City video store six years ago. Now the front half of their shop boasts antique furniture; the back half is DVDs aplenty, including a notable porn selection. Conveniently, you can score $4.99 to $6.99 movies (Corky Romano, Josie and the Pussycats, Barb Wire) and a bedroom suite under one roof. 129 Christopher Columbus Dr between Barrow and Grove Sts (Antiques: 201-432-4222, Video Rent All: 201-432-6533) Another Man?s Treasure Bob Dylan crankin? on the 33 helps set the mood at Meika and Warren Franz?s knockout vintage boutique. We especially love their selection of suspenders and bow ties ($10?$15), one-piece swimsuits from the ?50s through ?80s ($25?$45), Chinese silk embroidered kimonos ($34?$55), Valley of the Dolls translucent nightgowns ($45) and Valentino candy-striper sunglasses ($35). 353 Grove St between Bay and 1st Sts (201-860-9990, www.amtvintage.com ) Antheia Floral Design If you?re an avid reader of bridal magazines, Angela Schwartz?s minuscule shop is probably no secret. For the rest of us, the delicately sloping calendula, melon-size artichokes, dusky amnesia roses, pink-edged ranunculus, French tulips, fresh lavender and baby cacti filling the shop make for a breathtaking surprise. Be prepared to fall in love with the giant South African protea?as well as Schwartz?s cat, Hobo, who can be found sunning himself in the windows. 218 Montgomery St at Grove St (201-309-9959, www.antheia.net ) FJB Comics & Games This tiny, airless shop caters to garden-variety geeks with its Marvel, Dark Horse, Wii and Xbox offerings, but that?s not why we?re guessing they flock here week after week: Owner Floyd J. Bennett occasionally has a Rock Band setup in the middle of the floor, and any neighborhood kid (or, okay, adult) is welcome to join in the jam session. 17 Coles St between Columbus and 1st Sts (201-946-2200, www.fjbcomics.com ) Made with Love This organic bakery is less than two years old, and already it?s at the top of other JC shopkeepers? must lists. Owner Celeste Governanti regularly hosts live jazz sessions and cooking classes with local chefs, not to mention making a kick-ass pear galette ($4 a slice), fragrant fougasse stuffed with olives or sun-dried tomatoes ($7 a loaf) and righteously healthy dog biscuits in human-tempting flavors like honey peanut butter (12 for $6.50). 530 Jersey Ave between Christopher Columbus Dr and Newark St (201-850-3260, www.madewithloveorganics.com ) Iris Records Dig where the crate-diggers dig?in a onetime apothecary open only on weekends?and you?ll be rewarded with thousands of 12-inches from every conceivable genre, many marked between $1 and $10. So that?s why Frankie Bones has made it a staple. 114 Brunswick St between 1st and 2nd Sts (201-217-0588, www.irisrecs.com ) Skin Organix Owner Michelle Williams-Burrows has assembled a gushworthy collection of all-natural bath and suncare goodies, including Pangea Organics soaps in blends such as Canadian Pine with White Sage and Oatmeal with Italian Bergamot ($7.99 each), along with Patyka organic perfumes ($52 each) and creative toothpastes (Miessence?s anise, $9.95; Weleda?s salt toothpaste, $6). The shop-cum-salon also offers 25-minute facials ($25). 297 Grove St between Mercer and Wayne Sts (201-946-9000, www.skinorganix.com ) Fish with Braids Gallery Uta Brauser?s itty-bitty gallery specializes in local art and quirky gifts. Go here if you want a fish stapler ($15), a windup robot toy ($12), or felt hats shaped like frogs, dogs, sharks, dinosaurs, elves and more ($20?$45). The latter are handmade by Brauser herself. 521 Jersey Ave at Christopher Columbus Dr (201-451-4294, www.fishwithbraids.blogspot.com ) Tia?s Place Look past this boutique?s abundance of strappy B&T tops and you?ll unearth some real keepers, including Betty Rubble?style necklaces in kelly green, periwinkle and sunshine yellow ($32); Campana zigzag silver jelly flats ($55); and a to-die-for Spiewak Benton trench in pearlescent coral ($125). Also available: threads by Trina Turk, ruffled pinup panties ($14) and chunky wooden rings ($10). 277 Grove St between Mercer and Montgomery Sts (201-451-9358, www.tiasplace.com ) Where to eat Sri Ganesh?s Dosa House While the restaurant?s namesake?a delicate oversized cr?pe stuffed with an assortment of fillings?is Dosa House?s biggest draw, other Southern Indian vegetarian delicacies, like idli and sambal, make for enticing variety. 809 Newark Ave between Liberty and Tonnele Aves, Jersey City, NJ (201-222-3883) Beechwood Caf? and Market French pastoral wallpaper adorns this market/coffeeshop/restaurant, which hawks candles and baskets?but also strong coffee, giant pastries, brunch plates, and lunch and dinner options. Snag a table outside to watch JC?s small-town vibe in action. 290 Grove St between Mercer and Wayne Sts, Jersey City, NJ (201-985-2811) Taqueria Downtown Heavenly posole and juicy cactus, fish and lamb tacos await those who aren?t turned off by the attitudinous menu (?no tableside guacamole show? is listed among its Los Diez Mandamientos) at this no-frills eatery, run by a rocker couple from L.A. and Mexico City. The walls are matted with GNR, Van Halen and Skid Row ephemera; accordingly, if you show the staff a M?tley Cr?e ticket stub, they?ll give you a free taco. 236 Grove St at Grand St, Jersey City, NJ (201-333-3220) There are nice photos at the TONY site: http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/s ... t-shopping-in-jersey-city ======================== I know with such a big list they had to miss some places but I would have added: Madame Claude's http://www.madameclaudecafe.com Metropolis Music http://www.metropolisnj.com 58 Gallery http://www.fifty8.com Nines Lives' Skate Shop http://skatespotter.com/spot/jersey-city-nine-lives-617.html Boomerang Vintage on Brunswick and many, many others...
