why rumble strips - which seem designed for optimum neighbor annoyance, without deterring speeders - and not just a couple of good old-fashioned speed bumps?

One of my neighbors had these in front of his house on Coles Street. He threw a fit and the city removed them. They were shaking his house.

I have the same question: Why Jersey Avenue? Jersey Avenue needs "No Trucking" signs, not noise strips.
Eighth Street and Ninth Street. Now those two streets NEED noise strips.

Umm isn't it supposed to be a distraction, ahem, an alert, to make drivers more aware of an approaching intersection.

I wonder if the DPW did any studies before putting these noise strips in place. I don't recall anyone standing around and clocking speeders on Jersey Ave. I don't even recall any equipment set up for such. Or even a radar that reports your speed as you drive by.

There haven't been any police pulling over speeders as far as I know.

So my question is, just why did they put these in?

Wow. Look at Jersey Ave now. Just a few days after our posts and now there are rumble strips on both sides of the street. I bet they are going to say that they just needed to finish the job.

Anyhow, we have 6 of them on our block (3 on either side). It is the most annoying sound ever as cars are still speeding over them and not even considering slowing down.

I think the HCA and Fulop will be getting calls and emails over these.

Have these strips been put in any other section of Downtown, or just on Jersey Ave?

the strips are in a historic district.

If people would like to comment (those in favor, opposed, etc),

first, email Harsimus Cove Association at
HarsimusCoveAssociation-owner@yahoogroups.com

And it will be added to the agenda of the HCA's special meeting on August 20.

Yes I noticed the same thing with the rumble strips. I assume they are less about speed and more for alerting drivers to crosswalks and the pedestrians in them. However, I think you are completely right about the strips being installed on the wrong side of the intersection.

Also, why would they spend the money to install these things when Jersey Avenue is torn up with potholes?

My two year old thinks they tickle when we ride over them in the bike. Not very effective for speed reduction though.

i suppose these were intended to slow the traffic? it seems like a waste to me, these strips are not large enough to get people to slow down to drive over them. i saw cars speeding right over them as if they were not even there...

Aren't these the same kind of speed bumps that the DoT refused to install on Erie? They said the vibrations from the tires going over them could cause damage to the buildings since it's in a historic district?

Last time I checked the area on Jersey where the strips are is indeed in a historic disrict.

I've been away for a few weeks and just noticed the new rumble strips placed along Jersey Ave. Now, I'm no street engineer, but aren't they supposed to be placed so a vehicle passes over them before the intersection, rather than right after? Or did they think that placing them that far back would give drivers ample time to slow down?

Poor planning on the city's part as I watched vehicles speed right over them or, more dangerously, go into the opposing lanes to avoid them. If they city was going to take this route, maybe speed humps would have been more appropriate. Better yet, how about this city stops being so cheap (considering all the money they scam in taxes from us and do not return to us in any form of decent service), and put up some lights and/or stops signs.
