Arrest made in wake of fatal shooting probe, police say

by Michaelangelo Conte
Monday November 05

County homicide detectives investigating last month's fatal shooting of Michael Hemingway Jr. in Jersey City have arrested a man on weapons charges after tracking him down to speak to him in connection to the murder case, officials said today.

Investigators wanting to speak to Laquan Clark, 22, most recently of Bramhall Avenue, tracked him down to a relatives' home on Wegman Court yesterday morning, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said today.

Police found him in possession of a handgun and arrested him on weapons charges, including possession of a firearm by a felon, DeFazio said.

No one has been charged with killing Hemingway Jr., who apparently argued with a "young adult male" on Fa0irmount Avenue on the night of Oct. 23, police said. The perosn he argued with pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and fired three rounds, striking Hemingway Jr. once in the head and once in the chest, DeFazio said.

Hemingway was already dead when emergency medical technicians arrive at the scene, officials said. There were numerous witnesses saw the shooting, DeFazio said.

Clark was in prison from Aug., 2003 to Feb. 4, 2006 on drug dealing charges, corrections officials said. Hemingway Jr. also went by the name "Dashawn Hemingway."

Anyone with information on the homicide is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

It is a NON named area, so calling it Lincoln Park was close enough.

Homeless man shot dead, officials say

Jersey Journal
Michaelangelo Conte
Wednesday October 24

A Jersey City man was gunned down on the street last night and with bullet wounds to his head and chest, he was already dead when emergency medical technicians got to the scene, officials said.

Michael Hemingway Jr., 27, who was apparently homeless, was killed at Fairmont Avenue and Boland Street at just before 10:20 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said today.

Hemingway apparently got into an argument with a "young adult male" and the man took out a .380 semi-automatic and fired three rounds, striking Hemingway once in the head and once in the chest, DeFazio said.Three spent shell casings were found at the scene.

There were numerous witnesses to the shooting and homicide detectives have interviewed a number of them but, as of this morning, no warrant has been issued in connection to the fatal shooting, DeFazio said.

The shooter was with another man and they may have been riding bikes because two bikes were found not far from the site of the homicide, DeFazio said.

Investigators are not sure what the men had argued about but they do know that the confrontation had not turned physical at the time the man pulled the gun, DeFazio said.

Hemingway, who also goes by the name "Dashawn Hemingway" was in prison from Jan. 31, 2003, to Oct. 8, 2003; June 7, 2004 to Nov. 30, 2004; and June 7, 2004 to July 16, 2006, state corrections officials said.

He has three convictions for dealing drugs near schools and one for receiving stolen property, officials said.

Anyone with information on the homicide is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office at (201) 915-1345.
