I was considering a gym membership, but having had bad experiences in the past I am hesitant to go into an office for a strong armed sales pitch. Just wondering if anyone can give me some details on ballpark figure prices and selling points so I can decide where I want to go in and visit.

I was considering Club Metro, Brick Haus & Synergy. If you don't want to post the price of your membership you could pm me. Any info and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I've seen Club H frequently have sales for $799 for 12 months. This year, I even saw $699 for 12 months at one point. I know Club H is not your list, but just want to post as FYI.

I paid 800 a year ago at Brick Hauss for 13 months. To get that rate, I had to pay in full.

Before I was rich enough for Brick Hauss, I went to synergy and haggled them down to 300 for the year - paid in full. - That was about 2 years ago but it's all possible.

Synergy gets cramped during rush hours. I worked out at 12AM so no one was really there.

Jaker, definitely check out Club Metro USA. Full disclosure, I work there, but we do not strong arm...nor do we bring you into a secluded office to pressure you. Its very informal.

Prices range from only $29 - $39 per month. It may not have all of the amenities of your $80-$100/month facilities (swimming pool, steam room), but the equipment, cleanliness, price, hours, juice bar and friendly staff are second to none in the area. It's also the newest of all those gyms, so not only is the equipment brand new and state-of-the-art, but the gym is never crowded as the membership base is smaller.

It's also the only place in downtown Jersey City to go indoor tanning, if you are interested in that.

From everything I've read and from personal experience, these are about the prices you will pay for one year, though H and Metro are the only ones I've actually gotten quotes from. I'm at Metro now and it's never been too crowded. Equipment is all pretty new and in good condition. Only problem is the men's room stinks of sweat in the summer since there's no ventilation.

Club H: $1000
Brick Haus: $800
Club Metro: $500
Synergy: $400

I'll second this. Rates are unbeatable...to the point that if you don't go you don't feel guilty, which is kind of a catch-22.

The only complaint I have is that they have no classes. While space is an issue for this request, they should at LEAST have outdoor classes (ie: bootcamp) in the summer. I'd highly recommend this gym if all you want is cardio and weight equipment.

I'm surprised no one on here mentioned the boxing gym on Division (edge of Downtown)...Club Metro is not the only gym with indoor tanning in downtown JC. Not only does the boxing gym have indoor tanning (free, unlimited with 12-month membership I believe), but it's the only gym with parking.

Club metro has free parking in the lot directly across the street.

JCWalkman...I did not know the boxing gym had tanning. However, I was really just comparing the surrounding facilities Synergy, Club H, Sports Club, Newport, etc.

And yes, Club Metro USA does have free parking.
