Although I would support a petition requesting the removal of the wall of ice/snow on our street, I’m very curious how your web site was able to identify my personal information in order to sign this petition, even though I wasn’t signed onto jclist?

It's not my website, but a free site for (Care2) petitions. Perhaps we cut and paste it and thereby bypass the website.

Here it is, we can do it independent of the website, the important thing is to collect enough sigatures so any ideas you have for codifying that is appreciated.

Target: Residents of Jersey City
Sponsored by: Residents of Jersey City
We, the citizens of Jersey City, request of our city officials, fundamental assistance in carrying on in our daily lives, with snow removal services to help us cope with the effects of 36" plus inches of snow that have accumulated in and around downtown Jersey City.

We propose to expand the very basic plowing service provided by the City, that the City implement snow removal throughout the downtown area, from the sidewalks and street, and transport it elsewhere, either into the two lots they have designated for this purpose, or via the DEP's offer to put the snow in the Hudson River, or any other designated city property designated for this purpose.

Simply plowing, under the weight of the excessive snow fall, has not alleviated the hazards now present to the citizens, including, 1) very limited passage on sidewalks, 2) very limited parking due to snow pile up, 3) excessive use of salt and other pollutants, 4) icy walkways that present danger to pedestrians, 5) fire hydrants buried in snow, 5) excessive amounts of litter and garbage, buried beneath a foot of snow or more.

We propose that the City implement snow removal services immediately.

Signatures:

1. Lynn Tell, Downtown JC.

I won’t sign it, because you ask for only downtown to be cleared. Why only downtown? The snow affects everyone in the entire city..

The city spends more energy sponsoring parades than removing snow. I remember some years ago probably in 1995, when the accumulated snow on a sidewalk and burst the gas pipe below the sidewalk. The sidewalks downtown are hollow and cannot support the weight of repeated snow storms, similar to snow building up on a flat roof.

the only consistent effort they've made is to try and clear off Columbus Ave for commuters, which benefits everyone but JC residents...

I signed the petition, thanks Telley for putting together. For those of you who take 5 min to bitch on JC List, put that to some use and sign it. Even if the City does nothing, at least it's making attempts at change.

Meanwhile, the Good Day NY crew is filming in Hoboken, where the city required all residents to move cars from 11th St so the snow can be completely removed. Cars that remain are currently being ticketed and towed.

Here you go Kitten, it's now changed. Unless you have other gripes, perhaps we can get back to the problem at hand, which is effecting change to let our desire for safe passage heard by our city officials.

Here it is, we can do it independent of the website, the important thing is to collect enough sigatures so any ideas you have for codifying that is appreciated.

I applaud you for your efforts, however:

a) If the petition is supposed to be city-wide then the author needs to make the change to city-wide. You can't just state modify it to city wide. If you want people to sign, it needs to be accurate.

b) Along the lines of accuracy, the state DEP never said it will allow snow to be dumped into the Hudson. It allows for the dumping into state waters. Again, this goes to accuracy. The petition needs to be well thought out, well written, and accurate. I ask the same of the government, and if we are to present something to the government, I expect it to follow the same standards.

c) Of the thirteen e-signatures, nine don't have NJ listed as their state and two aren't even from the Unites States. Does a petition to the city need to signed by residents of Jersey City with a Jersey city address

d) Have you posted this across multiple forums? I don't think you will get 1,000 signatures from JCList alone. And sadly, I don't think you would get the 1,000 signatures before the snow melt.

e) I've never used this site and don't know you, and am not comfortable providing personal information to a person, entity, or website without knowledge of the person, entity, or website. How do I actually know my information would end up on some junk mail list or something worse?

If the people are to sign a petition, it should be accurate. The title and body are inconsistent. Furthermore, it is the content of the body that is more important than the title. It needs to be fixed if people are going to take it seriously.

We, the citizens of Jersey City, request of our city officials, fundamental assistance in carrying on in our daily lives, with snow removal services to help us cope with the effects of 36" plus inches of snow that have accumulated in and around ALL OF Jersey City starting with kitten's street in the Heights.

We propose to expand the very basic plowing service provided by the City, that the City implement snow removal throughout our fair city, from the sidewalks and street, and transport it somewhere else, either into the two lots they have designated for this purpose, or via the DEP's offer to put the snow in the Hudson River, or any other designated city property designated for this purpose.

People should not sign a continuously changing petition. It needs to be done right before it goes to the public. The mere mention of changing a petition after people sign it completely usurps the integrity of the process.

Fraulein, I applaud Telley for the effort. However, there is a proper way to do things. Would you sign a petition knowing that after you sign it, the contents of the petition may be changed?

Also, when asking for signature on petitions and when presenting petitions, it should be done in a way that does not offend, insult, alienate, or divide the public. Although unintentional, the mere writing of downtown (and downtown only) in the petition gives the indication of separatism and elitism. It was not intentional, but that is how it was perceived. And I live downtown.

Telley had the best of intentions with the petition, but remember the road to Dante's Inferno is paved with good intentions.

Vigilante, good idea. I might throw in a few addresses on that site. Whether or not the city actually does anything, I don't know, but it is worth a try.

JC_DowntownRegular - There is a big difference between the contents being changed, and wordsmithing. Agreed worthsmithing makes a difference, but the premise and purpose would not change as your comment suggests.

For instance, the petition would not change from trying to effect snow removal to say, planting trees. All of the edits had one thing in common -- removing the limitedness of "downtown", which as you note (and has unfortunately become the 'theme' of a thread) offendeded some people. It is impossible to please everyone all of the time, although admittedly this was a bad typo.

So your points are well taken, however, I think blown out of context so as to over take the underpinning action, which was the petition that is now deleted.

Moot point because the petition is deleted, so we'll all have to find something new to criticize/talk about.

The petition is silly. The problem of snow blocking sidewalks is not. The city did an excellent job dealing with the snow on the road surfaces in the first day or two after the storms and it looks to me like motor vehicles were able to navigate the city soon after the storm ended. Not so pedestrians on the sidewalks. Merchants in the Journal Square area and along Newark all the way downtown get an “F” grade at clearing snow from their sidewalks. All the merchants shoveled out a yard-wide path along each of their sidewalks but that is NOT enough. A week or so after the snow stopped falling there was no additional shoveling, the sidewalks are still only just barely navigable for a healthy active person. This is not good enough as there are plenty of mobility challenged people who are held prisoner in their homes since they can’t use the sidewalks.
Whining about the city not doing their job is pointless. In this letter I want to shame the business owners who are not doing enough to remove the snow they are responsible for. I think the city should be tasked with shoveling paths through the snowbanks at every intersection, but a week has come and gone and they are not going to do it. I’m calling on the business owners to get of their asses and shovel out those intersections, I believe it is their moral responsibility if not a legal one.
Another note about bad behavior from the local merchants: With a sidewalk that is now only a few feet wide, why are you still putting out your sidewalk advertising signs? There is no reason you couldn’t put your dumb sandwich board signs on the vast areas you left unshoveled. but none of you do, preferring instead to block what little clear sidewalk remains.
Another note: I see the very large condos downtown all have well shoveled wide open sidewalks, the best job of sidewalk clearing in the city. all their loading bays and associated parking spots are meticulously clear of snow. But the intersections at their sidewalks are STILL unshoveled and pedestrians still have to limp across snowbanks to get to the crosswalks. Aren’t these the buildings that got sweetheart property tax avoiding incentives? If they paid any property taxes, some of that money would have gone to snow removal resources. Wouldn’t it be nice if these huge buildings with full time maintenance staffs could maybe do the right thing and shovel a path from their meticulously clean sidewalks through their snowbanks into the crosswalks?

If someone told me, 'hey, sign this petition, but it may change,' then no, I wouldn't sign it. But I trusted that Telley wasn't going to switch, 'snow removal' to 'give up your first born.' I didn't mind the continuous edits to have it represent all of JC and not just downtown. But I think the immediate jumping on the person instead of constructive criticism was over the top.

Has anyone noticed the large number of small trucks with plows and salt/sand spreaders cruising around today and during recent storms? Apparently the city bids out some amount of plowing and uses these guys - trucks with "Bob Loblaw's Landscaping, West Orange" or "Dino's Landscaping, Caldwell" or other such places on their doors.

The thing is - you'll see four or five of them come down the same street within fifteen minutes. They are out racking up hours (and lots of dollars) and there doesn't seem to be any coordination - some of them literally drive around the same two or three blocks for hours. Grand street was like a small snowplow rodeo this morning.

Then, when it's time to deal with the remaining mountains after the storm, the city claims it doesn't have the resources to finish the job....
