is there such a thing in jersey city? specifically, i've received two beautiful old typewriters that need serious cleaning (decades of dust). is there some place locally that anyone can recommend? thanks.

They are not local but I think typewriters have become such a niche field that its unlikely you will find a local vender.

I have ordered ribbons and spools from them before though I have not had my typewriters serviced there.

Like looking for someone to put tubes into radios.

But try it yourself because cleaning isn't hard...just power air and some solvents. The hard part is restoring keys (bending) so that everyting is lined up. But if any key heads are missing, it will be tough.

Ribbon can be bought in bulk and respooling isn't hard...just dirty.

Why would you want them what with the wonders of cheap black and white laser printers these days? Like wanting an old wind up watch that kept rotten time and needed a new mainspring every 2 years

I threw away an old Smith Corona that worked beautifully but nobody wanted it for free. It just wasn't worth the space in the closet.

Well i gave a $20 flea market noiseless remington to a place in montclair. I know its not JC but its the closest i found. The man who repairs it has been doing it all his life...back when he was in Cuba and Spain. He systematically told me all that could be done to fix it and how much the cost of each service was.
i have not received the typewriter back yet but i seen some of the other pieces waiting to be picked up and they looked good.
