JC has soul flavors. Its very good. the fried chicken is one of the best i have ever had. They are a bit on the pricey side, but very good.
your right, Sylvia's is not as good as it used to be. amy ruths is one that people always mention. They are decent. Shark bar in Manhattan solid. To tell you the truth, soul flavors might be one of the top ones in the area. The best is this spot in newark i used to go to, however, i cant remember the name. i will let you know if i think of it. oh and if your doing brunch, i think soul flavors has a special brunch menu which includes chicken and waffles! Ive been meaning to check that out. http://www.soulflavors.com/soul.html

Soul Flavors isn't really soul food imo. It reminds me of Maroon's in the city which is more of a blend of Southern and Caribbean cooking. It was tasty but doesn't compare to mom's homemade.
I've heard good things about Irma's on Communipaw in JC In the city, I'd recommend http://www.thepinkteacup.com/ Please try to remember the name of the place in Newark. I'd be interested in checking it out.

See i would definitely consider them soul food. Fried chicken, smothered fried chicken, grits, greens, yams.... they have all the usuals. But you are right, they do have some eclectic and Caribbean selections as well.
I will have to check out the pink tea cup.(just looked at the menu. it looks good) Do you know if the bacon they serve is that real thick southern style bacon? Also, another place that is good is Mannas on 125th st. its like a soul food buffet. good stuff. go hungry. oh and i will try and find out the name of the place.

Irma's, Communipaw Avenue between Monticello and Bergen.
There are a lot of soul food joints in JC, and some are pretty darned good. Some have more variety than Irma's, or are more consistent in what they serve. At Irma's, for instance, they don't always have the corn bread, dammit. They run out of lemonade sometimes. Sometimes, there's NO CAKE! And they DON'T always have all the side dishes that are on the menu. I don't care. When I get a hankering for greens and fried chicken, that's where I'm going. That's how good it is. I mean, the greens are PERFECT. And the chicken, well, yes, she uses lard. Crispy, tender, juicy. Stop me now... There are other great meals to be had at Irma's. I recommend the oxtails, pork chop, rice and gravy, lima beans, blackeyed peas. But you should go and read the menu and see what she's got that day. btw, no offense to Soul Flavors, where I consider the food to be very good. It has a fusion aspect to it that keeps it out of my classic soul food category.

+1!
![]() Irma's is little known by most downtown JCListers and they don't know what they're missing! Nothing against Soul Flavors either (more Caribbean than Southern), but as someone raised in the South you ain't et real soul food here till you go to Irma's! Quote:

Two places in Newark I know of Je's and Johns.. both have authentic soul food... I prefer Je's for breakfast... but here in JC.. it's has to be Irma's - Soul Flavors is overpriced and all soul food restaurants I've been to offer at least two side dishes as part of the meal.. went to Soul Flavors and the fried chicken was served on a plate without any sides...

South side of Communipaw Ave. From downtown, go west on Grand, right on Communipaw, up the hill, past the Crown Fried Chicken on the right. Cross Monticello Ave. at the next light. Irma's is on the right. The whole front wall is painted in bright colors. You can't miss it. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm. I'm tasting it right now. Let us know what you get.

Sorry. Wrong direction.
From West Side, go east on Communipaw three blocks -- Boulevard, Bergen, Monticello. It will be on your left before the light, across from the KFC.

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to thank "taste" and everyone else who recommended Irma's. We just had lunch there and it was REALLY good. We got the oxtails with yams/greens and the smothered pork chops with mixed peas/ mac n cheese. We washed it all down with lemonade and got a slice of sweet potato pie to go. The portions were huge and everything is inexpensive. We paid just under $25 + tip. The Tueday special is chicken and dumplings and I think the Wednesday special is spaghetti with crab. Irma's # is (201) 332-0044.

There seems to be a new place opening up on MLK right next to the lightrail drop off (walking toward the lightrail it will be on your left...walking toward Communipaw it will be on your right). It's called ... drum roll please...Soul Food... lol... It's not open yet but the outside looks nice and I've taken a couple of peeks in there while walking by and they are still setting up from what I can see... it looks pretty small inside though..
It will most likely be a pickup and go only...doesn't look like any place to sit...when it opens I'll definitely give them a try but they will have a hard time pulling people away from Irma's solid loyal client base... especially cause she is just right down the street. They better be on point from the day they open cause most people I know will only try it once before forming an opinion. If it's not good that first time they wont go back.... Don't know when they are having the grand opening but it should be soon...Good luck to them.

I took a better look at this place on my way to work today and it's called Kissey's(sp?) Cafe...and underneath that it says Soul Food...so that's a better name then I thought...gives me a better understanding of what the place is about...

There is also two places on Monticello.... one is closer to Communipaw... about a block down on the left called Soul food and fish.. they just opened up, and another about 3 blocks after that on the left also.... not sure what the name is, it has a green awning on the corner on Jewett and Monticello.... haven't tried any of those places yet I live right there... shame on me!

I tried the one closer to Communipaw...it was bad...it might have been because it was their first day open but it was very unorganized...food not done right... didn't have half the stuff on the menu...AND it was expensive (more expensive than Irma's... now if your going to try that your food better be out of this world) ... I haven't been back since.
Only went there the first time because an acquaintance knew the guys that were opening the place and told us to go there and try it...they might have improved since then but you should never open your doors until your absolutely ready. I'm all about supporting local business but that place... they ruined their reputation for me.

I try to avoid food cooked in lard but for those who like Soul Food - you might want to check out a new place just opening on Broadway in Bayonne - it is in a green free-standing building and it'll be called "Chicken and Waffles" - looks nice.
I've often thought about trying Irma's - is there anything on the menu for a vegetarian (stuff without ham or lard)?

i completely disagree. soul flavors is ALMOST tasty. the name is just completely misleading. soul no flavors is much more apt.
i'm southern and grew up on soul food and good home cookin'. you never want to go someplace that advertises soul food and when you ask for pepper jelly (a soul food staple), they look at you like you're crazy. you'd be better off with a pack of quaker quick grits, some shrimp, and the McCormack soul seasonings. Esp. since McDonalds has better sweet tea.

Grove Path, Irma's does have fish. It's fried. It's good. What can I say?
The mac and cheese probably is just dairy. About the beans and rice, etc. I would check with her about what she uses to cook them. I would bet at least some of them start with some kind of pork product.

Is pepper jelly a regional thing? My family is from GA and I don't recall ever having it. I was also a picky eater growing up so it's entirely possible that it was served to me and I wouldn't eat it and they never made another attempt. Just curious.
