When you say it is cheaper how are you calculating that?

I see Comcast offering 15Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload for $42.95 for month to month for current Comcast cable subscribers. You say Verizon costs $60.00 for similar, slower service without subscribing to their TV offering. Do you know how much it would be if you just got the $42.95 internet service from Comcast without cable service? Is it more than $18 additional per month when you don't get Comcast's cable TV service?

20 Mb/s download with annual contract is $60 /month.

They also have a 50 Mb/s - 20 (?) Mb/s plan for ~ $140 per month.

That's cheaper than Comcast, folks.

Thats good to hear. Fios is getting closer and closer to me.

i like the usability, the menus, and the look of the HD, etc.

the cable internet is great, and i've had zero problems.

i used to call comcast like twice a week about a problem. now i have no problems.

installation was a bitch because i'm an old building, but it all worked out fine.

i dig it. love the picture.

Looks like this is true on jersey ave. Just goto verizon.com and enter your home phone or address for FIOS.

I had an old Westell (wired) and Verizon told me they would upgrade me to a wireless Actiontec when I said they can shove their 1.5 Mbps DSL (that they advertise as UP TO 3.0.) They IMPLIED the Actiontec would give me a faster speed...they lied and I KNEW they were lying but I accepted the upgrade grudgingly.
Short version: it blew after 5 months. I asked for a replacement...they didn't recommend it because the Actiontecs were "blowing out left and right."

I plugged in the old Westall...works fine, same speed same reliability. MAybe anecdotal, maybe not.

Newport Update:
All three condos have VERIZON FIOS, none of the 11 rental buidings has FIOS!
I'm pissed off but seems nobody else seems to be.

Thanks! I would have preferred the Westell, and am trying to figure out if the Actiontec will cut it for my needs.

Question for new FIOS users: is the router supplied by Verizon Actiontec or Westell?

Most people don't have a practical need for high upload speeds.

Cable modems are only fast if there aren't a lot of people in your neighborhood using it.

Comcast admitted to me on the phone Fios is faster. I think they got sued.

They like to make it so you can't use your x-box b/c they seem to think it is a torrent... yet you can download bit torrents without an issue. Not me, of course, I am speaking hypothetically.

My husband complains all the time that it is messing with his x-box connection. It happens when I am watching Netfix on my Tivo also occasionally.

I hate you Comcast. Fios please come to my neighborhood. I am willing to pay more. I know the beauty you can bring to my tv viewing and internet usaing.

Ok, but don't be fooled by Comcast's "Speedboost" "feature" which doubles the transfer speed, but only for the first 10MB of the transfer. Then you get halved. Most speed tests don't transfer more than 10MB of data, so your results are going to look twice as good as they are, most of the time.

FiOS is also the clear winner for upload capacity, if you're willing to pay for 20/20. You don't even have the option with Comcast.

Also, cable being a shared medium, I notice a huge variety in the performance of my Comcast connection from hour to hour, day to day. By contrast, our FiOS connection at my office has been rock solid from day one, never failing to deliver the advertised 20/20.

I can't wait to get FiOS at home.

Question for those who have had fios installed: Do they remove the copper drop line from the pole to your house or do you have the option of keeping it?

Yes, I've read the same thing. Alas, when Comcast was given the right by the City to wire it for cable, Lefrak was able to successfully keep them out in SPITE of the law. They are STILL able to exclude Comcast from half of their buildings because there is nobody around who wants to continue litigation. Almost half of the buildings are denied anything except a proprietary nightmare called NEWPORT TELECOM for cable and internet. The BPU back in 2001 (or 2002...don't hold me to it) did NOT have the authority/ability to compel Lefrak to allow Comcast in. Only the court had the power to order it unconditionally after 3 years of litigation.
Various techniques are available to huge landlords to prevent installation such as claims of "improper insurance" claims of "damaging workmanship" claims of "tenant annoyance." And every new claim takes months of litigation.

IF, as you claim, Verizon has come upon new magnificent overarching powers then why are we hearing stories about how Verizon is payiing one co-op or condominium association after another many thousands of dollars to allow wiring? That makes no economic sense to Verizon UNLESS the building has the DE FACTO means to say NO WIRES!

I have gone through this with a recalcitrant immensely rich landlord...I KNOW his power, laws on the books notwithstanding. I KNOW how powerless the BPU is in this situation. Believe me, this is not something I've READ about but something I've experienced blow by blow.

Verizon isn't stupid. Their cable is in the middle of the courtyard surrounded by thousands upon thousands of eager apartments...but there it lays for over a year unconnected except to ONE well paid condominium building.
Our only hope is that if Verizon can buy Lefrak out for some kingly ransom...THEN and only then will there be FIOS for us.

So, I wrote this before but the entire section of the thread was deleted due to Dixon Mills-based derailment. Anyway, it's not available there yet. So as it's making it's way up Wayne Street, it's doing so very sloooooowlllly.

Alas, I fear Lefrak will keep FIOS out of the Newport rental buildings FOREVER even though the cable runs smack into the middle of the complex and has for nearly a year.

As for the BPU, it took 3 years of litigation for the BPU to push the COURT to order Lefrak to get rid of their 100% commitment to RCN/Liberty cable.
The BPU has no real authority to order change...only the right to petition a court and ANOTHER court and ANOTHER court. Been there, done that!

Thus a landlord has a de facto if not a de jure right to keep FIOS out.

I just got mail from Verizon saying that FIOS is now available on Wayne Street downtown. I called for details. The triple play is $95 / month and includes internet at 10/2 speed (10 Mbps download, 2 mbps upload). They can double the speed for $5 / month upgrade.

For the TV, you also have to rent the controller box. $10 / month for an HD box, $16 / month for HD box with a DVR, and $20 / month for HD box with a DVR that can play back on a second TV.

i thought it's rolling out on a block by block basis...so some parts of downtown will have it before others do. the best way to check is to keep going to verizon's site and putting your address in

All I know is I have FIOS now, saved about 50% over Comcast and have about 1,000% better service. I'm definitely in the honeymoon stage, but literally within seconds of everything FIOS being connected I canceled Comcast. They offered me one month of free service to keep me. I told them they could offer me a full year and it wouldn't matter. If it's around, get it!

Comcast's commercials saying "more HD than anyone" are blatant lies. They use their "on demand" to include HD. FIOS has all those channels and more live. CNN... CABLE News Network (note CABLE) for cripes sake is not available on Comcast in HD, but is on FIOS. Bravo, Food, Discovery, Smithsonian, etc etc in LIVE TIME. And the internet speeds.... um... bye Comcast. My upload speeds are now better than any download speeds I ever had. Sorry, I just couldn't wait to get rid of the arrogance that WAS Comcast!
