The thing is they can't actually keep track of the contract b/c mine says i still have like 4 months on it. i have had comcast for 2 years. it should be over.

Oh. I just have internet service through Comcast. I called last fall to get my rate lowered and she said there was no commitment.

I cancelled mine contract with Comcast in December and there was no quit fee. I've been very happy with Fios, amazing tv picture and fast internet in the basic package no complaints so far.

Since when does Comcast have an early disconnect fee?

Things are different now because of a number of regulatory decisions. The FCC has ruled that exclusivity contracts bewteen a landlord and a video provider are illegal. Second, a state law requires Verizon to deploy FIOS. If the landlord resisits, the provider can petition the Board of Public Utilities. The key is getting Verizon to agree to petition the BPU because it will incur some legal costs in doing so. But if they do, they are most likely to be successful since they have the law on their side. Verizon's legal department is large and sophisticated, and if the building is large enough they are likely to do so.

I live downtown and FIOS is still not available in my neighborhood. I don't understand what the hold up is other than the usual Verizon incompetence.

This is nothing new. I think NY state had a similar lawsuit two years ago because Verizon kept "running out" of the LCD tv's they promised new customers.

I'm in Newport and I'm convinced the landlord will NEVER let Verizon FIOS in without a tenant lawsuit. The one building on site that is a condo with a board INDEPENDENT of Lefrak got FIOS in the middle of last year.

We went through the same thing when Lefrak kept Comcast out almost a DECADE after they got the license to wire Jersey City. It took 3 years in court for them to relent and STILL they have kept Comcast out of several of their newer buildings that weren't built at the time of the court decree.

So the Verizon optical wiring has been in the street for a year or more (thus able to go into ONE building) but all the rental tenants are deprived of it illegally by a rapacious landlord eager to suck every penny for his "private" system.

Curious. Are you in a multi-unit building or brownstoner? I know that those in large multi-unit buildings are being converted first downtown. Let us know

They had a verizon guy in my building last monday. They started taking information for appointments. This is on 9th between coles and Jersey. It might be building dependent as well because they have been putting a lot of work in over here.

Yesterday I got a Direct TV/DSL bundle offer from Verizon in the mail. Another sign that FIOS won't be here anytime soon

In the old days of analog cable you used to be able to tip these guys and get free HBO and other channels. But now that everything is digital that probably doesn't work anymore.

Absolutely not. I had a cable guy ask me for a tip once after he turned up late and I gave him the old adage "don't eat yellow snow".

These guys get paid well and do not need tips at all

I, too, was surprised about the prices. When Fios first started being rolled out in NJ about 2 years ago I remember the prices being significantly lower. I recall internet service being around $35/mo, but now I see that it is closer to $47/mo. I guess the cost of rolling out the service is really catching up with Verizon. I'll be sticking with Directv at least for now.

NNJR is correct. The problem with copper is degradation over distance. DSL is only available if you are a particular distance from the central office (CO). Verizon, as well as other DSL providers, will put substations they can run higher quality cables into and then service from.

All the various switches and interconnections result in dreadfully slow data. CAT5, the standard for intra-building cabling and the type used in your typical ethernet (network) cable has been pushed to some serious speeds. But, it can only be done over relatively short distances in controlled environments, i.e. not in the freezing cold.

Basically, you'll get fibre to your house or a very close substation and then copper the rest of the way.

This is how FIOS is wired. The fiber goes to the house only, not to individual rooms.

You will get the full benefit of FIOS by utilizing your existing coax unless it is extremely old and not able to carry a proper signal.
