Once again, the Soup Swap was a smashing success! There were 24 kinds of soup available, a gracious hostess (Celeste from Made with Love) and the fearless organizer Monica. Several bags of canned goods were collected to be donated. I can not wait for next year!

CatDog - sounds like you got to keep your great soup all to yourself? Hope we'll see you at Soup Swap next year!

I finally dug into one of my Soup Swap soups for dinner. We had the "That's Some Good Soup!" and, yes, it was some great soup! It was potatoes and corn and maybe a little bacon - just perfect, especially piping hot on a cold night.

Looking forward to trying the rest of the soups!

Thanks everyone! We had a great turnout yesterday, 14 soups to choose from and 2 big boxes of donations to the food pantry. Please check out the photo in today's Jersey Journal!

A few people mentioned hearing about it on JCList, so I'm especially thankful to all the Listers out there!

And for those of you who didn't make it this year I hope you all come out next year!

The good news is that the Jets game next Sunday doesn't start until 6:30pm (according to ESPN). So, you can come to Soup Swap and even have time to pre-game before the big game!

Still not sure if we should bring 8 quarts of the same soup or 4 quarts of two different soups, I guess it will depend on how much time I have this week to make a second soup.

I think it's better to have more variety (i.e. 4 quarts each of 2 different soups), but either way, I'll look forward to seeing you at the Soup Swap!

As for labels & ingredients, you can print up a card to go with the soup or write it on a label if you'd like. I always bring extra labels in case people forget to label their soups before the swap, but I will say that it's easier to get the labels to stick to the plastic containers before they're frozen.

See you Sunday!

I love the idea of recipe cards/ingredient lists, so when I finish someone's delicious soup, I can have some idea of how to recreate it without waiting a year until the next swap and crossing my fingers it will be there. I'll be sure to include the recipe with my soup!

Well I'm not sure if others are doing this but I'm typing up an ingredients list and recipe cards, so people know what they are getting. Esp since my 16-bean soup has smoked ham in it and some people don't eat pork. Bf & I are looking forward to this Sunday. Still not sure if we should bring 8 quarts of the same soup or 4 quarts of two different soups, I guess it will depend on how much time I have this week to make a second soup.

As far as knowing where the soups came from and what is in them, in the "telling of the soup" we each introduce ourselves, and tell a little bit about our soup including what is is in it.

This can help you avoid choosing a soup that may contain ingredients you are allergic to, don't eat, or simply don't like. But, yes, there is an element of trusting your neighbors involved.

Just a thought or really a concern. This "grab bag" swapping of the soups how will we know where it came from and what could be in there ?? Isn't it a bit dangerous to eat something from strangers. Maybe that is why they don't have bake sales anymore.

Just a reminder, one week until Soup Swap. Rainy day, now is a great time to get cooking.

I've gotten some good responses, I expect we'll have a nice turnout next Sunday.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or let me know what you're cooking up!

What about Grace Van Vorst Church on Erie Street? They might be game since it's a food donation drive.
If you want to do it at a bar, try Bar Majestic, LITM or Zeppelin Hall. If it is an afternoon gathering the bars will be pretty empty anyway.

Hi,

Sounds like a great time.

If you need any live music for the event, I'd be gald to volunteer. I do an acoustic/electric indie rock duo with my husband Joe. You can check us out at http://www.myspace.com/boomslang. We do originals, classic rock, alternative rock, 50s rock and a little classic soul.

If you're interested, call me at 201-232-6211 or e-mail me at littlerbear@hotmail.com.

Have a great day,
Karen

The "official" national Soup Swap date is Saturday, January 23, 2010. We've always had the J.C. Soup Swap on a Sunday in the past. We could break from tradition and do it on a Saturday, we could do Sunday the 24th, or we could try something completely different... I'm open to suggestions.

As for locations, far the past 3 years we've always had it at Barrow Mansion. I've been paying to rent the room there, but if we could find somewhere that would let us have a little space for free, I'd donate that money to the food pantry too. It takes about a half-hour to an hour total, we don't take up a lot of space, and if we had it at a restaurant, bar, coffee shop or something, maybe we'd all order drinks or food.
Talk it out, let's hear your great ideas...

Try the Vietnam Veterans Memorial building up in the Heights section in Pershing Field Park.
Call the Mayor's Office (201) 547-4900 or the J.C. city operator (201) 547-5000 to have something arranged.

It's plenty cold out, I think it's time to start talking about Soup Swap 2010.

The "official" national Soup Swap date is Saturday, January 23, 2010. We've always had the J.C. Soup Swap on a Sunday in the past. We could break from tradition and do it on a Saturday, we could do Sunday the 24th, or we could try something completely different... I'm open to suggestions.

I only want to do it if people are interested and we'll get a decent turnout.

So, speak up if you're interested, let me know what day works for you.

As for locations, far the past 3 years we've always had it at Barrow Mansion. I've been paying to rent the room there, but if we could find somewhere that would let us have a little space for free, I'd donate that money to the food pantry too.
