Chem spill evacuation on Central
Friday, November 17, 2006
By ALI WINSTON
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A chemical spill at a former dry cleaners on Central Avenue prompted the Jersey City Fire Department to evacuate area residents Wednesday evening.

Last night, a cleanup was still in progress involving a hazardous materials crew from North Regional Fire and Rescue, and the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Hudson Regional Health Commission were monitoring the situation, officials said.

The Jersey City Fire Department responded to a report of a hazardous materials spill just after 5 p.m. at a building on Central Avenue between Zabriskie and Hutton streets that formerly housed a dry cleaners on the first floor, Fire Department spokesman Andrew Johnson said.

About a dozen residents were evacuated from seven surrounding buildings, including two people who were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center after experiencing difficulty breathing, Johnson said. Their conditions couldn't be determined last night.

The chemical is believed to be perchloroethylene, the main solvent used in dry cleaning as well as in some aerosols, paints, and coatings. Lengthy contact with the material can lead to skin rashes, poor muscle control, respiratory difficulty and even loss of consciousness after extended exposure, officials said.

The cleanup continued yesterday, said Karen Hershey, a DEP spokeswoman, who added she didn't know when the operations would be completed.
