Such a long article, so little of it having to actually do with Jersey City. Rather, it snarkily reads as JC=cypher for every other gentrification story written about a neighborhood in NY Mag over the last 15 years.
it's not that i disagree with most of his conclusions. and i make no claim of neutral objectivity, so it's hard to imagine what this reads like to the average NY Mag reader who knows little-to-nothing about our fair berg. but from where i sit, it comes across as a big 'so what.' thanks for trying, though, mr. sternbergh.

That's a fair point, but I guess it exceeded my expectations so I was happy - I was expecting a condescending piece with preconceived ideas about how Jersey City is cheesy compared to New York, and instead I thought we got a fairly accurate picture of dojo. I mean let's be honest, Jersey City is a good place and it's worthy of comparison to NYC neighborhoods, but at the same time it's not exactly the new nexus of cutting edge art and culture, unless I'm really missing something.
I didn't take it to be particularly snarky, in fact I thought the part about how fast gentrification in NYC moves now was very well thought out and honest. I do wish they could have gotten better photos - there IS something snarky about that shot of Oasis.

Overall, I thought it was a decent article, and better written than some pieces about JC in the past.
I am disappointed that there was no mention of the growing infrastructure problems that are already being caused by the over building/over development of this luxury condo boom. People considering moving here need to know that the city has made no efforts to accommodate them (and us) in terms of the train stations, roads, and parking among other things. There was also no discussion about how residents may feel about the displacement of minorities, lower and lower middle class/moderate income residents. I've lived here 11 years and personally, I see this place becoming less diverse. That bothers me.

I ditto all the above. What a rosy picture has been painted, and anyone who lives here and is the least bit honest will tell you it ain't no bed of roses.) (And let's get something straight: the "artists" arrived fifteen years after the brownstoners. Credit where credit is due. The brownstoners rescued the downtown from eminent domain seizure and blighting; then came all the art students in search of cheap rent. Either keep the history true or keep quiet.)

So should I assume that you moved here 5 years ago as an art student?
JK! I thinjk OneSkirt has some good points -- however I think it mostly applies just to downtown -- Journal Square and most of the rest of Jersey City seems to developing more slowly and just look at the vitality of the lttle Inda area. As for PATH service I am sure they will have to run more train cars, and it would also be great if we could get more of the commuter busses to go to Journal Square and not straight to Grove, Exchange or Pavonia. And ya know - I don't care about these rich trendy wannabe people's obsession with moving into less than perfect neighborhoods, and taking over - the "stress" these people feel in not living in the most cutting edge places (or the syndrom, or however he described it). Boo frickin' hooo.
What about the displacement of people and groups who have lived here for a long time (if not their whole lvies)? What about the stress it causes them to be squeezed out? What about the city's failings in providing affordable housing alongside the luxury developments? What about the corruption of city hall, bowing to developers? These issues were ignored entirely. Look, I know there are pros and cons to gentrification. Yes, I like some of the gentrification for reasons I stated earlier. But I sensed a tone from this author that these rich people and hipster wannabees are entitled to take over and run people out. That ticks me off.

With what is going on with you at Dixon Mills -- I totally understand being fed up with New York as a whole. I still think it was a good article - it at least places Jersey City in that context -- and yeah everyone in the whole NYC area feels the strain of all the changes -- it's in all the boros.

Unfortuantely, more trains won't solve the problem. A larger station with multiple platforms will. But when is that coming? Remember how you could not physically get in or out of Grove St. station in that year and a half post 9/11 when Exchange Place was closed? There were literally too many bodies and there were PA police running crowd control? Well, I see that happening again, only much worse.

ECH,
The artists were here in the 80s, buying houses on Jersey Ave for $10,000. They sold their places to the "brownstoners" for 40x what they paid. Now they are in Harrison, Newark, Philly, even Easton. These new "artists" are not exactly what I'd call artists. There's no decent loft space to be had in JC anymore.
