Its Elmar Auto Repair and he isn't in Jersey City he is located in
Elmar Auto Repair
15 Anderson Ave, Fairview NJ

owners name us Elmar they always charge me the best prices. 2012 Subaru Forester 2.5XT Touring
- both front axels
- all 4 brakes, disks cross drilled & pads
- front left head light rewired the socket clip fell off for the main light bulb
- Front left suspension mount

All for 1600$

They fixed my neighbors 2014 Audi Q5 for a couple hundred dollars when the dealership quoted 2K for the fix.

His garage is only 21 minutes away from Coles & Hamilton Park in Jersey City. So it's not far at all. Especially if you want to save money for a great mechanic.

Dealership told me a minimum 2500$ if it took them longer than a certain amount of time then 3300$. Elmar had it done in about 3 hours I went home and came back because his shop is so small there is no waiting area but there are restaurants near by and a Burger King etc if you don't want like BBQ rib, or hispanic food.

G&T on Communipaw specialize on Germans for mechanical repairs. Had them do a minor aftermarket tune. Some examples on pricing: Oil changes are $100 for full synthetic on Audis($200 dealer). DSG oil change $500 vs $900+ at dealer. Last week inquired about replacing full suspension ; $1000 for all labor + better than OEM control arms , ball joints included . cost of struts extra.

If you need wheel alignment then Firestone on Rt 139 has a good $200 lifetime package if you plan to keep the car for few years. Already had 5-6 visits and paid for itself after 2 visits.

Any indie mechanic recommendation for Landrovers/Rangerovers? The dealer at Manhattan aint that good and the one good is too far away for some simple jobs..

Funny, the zillion times I've driven that block I'm always looking right, at all the fascinating electrical crap. If they're all you say they are, I'll be a happy camper, they're so damn close! Brakes need attention, guess that's not a bad 1st thing to do with them. Damn dealership should have given me a heads up about the pads, it's only been 3-4k miles since they last ripped me off for the "scheduled maintenance".

Joe's is gone. I used him for years, he was honest, but I felt he had a hand in the demise of my aged vehicle due to poor maintenance. I think he was not proactive enough about checking brake pads, spark plugs etc for fear of being seen as working you over. My Kia is now 4 years old and I'm tired of shlepping it to the dealer on 440.

Well Greg, at least you're consistent about not knowing anything about anything. Consumer Reports has Kia #9 of 30 for Best Brand, ahead of Honda, Volvo, Mercedes, Acura and Infinity, among others. My under $17k Soul was a stupendous value.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned them in this thread (I'm not reading the whole thing), but A&R on 5th Street right by Healy's is awesome. I've dealt with Alberto in detail when having my Audi repaired; two other shops quoted be over $1,000 for a new airbag sensor, when the real problem was only taking apart the seat and reconnecting everything again. Alberto didn't even charge me for anything. Can't say enough good things about A&R, a totally honest place in an industry with many shady characters.

Cleanest Auto body shop I've ever seen. If you have Geico insurance, there is an office attached to his building.
Not cheap, but great work. Make sure you say hello to Ziggy.
I believe he's a Hungarian/Romanian immigrant and he's a pissa to talk to.

Another vote for Ziggy's. Their work, while not cheap, is top notch. Highly recommended!

Wondering if people can recommend an auto-body shop in downtown area (or close to). Rear of leased car scraped up (mostly paint scrapes and a broken tail light). Was hoping to find a place close to home so I wouldn't have to travel by taxi somewhere.

I usually do everything on my cars myself but I was stumped with a certain problem. I would never go to a rip-off auto dealer for service. So I decided to stay JC local. I found the AAMCO up on JFK and Danforth. I never realized it but they don?t do just transmissions anymore they do all kinds of auto repair. They have a parking lot on the side of their business. They are really friendly and helpful. The place is clean. A pleasant surprise in my good old Jersey City.

www.aamcojerseycity.com

Jersey City, NJ

.
PS ? Yes I am ?that guy? who works on my cars on city streets. I never had a problem with the city inspectors until I tried changing out an engine in the 80?s. (I think I was ratted on by a newcomer yuppie) I toned it down after that encounter. Now I mostly just stick to changing my oil and brake pads.

I have had a very good experience with this body shop:

A & L Auto Body Inc
390 5th St, Jersey City, NJ 07302
(201) 792-4606

And yes Summit Auto Repair is fantastic.

This is an auto repair and also an autobody shop. They do excellent work and use either OEM parts or quality after market parts. Prices are set and shown on the computer prior to making a commitment to do the work.
They are in the Heights across from The Reservoir.

Summit Auto in Pavonia Ave. Those guys (Rich, Tom and his brother) are BMW enthusiasts, they all drive one and took good care of my 528 for many years.

I can't speak directly to suspension work, but I will +1 the general recommendation for Ricky at Chariot. He went so far as to put my car back on the lift to show me the work he'd done. No dealer / large shop will do that for you any longer.

No idea if he does body work.

FYI his number is (201) 824-3352

Good luck.

Can anyone offer a suggestion to a mechanic that's done work on their suspension? I think I need a new front left wheel bearing on my Mazda, but want to get it properly diagnosed.

I saw someone suggest A M Auto Body earlier in the thread, but when I drove by 6th St. yesterday it looked very closed.

Also going to need a place that can paint a panel for me once Spring comes around, if anyone has a suggestion there it would be appreciated.

Head over to Chariot Auto on Coles between 4th and 5th street. The owner and mechanics name is Ricky. He offers great service and I like using him because he is in the neighborhood. If i have to leave my car for a long period i can just walk home.

Was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a local auto body place that's honest and reasonably priced.

I scraped the side of my car against a wall resulting in a dent and scraped paint on my door. Would probably just need some touch up paint and the dent pulled out.

Anyone know of a place where I can get this done without getting gouged? Or have a guess about how much this work will set me back?
