What teachers are "out of town" in the middle of APRIL? Spring break?

Yup.

I find something squeamish about workers having a definitive vote for their choice of supervisors. Most people wouldn't vote for a boss that would make them work harder. But they can have this power only due to the apathy of the rest of us.

What harm would it do to have this election on the regular balloting in Nov, other than to shake the comfortable out of their trees? Despite the competition from the other races, it can hardly get less attention!

NOT FINAL, YET
Hoboken school board, budget, still undecided
Thursday, April 20, 2006
By KEN THORBOURNE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
Absentee ballots proved the difference for a Jersey City school board candidate in Tuesday's election.

And still-uncounted votes recorded on a cartridge from an electronic voting machine - currently under lock and key in a Jersey City warehouse - are likely to determine if a proposed $32.2 million tax levy passes in Hoboken.

These votes could also change the outcome for the board candidates as well.

In Jersey City, former school board member Edward Cheatam pulled ahead of first-time candidate Michael Esposito yesterday when 217 absentee ballots were added to his machine ballot totals. Esposito received only 87 absentee ballots.

When the polls closed Tuesday night Esposito, former chairman of the city's Rent Leveling Board, was ahead.

But with all the votes counted, Cheatam had 1,040 to Esposito's 999.

"It feels very good," Cheatam said. "Absentee ballots are a big part of every school board election, especially for teachers who might be out of town."

Cheatam, Hudson County's affirmative action officer, was endorsed by the teachers' union. School board chairman William DeRosa and former mayor Anthony Cucci were also re-elected.

With absentee votes counted in Hoboken, a school tax levy question was ahead 1,085 to 1,074 votes, according to Hudson County Clerk Javier Incl?n. But that 11-vote difference could be washed away once a cartridge mistakenly left in a voting machine is recovered.

The missing cartridge is from a district with 765 registered voters, Incl?n said. Those votes may also decide which three candidates gain seats on the nine-member board.

With 35 of 36 precincts counted yesterday, newcomers Theresa Minutillo and Anthony Louis Romano Jr., and incumbent Frank Raia, led with 1,629, 1,619, and 1,614 votes, respectively.

Fourth-place finisher Wanda Santana-Alicea, an incumbent, has 1,507 votes.

Incl?n said he plans to seek a court order today to open the machine and have the votes counted by tomorrow.

For other election results, check online at www.hudsoncountyclerk.org.

39 absentee ballots were all that made the difference for the incumbents.40 people on this board could have done it.this is why City Hall thinks it can do whatever it wants.
The real question that needs to get answered is what happened to the 600 absentee ballots not counted. The paper said that 950 people requested ballots but only 380 voted?
Something stinks, many people in the housing sites never got their ballots in the mail, then were denied the right to vote on election day.

Chalk up 3 more for the old boys.

The lack of info on both the incumbents and challengers was appalling. I don't know whether these guys are the ones who got us into the mess or are have been trying to get us out but dealing with systemic inertia. There's simply no data for the civilians voting, which leads me to assume (perhaps unfairly) it's the former.

I agree with Alb that any system that isn't trying to clone Learning Community isn't doing it's job. The charters were supposed to be experiments from which the system could model the successful. But both the successes and failures seem to be out of the system's view.

Hindsight is 20-20.

Had I thought about it, I would have done a write-in vote for "Wanda" and perhaps also one for the guy from the Liquor Store.

I voted at 8PM at Academic HS - Hamilton Park and was number 29. This is a pathetic turnout!

I voted at P.S. 9 (next to Ferris HS), around 7:00 pm. I was voter number 30.

As can be seen from the vote totals, a few well organized civic groups, working together, could swing an election.

These votes will soon become more important. As we discussed last night at VVPA with Brian O'Reilly (business administrator for the city), the School Districts will eventually go back from state control to local control. The school board will then have actual authority, and not just an advisory role to Superintendent Epps.

Under local control, the voters also vote to approve the school budget. That will (hopefully) increase voter turnout.

Ivoted at 6:20PM, no one there, and ladies at my table said only 19 all day at their table! I hope more voted at other table, or were headed there after work, as with all the complaints we hear, read and see posted on this board you'd think some would vote considering how much of the budget is wasted on poor control of operational budgets, construction, etc.

Then again, if you're sending your children to private schools I guess there's not much incentive to vote, except the waste of monies on cronyism should be enough reason to vote IMHO.

Bump, Bump, Bump!

All the other topic threads on this subject are "political trolls" touting their choice, so since this thread covers all the candidates, read here for more info on whatever your choice, but VOTE!

It sounds as if Hemingway is an obvious pick.

What about:

- Heather Martin: I guess she builds schools for a living. Is she someone who's a part of the machine or someone outside who understands how the machine works and would stop the crooks?

- Cheatham: Some people in this thread have already praised the guy. Any more reactions?

- Jenny Campbell: Would she, basically, be a good voice for the the sorts of parents who are desperate to get their kids into Learning Community?

It's a little disgusting that the J Journal didn't even mention the election today (polls are open 2 to 9 pm). Yeah, Morgan rightly knocked Dr. E., but what about a line at least mentioning the election! In case anyone cares, I'll be clicking on DeRosa, Hemingway, and Richardson.

Please vote for Mahdi Hemingway on 12a, this guy is the real deal.Young enough to relate to the same kids roaming our streets and smart and tough enough to set them straight. We vote in a young man from the projects and city hall will have a fit. OK, Mahdi runs an after school program for kids in trouble and would like all schools open till six pm.
Runs a basketball tournimant yearly between dif. housing sites to relive tention.
Aide to councilmen Steve Fulop.
Endorced by local DFA...Democracy for america.
Endorced by parent group seeking televised board meetings.
backed by late mayor Glen Cunninghams wife sandy.
This is an astounding young man who can make a difference if given a chance.

Please, please, go out and vote on Tuesday. Thanks Bright Moments for the Mia Scalanga email and, I received Steven Fulops email as well. It really helps.

Many new parents have arrived in Jersey City and I hope they go out and vote. My son is only 2 years old but Pre-K is just around the corner.

I met Heather Martin and Edward Cheatham at an event last week. I was quite impressed with Edward Cheatham. He had many points and goals that I seemed to agree with as a new mom.

I did not get a chance to talk to Heather Martin though I was impressed that a new JC resident is amongst the candidates.

I also did not get a chance to speak with Anthony Cucci though he was at the event. I always enjoy him.

My vote will probably be something like this, 1 person that brings fresh ideas to the group, 1 person with JC experience, and then the wild card.

I thought i would bring this other post back up so as to keep them both current till tuesdays election.
Councilmen Fulop has picked three candidates he feels comfortable with and i agree with at least one and that is Mahdi Hemingway.
Mahdi works with the kids in the housing sites every day with an after school program that needs to be expanded.
Crime and education go hand in hand and he is the one person running that can bridge that gap.Can any other candidate walk in to the Booker Tee housing site and talk to the kids.Mahdi and vernon would just shake this old time hack board up.
Lastly in a city of 240,000 voters only 5000 people vote in a school board. An average of 800 vote downtown, bring that to 1800 and watch city hall pay attention.take a shot, vote tues. and every issue we have downtown will then be backed by a real voting block.
We have got to pay attention to our kids now or deal with the consequences later.

Voting in this election is essential, and there are issues that affect every person, whether they have children in the school system or not.

- We can improve our after school programs significantly, which will have an impact on some of the crime activity cited on this site.

- We could use an open dialog as it relates to the 4 corner park in Paulus Hook which tax payers own but the school board has put trailers on. We just need to start the dialog, not rush anything, but be fair to all sides.

- We need to get past the rubber stamp mentality in Jersey City

- The current board pushed back on televising the meetings., Why not? What is there to hide? The City Council televises the council caucus.

When you look at what we have got so far, it is the same union endorsed candidates that are agreed upon by/with the Healy administration with little opposition. That is not right.

I picked three candidates that are sympathetic to the issues mentioned above and that will keep the board on its toes moving forward.

Finally, I pointed out in my e-mail that people should read in the Hudson Reporter about the candidates I chose in my e-mail. The reporter clearly states that Mahdi Hemmingway volunteers in my office - and i am proud of this. I am thankful that I have good people working with me, and this only lends itself to the fact that I am 100% confident in Mahdi's ability. He is young, motivated, capable, cares about the city, and can relate to the kids in many of our schools. I wouldn't vouch for him if i didn't believe in him.

I hope that is helpful and most importantly please make time on Tuesday to vote

Steve

Steve,

I appreciate you providing information on the school board candidates. I have never voted in a school board election simply due to a lack of knowledge about the candidates.

I see that you are advocating your three choices: Mahdi Hemmingway, Edward Allen, and Mike Esposito. I looked at the Hudson Reporter (online here and here) and hoped to see a decent profile on each of these candidates and what they want to do on the board. What I found instead, was, a brief description of each of the candidate's history and one or two talking points from the candidates. There wasn't even a statement from Edward Allen, though he was listed as a candidate.

Do you have any additional information on these three candidates that will help us identify what they want to do on the board beyond restoring the 4th corner to the Grand/Washington Park? What are they planning to do to improve the quality of education in Jersey City? How will they encourage young families to stay in jersey City and keep their children in the city's school programs, rather than moving to the 'burbs for a better education.

IMO - The migration of young families out of Jersey City due to the failing quality of education is the biggest issue facing the city right now - bigger than anything else we all gripe about on this site.

Steve, education is the big issue in JC. Every parent I speak with always says, "Well, I guess we'll move out of town once our children are ready for school." Doesn't that just kill you to hear that? We can fight crime with better policing, so can't we fight poor education with better educators and giving them better tools for teaching? How can we accomplish this?

Thanks once again for all you do for Ward E and your easy accesibility.

Of course, I always find myself responding to DanL.

Steve
