Minnie - This was my first time at one of these meetings. I didn't feel that anything productive happened at the meeting at all. Just a bunch of statistics and back and forth about whether or not crime was getting worse. And going over a list of previous crimes that happened in the last few months. I would have liked to have heard discussion about what can be done (or is being done) to improve things, or how we as residents can help.

The strangest thing though was that there were 4 Guardian Angles present and never once did the meeting leaders introduce them or give them the floor to speak. It was like the elephant in the room that no one talked about. I don't get it. Some of these guys came all the way from Manhattan to help too.

My understanding is that the GAs are meeting tomorrow in force at the Dixon Deli to discuss where they will patrol and how, logistics, etc. I think it's open to the community, but they realize that the daytime is hard for most people to make. I have told Mike that they should consider having an open meeting to talk to the communicty one evening here soon, to explain what they are about, how to reach them and to field questions. Hopefully that will happen.

So what happened tonight? What did the Angels have to say?

Is 1pm on a weekday (forgetting the snow and all) a good time to meet? Seems like after work or on the weekend would make more sense -- lke this Sunday at 1pm. (I know it was moved but I hope there is enough of a turn out for them.

Guardian Angels coming tomorrow
The Guardian Angels meeting with Downtown Jersey City residents and business owners has been moved to tomorrow at 1 p.m., organizers said. The group, including founder Curtis Sliwa, will be at the Dixon Deli at Varick Street and Christopher Columbus Drive.

The Guardian Angels will begin patrols of the Downtown area immediately after the meeting.

Just curious...to whom exactly are your comments directed? It's hard to tell.

Usually the most vocal opponents to their presence are the local police departments. I don't knock the police officers and I kind of feel like a lot of people here are very quick to jump on their case, but I do feel that they're only as effective as their management- like any organization- and the management here is terrible. The GA coming here, coupled with Fulop's very public calls for change in the department's management structure, should get things moving along for the better, and hopefully throughout the whole of Jersey City and not just Downtown.

I was just downstairs talking to Mirna at the Deli ( I live across the street). She is doing well, and her bruises are almost gone. She is extremely grateful for all the visits and calls.

Even more intersting - I talked on the phone with Mike while at the Deli. Mike is a Guardian Angel and another neighbor of mine whom I have yet to meet. He is the one who is organizing the GAs to help out here. We talked a bit and I told him about JC list and the interest & concern people on here have about crime. He plans to get on here with us soon to help with information and questions.

Mike is also planning to be at the Crime Watch meeting tomorrow night to meet more neighbors and talk about the GAs plans. He encourages AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE to attend tomorrow night.

Also, they will be rescheduling the meeting at the deli, probably for Tuesday. The guy from the GAs was stuck in Miami due to snow and that is why today's meeting got postponed. Mike has promised to call me and post here when he has more info. on the rescheduling of the meeting.

I just called over to the deli and they said it's cancelled or postponed (not clear which, no reschedule date yet).

I guess the best thing, if you're interested, is to check out the Downtown Watch Mtg tomorrow instead.

Not me, I'm makin' and eatin chili today! Haven't heard an update and too much snow to get there for me.

There will be a GA rep tomorrow as well as Steve Fulop and most likely PO Reilly or Captain McDonough at Downtown Watch Mtg tomorrow night at 7PM, Grace Van Vorst Church: enter from 2nd street red doors into gym.

We took a little walk to the park today. The main streets are plowed, and it's not that cold out. I was planning on stopping by the Varick bodega for the GA thing, but after all the shovelling we did this morning, I think I'll take it easy the rest of the day. I hope they reschedule the event.

Call me oversensitive, but the remark, "It's a little difficult to call the police on crime in your area when the criminals are from your family and are your nieghbors - " sounded mre than a little off base.

In any event, it's a little simplistic to say that there's more focus on cracking down on crime in downtown because other neighborhoods don't complain. Besides, even if that were the case which I don't believe it is, does that justify such action? I'm guessing another reason for the increased focus on downtown is as a result of Fulop. The 12 block from groove street area would be just as well off with no representation rather than Lipshitz.

Anyone know if the GA meeting is still on for today?

yes - you're oversensitive. i used to live in a crime ridden area of brooklyn back in the mid eighties. we put up with much more than i do now because if we called the cops, it would be possible that the dealers nearby would single us out as the guys who called. family members may not call cops cause their own family or friends might be peripherally singled out. it's basic fear of retribuition.

i didnt mean to insult you but i think you read more into it than was intended. i think MANY of you read more into the rabbit than intended, looking for a fight.

wasn't meant to insult anyone , but if you want to pick a fight, bring it on

Yeah Ace, like peeing and/or 'making doodie'.

Are you really this much of a brain surgeon, or is it how you try to get folks to somehow engage and interact with you socially?

You have to be one bored, lonely dude.

89% of your questions would be answered if you engaged your brain inwardly [e.g. thought, thinking, thought, thinking, rinse, repeat] instead of picking apart the minute details of other folks thoughts in some preschool attempt at being clever or irreverent.

I remember lots of people like you rabby, only thing is...

I remember making fun of them. Their [and your] entire mindset takes about 2.3 seconds to fully understand and from that point forward it's like a lunch @ Denny's...

Reheated, Rehashed and extremely Tired.

Chill out dude - get a FREAKING SENSE OF HUMOUR FOR ALLAH'S SAKE.

100% of your rant can be answered by not being a jackass. He's making a joke due to the fact that when, at least a gay man, hears "bathroom action", they think of it sexually because it's just something that's jokingly (or not so jokingly for some people) said in some circles.

I got the reference and I'm sure plenty of other people did too. Stop looking for ways to pick a fight.

Thanks Bright Moments for the info!

I've been out of JC for a month and came back to so much action! Well, a GA representative confirmed that he will be at the Neighborhood Watch Meeting on Monday, 7pm, at Grace Church. Enter on Erie Street.. Councilman Fulop also confirmed that he will be attending.

At any rate, all this dialogue is very helpful. I hope more people will come and help out the community. I think if the GA can help us set up a weekly patrol that would help us out. Though, I'm very certain that many people do not want to be identified as a patrol group which is fine with us. A neighborly presence is still a presence.

Please come on Monday!

Can you find some other way to be "amusing" rather than insulting people? No answer required.

McG - i wasn't trying to be amusing here. just stating the case. why is the gentrified area getting attention? cause the people that live there NOW don't want to be live in a crime ridden area. other areas that are crime ridden also have law abiding citizens but they may fear calling the cops for a variety of reasons. all i was saying was squeaky wheel gets the grease.

so who was i insulting?

All valid questions. Here's some basic info:

ALLIANCE OF GUARDIAN ANGELS INC

Who We Are

TO PROMOTE COMMUNITY BETTERMENT BY MEANS OF SUBWAY, STREET AND PARK PATROLS, AND ELDERLY CITIZEN SECURITY ESCORT SERVICE.

This organization is a 501(c)(3) Public Charity. This organization is required to file an IRS Form 990 or 990-EZ. Contributions are deductible, as provided by law.

NTEE Code
S20-Community,Neighborhood Development, Improvement

Mission

TO PROMOTE COMMUNITY BETTERMENT BY MEANS OF SUBWAY, STREET AND PARK PATROLS, AND ELDERLY CITIZEN SECURITY ESCORT SERVICE.

Programs
TRAINING FOR CLASSROOM SAFETY INSTRUCTION AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS.-$54,495

*TO PROVIDE COMMUNITY SAFETY THROUGH STREET PATROL ACTIVITIES AND SENIOR CITIZEN SAFETY ESCORT SERVICES. -$455,334

*TO PROMOTE INTERNET SAFETY AND SECURITY. -$24,681

*DEVELOPMENT OF AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN INNER CITY AREAS AS WELL AS EDUCATIONAL AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS. THIS INCLUDES TEACHING OF LIFE SKILLS AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION.-$189,808

They raised some $1,094,620 in 2003, the last year tax report filed. They spent most of this, 724,318 on their programs. This is over 66% spent on programs with only $232,100 spent on management, fundraising expenses. This is better than most of the so-called charity groups out there.

Their "Chapter Expenses" (nationwide) was $317, 954(NOTE: "Chapter Expenses" are part of the $724,318 program expenses, NOT part of management, fundraising expenses). They only spent $44, 306 with associated Street Patrol expenses, though doubtless their "Chapter Expenses' probably reflect some of the actual street monitoring.

Compensation for Officers, Directors and Trustees is: -$0- Yep that's right, 0 dineros is paid out to Curtis and others on the board. The highest compensation paid out to anyone was to an Educational Consultant they hired, John Munro, $50,400

Also, they paid out in grants to other groups some $189,808 that included the NYC Div of Youth Community Srvcs. and Housing and Urban Development.

And, over the last 5 years over 99.652% of their monies came from the general public.

With a Golf Event, Gala, the Curtis Sliwa show and other fundraisers, they brought in a net of $468,969.Other revenue came from "Safety Education" programs or "Speaking Engagements" for over $65,000.

See this link for more info Form 990 2004, filed in May 2005:

Form 990 Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax

I would say the Guardian Angels are admirable in all that they do, not so much the street patrols, but in particularly persuading communities that the Guardian Angels are not the answer but that we as neighborhoods must all step up to the plate.

We must get involved in our schools, neighborhood groups, monitoring city government, with the State and with and other civic responsibilities that come with the turf whether you rent or own if you're not just a flippin' speculator this is our town.

Just like Spencer Tracy in "Bad Day at Black Rock" to get rid of the corruption that won't deal with the crime.

We cannot do the job of our police force, but we can assist in even small ways by being more alert and proactive in our neighborhoods which starts with getting more involved than surfin' on JCList, whinin', bitchin' and otherwise not being part of the solution.

I will be there!

Agree with you both. But don't stop there why don't both of you show up at this Monday'sDowntown & Van Vorst Neighborhood Watch Monthly Mtg-Mon, Feb 13 @ 7PM, and everyone else who has an interest in stopping crime.

Captain McDonough, Commander of the East District, PO Reilly (our community officer who replaced Officer Mack) and sometimes Steve Fulop (call his office to "suggest" he come) show up, your downtown neighbors and even if you don't live downtown your presence will be welcome to discuss issues with those there who share your concerns.

Let's not make our "support", whether for the well-intentioned Guardian Angels, our police or others trying to help be a "weekend-warrior" only event.

And, for those who believe crime info should be posted here at JCList that comes from this watch group, or others, (full disclosure, no secrecy, etc)why don't you come and voice those concerns to the "principles" in charge instead of just complaining here.

See ya Monday!

All right, you convinced me! You will see me monday.

Better services and attention don't simply come to gentrified areas. They come because the people in those areas demand it. If people in the ungentrified areas want these services, they need only do the same.

Yes, I know, there are a number of reasons why they don't. Some good, some bad. But the fact remains...

It'll be interesting to see what the JCPD's reaction, especially Troy & Healy, to all this will be - that it was under their watch that things got so bad that the Guardian Angels crossed the Hudson. BTW, how does the GA support itself? Is it a not-for-profit dependent on donations/fund-raising? What is the trade-off? What does JC give up when they arrive? I doubt they're coming over for their health...

I would beg to differ that the folks in ungentrified areas haven't been demanding these services - rather, we all know political action often results from strong voices backed by financial clout - something the "ungentrified" may not have available...

I was in Helen's Pizza today and saw a letter left by the Guardian Angels. It was asking people to come and support them on Sunday at the 4:00 pm meeting at the Dixon Deli. If you want them to stay, you have to show them support. Let's go to the meeting and see what is being discussed. I think it's important.
