Now that Jersey City has agreed with two federal agencies to replace, repair and upgrade its sewer and drinking water systems, next comes the hard part.

It’s not just the 10 years of construction on busy Downtown streets that people are sweating. It’s paying the bill that may keep residents and local leaders up at night.

The price tag to reshape the aging systems — some city sewer lines may still be wooden — is more than $1 billion, city and federal officials said Thursday.

Jersey City agrees to $1 billion plan to improve drinking water, combined sewer system

WASHINGTON — Jersey City will spend more than $1 billion to upgrade the city’s drinking water system and improve its municipal combined sewer system under an agreement with the Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), federal officials announced Thursday.

The agreement, with the city’s Municipal Utilities Authority, is expected to significantly reduce the amount of pollution being discharged into the Hackensack River, Hudson River and Newark Bay, and benefit many Jersey City neighborhoods that face environmental justice challenges.
