anyone toy with idea of getting acrylic interior storm windows. i'm thinking of getting some made at about $50 apiece at canal plastics in manhattan.

my crib is either not warm enuff or way too hot.

We have a fake iron stove for our basement, and we love it. It's cheesy, but it's really cute and warms the room up fast.

Yes- we do. We have one that has the option of putting on the heat only and or the fire. We love it. It immediately makes our living room very cozy- which allows us to keep the thermostat fairly low and I love the ambiance it creates. We have a unit that has shelving too- I have not noticed a big uptick in my electric bill- although we use it only when we are in that room. We also seal plastic over our north facing windows every year- and that REALLY helps with winter draft (we have an old house).

How much does one save by putting plastic over the windows?

plastic over windows is a game changer, especially in old buildings. do it. buy extra-strong tape, as the stuff that comes with the window plastic is lousy. you might have to spot-fix your paint, come springtime. seal n' peel removable clear caulk adds another layer of draft protection.

we also lay down extra area rugs (as we're over a chilly storefront, with zero insulation between our wood floors and their tin ceilings.)

since the heat in our place is uneven, we keep the thermostat set to 63, and use oil-filled electric radiators where needed. our winter PSEG bill is always lower than our summer one.

Plastic over windows is a game changer, even in new construction. It's simple thermodynamics and materials science: in general, metal (as most materials) contracts when exposed to cold temperatures, which is why even windows in new construction will experience some draft. After moving into a brand new unit four years ago, I sealed all the windows with plastic and the difference was quite remarkable. I did use the tape that came with the plastic film and it held for the entire season. The trick is to do the application carefully from the beginning, keeping the plastic film very taut around the frame, and to resist the urge to peel and readjust the film.

It is a bit of a hassle, and it takes time and patience. I wish I had done it last year, but inertia took over. I am holding out hope for a milder winter this year, but if it things play out as they did last year, I will do it again. The cost and efforts are worth the savings.

I have looked into this before. If all u are looking for is supplemental heat than electric will do. They only produce about 5000 btu. One issue is the amount of power it draws. If you have it plugged into a 15 amp breaker you will not be able to run much else. If you are lucky to have 20 amp service than you are fine. We live in a 2 floor duplex with one zone heat. I use ours to offset the heat loss which escapes upstairs. During the coldest of weather i can raise the temp in a 20?20 room about 5 plus degrees. This was a better option for me than gas since a gas set up would be about 5k with permits ect.

When in heat mode, that fireplace will run you about $0.22 per hour (assuming it is 1,500 Watts)

If you want cheap heat.. you can go old school

http://www.keystoker.com/

You can get 40 lbs bags of washed anthracite shipped to you...

Expensive to run. You'd be better off running gas to the location and putting in either a vented or ventless fireplace, then it would simply take the place of your other presumably gas heating. Only problem would be if the thermostat is in that space, the rest of the zone would get cold since the system would not call for heat.

I've been thinking about getting an electric fireplace to add a bit of heat to our living room area. Are they effective? Expensive to run? Input is appreciated!
