First-grader with cancer gets princess treatment from school staff, police officers

By Caitlin Mota The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY - A 6-year-old girl battling an aggressive form of cancer was surprised with a tea party fit for a princess, thanks to the staff at her school and a few local police officers.

Ayushi Patel, a first-grade student at School 27, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2015. Her family and teachers describe her as being polite, warm, and ladylike. The past few months have been tough, with the 6-year-old unable to attend school regularly because of her illness.

But that hasn't stopped the Heights school community from rallying in support of Ayushi and treating her like royalty on Wednesday afternoon.
