I've spent quite a bit of time at the children's section of the main library branch. The overwhelming majority of my time there, the kids were playing noneducational games on the library pcs.

As for library hours, are folks willing to pay more for extended hours? Suggestions are free, even good ones like yours, but people's time, including library staff are not.

Worse lol. Yeah I have been there and done that and that was when internet access and things like Facebook and Skype were not a prevalent as they are today for communicating/collaborating. Seems the young people do a lot of that today. Do you really think they want to sit on a hard wooden chair in a Library and get yelled at by the head Librarian for communicating/collaborating?

Healy is gone he is not making a comeback via his Clone get over it.

Well yes, he is a Healy guy. Dan had multiple failed runs at office while he saw Mayor Fulop win both seats he coveted (Council, then Mayor). He then made a deal with the devil and joined Drunk Jerry (amazing video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEjetFzyYgo), and has since been a lighter version of Yvonne, obsessed with Mayor Fulop and pretty much opposed to anything he does. Mayor Fulop could cure cancer and Levin would be against it.

what has been completed, looks beautiful, but a good portions is still closed including the reading/reference/magazine area. the project was originally scheduled to be complete in November 2015 and delayed multiple times.

in a city that has a reputation (fair or not) of poor schools, so how do we continue to accept poor library service access.

we use (or would like to use) our library for computers and internet connections, services such as literacy programs for young children, meeting spaces for community groups and students to study and meet with fellow students for homework and projects, and technology ?petting zoos? that provide opportunities to explore 3-D printers and other tech gadgetry. do we have that?

is there a library strategic plan? I have not been able to locate one. our mayor talks about striving to be the ?best mid-size city in the country?, but surely the poor state of our libraries (and most all other infrastructure) does not put us on the map.

construction aside, our library has the most limited hours in the area.

These the hours of the the Bayonne library-
Monday - Thursday 9:00 am - 9:00 pm
Friday - Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Sunday Closed

These are the hours of a nearby suburban library (South Orange)-
Monday 9 am - 9 pm (children: 11 pm - 8 pm)
Tuesday 9 am - 9 pm (children: 9 am - 6 pm)
Wednesday 9 am - 6 pm
Thursday 9 am - 9 pm (children: 9 am - 8 pm)
Friday 9 am - 6 pm
Saturday 9 am - 5 pm
Sunday 1 pm - 5 pm

and there are towns that with even more access.

Mr Smith,

Thanks for direct reply in this public forum. I've met with Ms. Gardner in the past and have seen inside. I'm well aware of the ADA issues and the power line relocation for the scaffolding.

So we still have another (incredible) year and a half to go? Wow-

My question remains unanswered as to the cost (so far) to the taxpayers for the past two months on this scaffolding. A direct answer would be appreciated.

Yes, work is going on inside. I know that. Why any scaffolding was put up on the outside months before any exterior work was even scheduled to begin makes no sense. And it's ugly and impedes the sidewalk on 3 sides of the building...

Hi jcneighbor, thanks for your questions about the scaffolding at the Main Library. As you know, we are in the middle of a major top-to-bottom renovation of one of the oldest and most iconic buildings in the city. The building is a beloved architectural treasure and our goal is to make sure it continues to serve Jersey City in glorious condition for at least another century.

We take our responsibility seriously as caretakers of the many Library buildings all over the city, and we are completing the work at the Main Library as quickly as possible while maintaining a high standard of quality. We are also doing the most we can to minimize disruption to our patrons and neighbors; we know it?s frustrating to see work going on for a long time and we are grateful for your patience and understanding during this temporary process.

The scaffolding was erected as part of the current project in Phase II, which is replacing the aluminum windows with historically correct and energy-efficient wood. That work is ongoing, though it may not always be visible from the outside. As sometimes happens on large construction projects, we have had a few unexpected delays. The power lines were too close to the scaffolding, and we had to wait for some time for PSE&G to relocate the power lines, to prevent the workers, staff, and patrons from being injured. The Main Library will remain open during this phase of construction.

Also, please know you have a standing invitation to come inside and meet with the library director, who will gladly give you a tour of this historic building, so you can see first-hand what has been done. We think that you would really appreciate the time we have spent renovating the building, making it ADA accessible, building a new elevator and bathrooms, and more.

Our goal is to complete the entire renovation project by the end of 2018.

Thanks again for your questions. Please feel free to contact me directly anytime.

-Shane

The library's communications director is Shane Smith at ssmith@jclibrary.org. Maybe he can tell you what's going on.

After plastering the outside of the main library with scaffolding roughly 2 months ago, not a single bit of exterior work has been done. The scaffolding is massive and took a major crew about a week to erect. How much are we paying for this (presumably rented) scaffolding to sit there? And are they EVER going to finish the library? It seems like the inmates are running that insane asylum...

The Jersey City Free Public Library's main library is open for business once again.

This morning the main library resumed its regular operating schedule -- 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays, officials said. The Lending Department, New Jersey Room, Bonetti Children's Room, Biblioteca Criolla and Literacy Department are open to the public, while the Reference Department and Federal Documents Department will remain closed as those areas continue to undergo renovations.

Phase III will move forward as soon as possible after the completion of Phase II. We will keep our patrons and the neighbors of the Main Library updated about the details of the renovation schedule as it develops.

Phase III will include several large-scale improvements, such as the full renovation of the Reference Department and Government Documents Department, renovation of the interior staircase and public corridors, a complete overhaul of the building?s heating and air conditioning systems, and refurbished third-floor restrooms.

Thanks again for your interest and your questions! Looking forward to seeing you back at the Main Library on May 1 or after.

-Shane

Hi everyone, thanks for your interest in the Library renovation progress!

The Main Library is reopening May 1, 2017 as scheduled.

We are in Phase II of a 3-phase renovation process. Over the past three months during the closure, we continued asbestos abatement. In this phase we are also replacing the aluminum windows with historically correct and more energy-efficient wood. The scaffolding is up and work on the windows is set to get underway.

We know it's frustrating when the Library isn't open when you want it to be, so we are scheduling the work to maximize the amount of time the building can remain open to the public during the renovations. Of course, this also makes the project last longer than if we remained closed the entire time. We really appreciate the support of all our patrons, and the neighbors of the Main Library, as we do the work that needs to be done.

The Main Library is a 116-year-old architectural treasure and a center of Jersey City's community. I encourage you all to come by after we open on Monday and see the progress for yourselves.

Any questions, please call or email me directly: 201-547-4579 ssmith (at) jclibrary (dot) org.

Thanks!

They've pushed back the estimated completion date so many times I don't even pay attention anymore. I live 100 feet away and they're spending all this week putting up scaffolding. It's LOUD around here. Parkman must be going nuts since his house is next door-

i believe they meant May 1, 2018.

It's a disgrace how much of the past 5 years that library has been closed.

Now it's window replacement.
You should live up against a common wall, the last five years have been a bit of a nightmare.
