Which H Mart do you go to? I'm just wondering which is accessible in 10 minutes?
Their website shows:
Cherry Hill
Edison
Englewood
Fort Lee
Fort Lee - Hmart Fresh
Leonia
Little Ferry
Ridgefield

I can't get to any of them in much less than 30 minutes, but I wish I could!

I remember browsing through their cabbage. Bugs started pouring out from between the leaves. I jumped into the air and ran out. Haven't been back in 3 years.

I actually used to dread going into 555 the few times I had to. The smell of fish (or whatever it was) was just really very overwhelming

Agree. When Asian Food Markets first opened up, their produce was quite sketchy and 555 was consistently fresher and cheaper for the veggies/fish/ingredients I usu bought. Then 6 months in, Asian Food got their act together and 555 produce started to be quite wilted. I miss 555 before the decline :(

H-Mart got really expensive over the last two years... Esp their meats yikes. A lot of things are double the prices of local shops and 555.

I just checked the Chinese-language site, and it looks like the job fair info was posted on 10/6 as well. I wouldn't be surprised if someone in corporate put it on the website as an afterthought. Word was probably out well in advance through the unofficial job boards that Chinese immigrants use and through local employment agencies.

If that's the case it could well just have been cover in case anyone ever asked why they didn't hire any locals. "Well we HAD a jobs fair..."

But I agree it's bad that someone in JC would have to schlep out to Edison.

It looks like it still is. They just held a job fair this past weekend for both NJ locations.

That's good news. Went to their site and on the deals scroll was my favorite ramen! If they have good produce, fish and meat they'll be popular. If they have a good steam table and chinese cold cuts area like Asian Market I'll be a regular. Lord knows "Old Colony" needs some help.

Per my tenant:

555 gets most of its business from Asian (mostly Chinese) who drive out from remote locations (suburbs) to load up on their traditional food items. When the new Asian Market at 440 was in the works, it was in a better location, and was going to be a bigger store. So 555 was doomed.

I remember the Foodmart International (where the Target is now) back in the mid 1990s. The owner of the property (LaFrak?) decided an Asian market back then didn't fit with the ethnicity / shopping needs of their tenants. The lease wasn't renewed. Now that store was YUGE! Lots of live fish in tanks.

Foodmart International was awesome and the fish section was freshy fresh.

Target prolly came in at MUCH higher rent so they got tossed.

555 was a disgusting filthy place with many outdated items kept on the shelf - let alone the nasty hot counter they had set up.

Foodmart International was great I could spend hours in there looking at all the products from Eastern Europe and South Asian countries. When they closed I would go to their other store in Ridgefield but it was not as good.

This is down the street from the new 7 story Holiday Inn. I bet the 555 site gets redeveloped too. Times are changing, even Hooker Ave.

Drove past there Friday and it's gone, store for rent. Bummer, it was convenient to stop there for produce, Asian ingredients, fresh bait, and lunch if I had forgotten how mediocre & bland the hot food was.

Pray for Asian Market. Though judging by how busy they were last weekend, they don't need it.
