Yay! It's only taken 10+ years, a lawsuit and $4 million. Not bad for the Port Authority I guess.

It almost - almost - feels like a petulant response to being forced to have to put in an elevator....

It probably is a petulant response. It's amazing that an elevator got put in at all, despite there being a lawsuit forcing the PA to do so, because if they didn't comply with the terms of the verdict, what is the court going to do? Jail the entire PA governing board? Cut off state funding? There was no real way to enforce this verdict.

The PA claimed that the "new" entrance on Marin and Columbus was not really new but had been designed years before, before any ADA laws existed and was just an old entrance being reopened. How they could not find a way to accommodate handicapped people when the new entrance was built just shows how rotten they are, but I guess they figured they had a good chance of getting away with it, and they almost did.

The bit that will be sure to annoy me going forward is that the style of the existing entrance and the handicap elevator will be adjacent and inconsistent at the same time, and thus thoroughly garish. They can throw another 100k at it, and re-do the above ground part of the existing entrance on the south side of Columbus.

So, the article says the elevator is set to open July 2. I predict it will be out of service by July 5.

There was an elevator at the Grove PATH station but was removed a long time ago.

You are bashing Unions you will get a lot of pushback on this board.

You know, I won't say it's isn't a cesspool of graft and corruption, but I know a PA senior architect and have discussed some of this stuff with him. They just see it with a "why should we, what do we get out of it" viewpoint of benign indifference. The PA simply doesn't see itself as a service entity, it exist to preserve itself and expand it's own power and prestige, and always has. That's why we have the White Elephant Oculus, when the money would have been much better spent improving the PATH service and thus the quality of life of the people that use it.

Just remember, the PA was created to build a Hudson freight crossing, and still hasn't done it 99 years later even after it's built 3 World Trade towers. That's all you really need to know.

PATH station elevator at center of 7-year legal battle set to open

JERSEY CITY -- Nearly 16 years after advocates for wheelchair users first demanded access to the Grove Street PATH station, crews are putting the final touches on the station's new elevator.

The $4 million elevator, located at the corner of Grove Street and Columbus Drive, is set to open on July 2, according to the Port Authority. Construction began in the spring of 2015.

Work is ongoing by all appearances. I noticed yesterday that structural framing was recently installed in the slab opening, extending down to the platform level.
