prepa has been mismanged for years. puerto rico should give prepa to the bondholders or sell it to a private entity that can better manage prepa.

puerto rico can repay its debts.....the fact is that the governor is taking the easy, politically expedient way out. six months ago, padilla said that pr could repay, and then it hired some judge who obviously is going to claim that puerto rico can not pay; the governor is the paymaster.

puerto rico needs some type of oversight to cut the fat and raise revenue, and if that is insufficient then maybe puerto rico might deserve some type of haircut.

interesting article from reuters, stating that puerto rico is only capturing 56% of its taxes due.

PR's debt per capita is 16K per capita. GBP per capital was 16K in 2010 (and this includes government spending). What makes you think this can be paid back?

nah...puerto rico's debt can be paid back. stop the tax evasion, sell prepa, cut pensions benefit (fyi, interest payments to bondholders are EXPLICITLY given preference over pension payments, education payments in the bond indentures)

why doesn't puerto rico sell prepa or give it to the bondholders if it can't pay? damn, i hate that i'm sounding like a republican! or maybe rahm emanuel! i am hopeful that congress will not allow chapter 9 for puerto rico...san juan and pr's other ugly cities, perhaps, but not for the commonwealth.

Show your math
pr's debt does not need to be paid all at once. if puerto rico better managed its finances, reduced MASSIVE tax evasion and reduced headcount, closed schools, etc, then its debts could be paid back. puerto rico is no detroit!

I haven't seen any other candidate, of any party, cattle roping press to keep them away. Of course, no other candidate would seem to need to keep the press away either!

You haven't? Seriously? Did you forget about Christie keeping out local press and only allowing national press recently?

Ultimately, this is the saddest field of candidates ever. The Republicans are trotting out the absurd while the Democrats have a re-run with a different gender in the starring role. This really sucks.

Er, no. The private meeting Christie held with the national press was just that, a private, off the record meeting. The local press joined later. The Clinton 'rope the dopes' was a open walk on public streets, lol.

Did Christie host national press members and bar local press? Yes.

What it was for and why makes no difference. The fact remains that the guy did it. It's no different than Hillary now.

Er, no. Christie invited press members from AP, the New York Times (not exactly his biggest supporters, lol), CNN (ditto), ABC, (double ditto), and NBC (triple ditto) to his private chat.

He opened up the off the record chat to national rather than local reporters.

He didn't cordon off ALL REPORTERS.

If the distinction is beyond your comprehension I can't really help that.

puerto rico needs to cut pensions, close schools...there is simply that puerto rico can, but won't do. some of the bondholders need to get paid before pensionholders and that is stated in the indentures.....this is gonna be fun because pr has been managed recklessly for decades and i don't see democratic leaders trying to reverse this,,in fact, they probably want to make the rot seem greater than it actually is so that they can gain sympathy, get concessions from the bondholders.

also, if prepa is so indebted, why not just give it to bondholders and call it a day?

72 Billion in debt ( largest municipal debt outside of NY & Cal.) 3.6 million people down from 4MM just a couple of years ago. Fastest depopulating state or country in the world . They aren't going to pay , get what you can. Outside of hedge funds , PR is cut off from normal capital markets . I get the lack of tax collection , but your looking to squeeze water from a rock.

If you were educated, born and raised in PR . You would leave and move to central Florida as a Puerto Rican you are a US citizen . The growth of tourism in Cuba will be the death blow to PR. It's now time to manage PR into a smaller economy . Has PR been mismanaged , yes . Would any entity buy PREPA ? No. PREPA burns oil to create ALL of PR's power . PR's sales tax is now 11.5% .

so now i see that hilary clinton is in favor of letting msi-managed puerto rico file for chapter 9 which is only available to municipalities. if illinois can not file for chapter 9, why should puerto rico be able to while it also gets benefit of being able to offer lower rates on its debt since interest on pr debt is triple tax free (another subsidy).

one would have thought democrats would have learned something. most of pr's economy is underground and the pr government needs to find a way to tax this.

anyway, if democrats keep up with nonsense of letting pr file bankruptcy, they will be even more in the minority come 2016.

It's not Puerto Rico that would file for Chapter 9, it's some of Puerto Rico's municipal entities, which are no different from municipal entities stateside (such as Jefferson County, Alabama; Detroit or Stockton, California) that have filed for Chapter 9 in recent years except that Puerto Rico's municipalities are currently specifically carved out of Chapter 9 for no good reason. Puerto Rico's debt problem is primarily at the municipal level, though it also has a lot of debt at the commonwealth level as well.

the gop has 14 or 15 or 16 clowns running. mrs. clinton has more skills than all of them combined. still, i think she realizes that the gop is never gonna allow legislation to pass that would allow puerto rico to file bankruptcy; another court tossed puerto rico's attempt last night.

democrats need to learn to be more like merkel and less like tsipras!

Donald Trump agrees with this...

I think it was much more than that....

WaPo: ?Our colleague Philip Rucker reports that initially the press had been able to get close to Clinton and observe and listen as she chatted up voters. Then he said campaign aides unfurled a rope that stretched across the street, blocking access to the candidate. Rucker said they were kept 10 to 15 feet away from Clinton and could no longer hear what she was saying to people.

But the press could clearly hear what some people were saying to her. A group of protesters followed her along the route shouting such sentiments as "What about Benghazi?" and "Show us your e-mails!"

Amazingly, Hillary roping up the press corps in New Hampshire like a bunch of farm animals won't be enough for them to press her on the email scandal, the pay-for-play connections of her time at the State Department/Clinton Foundation . . .

i know one thing. democrats should learn to stop supporting people who don't take responsibility for their own actions. one would think they would have learned something from the last two elections! and i tend to vote democrat when i do vote

"People should and do trust me," she told CNN's Brianna Keilar.

(Creepy in more ways than one)

Imagine what she looks like WITHOUT make-up. Look out Monica, here comes Bill again!! (literally!)

My favorite is how she uses a different accent depending on the state she's in!

so now i see that hilary clinton is in favor of letting msi-managed puerto rico file for chapter 9 which is only available to municipalities. if illinois can not file for chapter 9, why should puerto rico be able to while it also gets benefit of being able to offer lower rates on its debt since interest on pr debt is triple tax free (another subsidy).

one would have thought democrats would have learned something. most of pr's economy is underground and the pr government needs to find a way to tax this.

anyway, if democrats keep up with nonsense of letting pr file bankruptcy, they will be even more in the minority come 2016.
