Is there a good economy for people who spend their food money gambling on lottery tickets?

Fact 1: when publicly run, the operation collected tens of millions of dollars more than it is now.
Fact 2: It is private because a company lobbied and donated to the governor.

Hmm.... sounds exactly like what Menendez is getting strung up for. If only there was a way to hold our scumbag governor accountable too...

While we are on the subject, will you consider making same statements about Hillary (say, about this, or this, or this)? How about Obama sending millions to the politically favored "green" firms that go bankrupt in a hurry afterwards? Would you be interested in the fact that Harry Reid managed to get rich after a life long career in government service? No? Weird.

@caj11...Thank you for hitting every point why a state lottery is bad especially the general fund aspect of it. Even worse is the lottery commission/private operator "overhead" which i can only suspect is paying for lavish conventions, vehicles for executive staff, lobbying, etc.

I just hate the concept of state lotteries. I think they are just a bad way all around to raise money. I don't know New Jersey's numbers, but on average only abou 45% of the money taken in actually goes to the state after paying out prizes and marketing costs. It is more inefficient than just about any charity. Also, while every state claims it goes for education, once the money goes into the state's general fund, it can be spent on anything.

Furthermore, while people generally have to drive out to casinos and make a point to visit them as a destination (although admittedly that has changed over the years; in downtown New Orleans you could go play blackjack on your lunch hour and the worst gambling addicts will always go anyway), you can buy lottery tickets on just about every street corner. I know that people are ultimately responsible for their own actions, but it seems like playing the lottery is just too easy for people with gambling issues. Also, while most casinos go out of their way to keep underage individuals and people who have voluntarily identified themselves as gambling addicts out of their space, there is almost no such policing of lottery tickets. Gas station attendants and other cashiers can't be bothered with that, understandably.

Finally, given all the online gambling you can do, hasn't the state lottery become an antiquated concept?

Associated Press By JEFF HORWITZ
WASHINGTON (AP) ? When Chris Christie privatized New Jersey's lottery two years ago, he said its new overseers would "modernize and maximize" the games.

Instead, a lottery once ranked among the nation's top performers is now lagging for the second straight year, trailing its state income targets by $64 million seven months into the current fiscal year. Meanwhile, the company running it has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to hire lobbyists and a public relations firm with close ties to the governor.

New Jersey lawmakers anticipated receiving nearly $1.04 billion in income from the lottery this year, a number reduced to just $955 million in a revised budget released this month. Having collected an estimated $510 million seven months into this fiscal year, the lottery is not on track to meet even its lowered expectations.

The shortfalls could mean budget cuts to programs directly funded by the lottery system ? such as after-school care, programs for veterans and education for the deaf ? should the lottery's fortunes not improve.
