On things like Bridgegate, Fulop can't keep his pie hole shut. On things like Chico's drunk driving arrest, or his misuse of autos owned by JC, he hides behind 'well, we need to let the process continue'. Maybe one of his two 100K mouthpieces will drop a statement?

What will it take for Fulop to throw this guy overboard ?

He probably has a lot of dirt on Fulop.

Also, Fulop has surrounded himself with a crew of people who have later had very public falling outs with him. Shows a very poor judge of character IMO. He's probably not anxious to keep adding to the list.

I was told the prosecutor is reviewing the charges re: HCIA timesheets.

Grand jury has to decide whether to indict him on assault by auto. Prosecutor said if that happens, that charge and the drunken driving charge will be tried at the same time.

I'm curious as well. I voted against the last administration with the impression that this kind of thing would not be tolerated.
The lack of transparency overall is underwhelming with what was promised.

really, the trolls finally rear their ugly heads, to once again spin this issue away from the mayor. they seem to rise in unison.

Totally agree Chico should resign.

But when has any mayor, or any Governor, or any senior pol - or even any POTUS - demanded a resignation of an elected official without a conviction? Please entertain me. That would be an abuse of office.

Sorry Monroe - it's your argument that's both boring AND laughable.

There are two issues here - the auto/DWI, and the forged hours at his job. The job case isn't getting a trial, that investigation is concluded and speaks to his ethics. Those facts are in and are enough to go on for Fulop, IMHO. The DWI is the only issue, and a big one, that legally isn't settled. But the breathalyzer test is pretty factual and hard to ignore.

I believe the point being made is when his political opponents had similar legal problems, Fulop would routinely scream his head off, saying how improper their conduct was and demanding they resign. He saw no need for the legal process to play out before making such demands.

But now that the shoe is on another foot, and one of his political allies is in hot water, Fulop is uncharastically silent. Making him extremely hypocritical on this issue, and taking away from his moral credibility.

I don't disagree with what you wrote. I was trying to be diplomatic. :)

The fact that he refuses to do so (and we know if it was a political opponent he'd be screaming) leads us to wonder what Chico has on him.

It's not often I agree with Monroe but he's right on this. If Chico had any ounce of integrity he would resign immediately. Given that he isn't Fulop should push him out the door.

You can't hold an elected office if you get fired from your day job? As Christie might put it - "think you are getting ahead of yourself".

A councilman calling for another councilman's resignation is fair game - like Fulop did with Vega. A Mayor calling upon an elected councilman's resignation can be viewed as an abuse of office. You've been engaged in politicking long enough to know the difference.

Nonsense. When the Councilman has a) been using a city agency car under a sham arrangement, circumventing the Mayor's wishes, b) wrecks said car, using a siren, while driving drunk, and c) steals Hudson County money (perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars worth) by a no-show job then d) get fired by said County after an investigation into the no-show job-NO ONE will think it's abuse of power to demand his resignation. First, he can't fire him but he can pressure him. Like he pressured the PA with the port truck scandal. To NOT demand Chico's head is weak, and again, begs the question 'what does Chico have on him'?

When has any senior pol publicly demanded another elected pol's resignation before a conviction? Is Christie equally weak for not demanding Menendez's head? You're simply spinning the story.

And riddle me this-can you seriously say that if Chico was a political opponent, rather than a staunch ally, would Fulop not be demanding him to step down?

Great article. It's nice to see a reporter with memory who will hold those in power accountable.

I particularly liked this bit of hypocrisy from Fulop:

"Mariano is entitled to his day in court but every single vote he makes going forward is tainted," Fulop said.

Oh, and if Terrence reads this, in the section about Maria Maio the quote should be "no faith."

Fixed -- thank you!

Only one of those was while Fulop was Mayor - and in that case he had every right given they were a City appointee. By following due process in Chico's case, he avoids lawsuits against the City and accusations of political motivation against an elected official. No different to Christie's stance on Menendez.
