Agreed 100%. But that's how you know there is something else going on beyond the stated desire to save money. That's how you know politics plays into it.

It's also a power play by Christie against Fulop. It's well known Christie hates Fulop. If Fulop can't stop this proposal, Christie is counting on it destroying Fulop's chances at governor.

After all, Fulop would lose the support of his home city for being inept. He wouldn't have a chance in the governor race.

Too bad fat ass Christie is more than willing to screw the public in furtherance of his politics.

The only time I used the damn Path is on the late hours of night on the weekends. Time to start calling the mayor and members of city council. If this really happens, the traffic at the Holland tunnel and downtown would be unbearable on the weekends. It would reduce property values, and it would affect our hotels. Downtowners better get their pitch forks ready, because if this happens we all get f*cked.

Yes, it would.

The MTA is not a for-profit entity. If you trust their numbers: LIRR loses $7 per ride, Metro North loses $4 per ride, NYC subway loses $1 per ride. They're running roughly $100 million annual deficits, despite raising fares and cutting service in 2010.

The MTA also has $31 billion in debt, compared to PA's $17 billion.

Quote:
Consider they got the MTA up to speed after Sandy in a month and their trains are in better condition overall.

They also shut down in a small rainstorm, have bigger economies of scale, their budgets are a total mess, their fleet is older. Numerous train lines cross rivers via bridges, not tunnels.

Keep in mind one reason why Sandy's damage has taken so long to repair is because the PATH was actually on schedule for signal replacements, which are required by federal law to be in place by 2015, and the feds didn't offer any extensions. Without those deadlines, they could have done service in far less disruptive manners.

Switching management to the MTA won't actually make any of the problems go away. It won't magically pay for signal upgrades, it won't conjure repair funds out of thin air, it won't generate more room for more cars in the morning, it won't spontaneously divest the PA from its real estate holdings. While they are better at communications, the MTA really is not much more efficiently run overall than PA.

And of course, connecting the PATH to the MTA subway would cost billions. Who pays for that? Obviously PA won't want to, since that's capital project money down the drain. And would you like that before or after PA repays what it owes JC in back rent? ;)

If this was a real proposal, the real estate developers would be shutting down development on half finished towers rather than continuing to throw good money after bad.
i hope you are right that this is just politics.....that christie would even allow this to be mentioned shows how inept he is.

MTA loses money too. Mass transit provides intangible benefits that must be subsidized by the government. In fact, there is not a single mass transit system in the United States that operates with a profit, or even breaks even.

I don't think any of the politicians have taken the PATH..... they don't realize what a huge disservice this will be. 10 million is really not that much money. Let Christie trim off the fat from himself first. He's still obese.

Fulop's comments:

?I think that all too often politicians assume the public is stupid, and this is an example of that,? said Fulop, a Port Authority critic whose administration in May filed a $400 million lawsuit against it alleging owed back taxes. ?The fact that you?re releasing a report in between Christmas and New Year's, the fact that there are components of it that are nothing more than a mere power grab.?

Unbelievable, really. The reason most people live in Jersey City is 24/7 PATH. This would be an obvious disaster if overnight weekend service went away.

It wouldn't lose money. One could travel through the entire MTA network back and forth. The MTA is a well run system with brighter bulbs than the PA. Consider they got the MTA up to speed after Sandy in a month and their trains are in better condition overall. When the original H&M line (now PATH) was being built it was to go to Grand Central. Unfortunately it didn't happen. The track system and the cars could easily be retrofitted for this purpose. Will it cost? Yes, but the alternative is not an option.

Eliminating PATH service, as proposed, would be the death knell for Jersey Citys' "Make it Yours" revitalization campaign. Our Mayor has to act forthwith and nip this in the bud. All Jersey City residents, now and future, either working or recreating, will be severely impacted. PATH has been playing with our minds through the year long WTC closure and the anticipated year long 33rd closure, slow service, over-packed trains and general mismanagement. Enough rhetoric. Let the MTA take it over and join PATH to the NY system.

Christie is doing this as a #OOPS# you to the predominantly democratic voters who are serviced by the PATH. Cuomo is no better. Truly disgraceful.

Gas prices are artificially high. Same with tobacco and alcohol, all of which have onerous special taxes applied to them above a standard sales tax.

Mass transit needs to be heavily subsidized to be viable - this is the case all over the world. Indeed, if you consider the automobile to be mass transit it too is heavily subsidized by US policies that fund highways, keep gas prices artificially low, bail out automakers.

Good mass transit is essential to a vibrant, viable city - clearly NOT a priority for a Republican governor, nor NY's responsibility, nor seen as important by oldtime residents and pols in JC, on whose watch the historic mass transit network disappeared.

As a Heights resident, I feel for the rest of you - NJTransit bus is the 2nd leg of our trip home and those stop running by midnight most of the time. 24 /7 PATH service is critical, and needs a movement to protect it.

Absolutely unbelievable. It's already overcrowded at 3am on weekend nights. I recommend everyone write a letter to their office, so that they actually hear your voice.

The Port Authority never wanted to run the trains. They were required to take over operation of the bankrupt H&M Railroad as part of the deal to be allowed to build the World Trade Center.

I suspect the PA would jump at the chance to dump the PATH system all together. In the mean time, the more service they can cancel, the better it is for them. The PATH is a money loser.

Governors Christie and Cuomo have vetoed two separate Port Authority reform bills passed by their respective legislatures. Instead, the governors have indicated that they would institute changes to the Port Authority recommended by a "special panel" the governors formed in May. These changes could be made by the governors without any approval from the legislatures.

Among the changes recommended by the panel: "Eliminating overnight [PATH] service during weekends (i.e., eliminating service on Friday night/ early Saturday and Saturday night and early Sunday) would produce operational and capital expense savings."
