Ceremony to commemorate the Battle of Paulus Hook in Jersey City

On Aug. 19, 1779, what is now Downtown Jersey City was the scene of the Battle of Paulus Hook.

The Jersey City Historic Paulus Hook Association will hold a drum parade on Aug. 19, beginning at the Korean War Memorial at the foot of Washington Street in Jersey City, to commemorate those who fought during the battle.

The battle, between the Continental Army and British forces, is among the most memorable from the Revolutionary War in the Hudson County area.

The march, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will head from the memorial to the Light Horse Tavern located at 199 Washington St. to gather for a toast.

The tavern, established in 2002, is named after Major "Light Horse" Harry Lee who led the Battle of Paulus Hook with a nighttime raid on a British-controlled fort that surprised the redcoats shortly after midnight.

The Battle of Paulus Hook, which ended in 52 total deaths and the taking of 158 British prisoners, was considered an overall success, gaining Lee a Second Continental Congress gold medal, the only non-general to receive such an award.

The Historic Paulus Hook Association, a movement aimed at preserving the neighborhood of Paulus Hook, invite local residents to join them for the annual march.
