What kind of answers do they expect? Break the law enough and you'll suffer the consequences eventually.

Nor do I see in the article how Mr. King was "good natured" and "trying to turn his life around." One of those warrants was for Failure to Appear in court. Showing up for court when summoned should have been high on the priority list if he was going to turn his life around. His family's comments are all pretty ridiculous and they don't seem to understand the difference between right and wrong, or least the mother doesn't realize that her son didn't.

So what's your price on a life? Can we get a chart vs earnings - or whatever comp you think is appropriate?

Didn't you see post #31? The guy's future earnings seem pretty easy to predict.

If the police wind up paying their price then perhaps we should remove the source of the problem...the weapons of the police department.

And how much $$ was this guy's life worth, dare I ask?

From what I've read I don't see how the city should have to pay a penny for what happened. Let the family sue if they want, the city has salaried in-house lawyers to defend it and probably will not be paying some big time firm by the hour in this instance. A few motions to dismiss and the civil case is over.

Sadly this is a common occurrence among certain cultures. You'll see that no matter how heinous the crime, some families will choose to deny that their son was involved in anything bad. Instead they will talk about what a good kid he was, as if that makes it somehow impossible for him to be a criminal.

This guy is accused of trying to take a cop's gun, leading to a struggle where he was fatally shot.

I'd imagine that physical evidence such as an autopsy or forensic report will confirm this guy was shot at very close range and will corroborate that he tried to take the cop's gun.

No matter how strongly some may wish otherwise, if you try to take a cop's gun you will be shot and deservedly so.

Nine months later, family of Jersey City man shot by cop awaits answers

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY -- To Lavon King's family, he was a good-natured, if rambunctious, kid who was trying to turn his life around after some minor run-ins with the law.

To authorities, King, 20, was a repeat offender who led cops on a foot chase on Ege Avenue last June and then tried to grab the gun of the officer trying to arrest him. The officer shot and killed King during what they say was a struggle.

The two sides will likely remain on either side of this divide. There were no known witnesses to the altercation the officer says he had with King in the moments before the shooting, and King's family says they don't expect the officer to be charged with a crime.

If you speak to any seasoned police officer, a use of force report is common practice for arrested individuals to claim after they had been caught.

Some even go out of their way to bang their own heads within the squad car to create an injury and then go on to make a financial claim as well.

The penalty for a false police brutality claim is often nothing more then a community service penalty and the reward could be very lucrative - so its worth a try!

This said, real police brutality videos are requested and displayed via freedom of information requests (it makes for great tv and increases the number of viewers with promo's played repeatedly during the day before the main evening news report), yet false claims are rarely seen by the public (often deemed as not newsworthy) as most police departments file them away as mere evidence or an attorney can request a court order that any footage of the false claim not be released to the media.

...King was being pursued for five open cases in Hudson County Superior Court for drugs and theft, as well as a pending violation of probation, according to the prosecutor?s office.

The prosecutor?s office claims that during the pursuit, King entered an unlocked shed, and one male officer, now identified as Jersey City Police Officer Kenneth Bowes, followed him in with his firearm drawn.

King ? who was unarmed ? struggled with Bowes in an attempt to disarm him of his weapon, the prosecutor?s office said, causing the officer to fire one round from his service weapon, fatally wounding King...

JERSEY CITY - A man who was shot by a Jersey City police officer Tuesday has died from his injury, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.

Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino says Lavon King, 20, had open arrest warrants in Superior Court and Jersey City Municipal Court. King was first observed on Kearney Avenue at around 4:30 p.m. One officer pursued him on foot, and another in a police vehicle.
King allegedly fled through several backyards on Ege Avenue, eventually entering an unlocked shed. Police say King struggled with one of the officers, trying to disarm him.

The officer fired one shot, striking King in the chest. The suspect was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just before 9 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation by the prosecutor's office.

So it looks like he fought with a cop, tried to disarm him, but got stopped and killed? Interesting.

Skeptical - two separate incidents are included in this article. The father of the man who was shot and killed while he was resisting arrest (and had outstanding warrants) in Jersey City (King) is the individual filing a claim. The claim precedes an actual lawsuit filing.

The family of the man who killed Officer Santiago (Campbell) is not filing a claim, yet.

The Justice Department has not yet requested a federal autopsy for Cambell's murder victim or Detective Santiago.

Yes, I just noticed that the guy who posted the article here was incorrect. I don't really know anything about the circumstances behind King's death.

Lawyers for the estate of a Jersey City man shot dead by police in June, as well as the man?s father, have notified the city that they intend to file a wrongful death lawsuit, an attorney said last night.

?There is obviously an excessive force claim and this would be the highest form of excessive force -- an action which involved killing someone,? Jersey City attorney Joel Silberman said of the death of Lavon King, 20, who was shot by a Jersey City police officer on Ege Avenue on June 24.

?It was certainly an unfortunate death, and at this point of time, unnecessary and unfortunate.?

The brief notice of tort filed with the city Wednesday names the King estate and King?s father, Elliot Conyer, as plaintiffs, and the defendants listed are Jersey City, the city police department and unnamed police officers, said Silberman, who is handling the matter with attorney Aymen Aboushi.

On July 24, police officers spotted King, who had open warrants and prior run-ins with the law, on Kearney Avenue at approximately 4:30 p.m. One officer pursued him on foot, another followed in a vehicle, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino said, based on the preliminary investigation.

King was tracked to an Ege Avenue backyard, where he entered a shed. As an officer entered the shed with his gun drawn, King "attempted to disarm" him and the officer fired one round, striking King in the chest, Rubino said, adding that King died that night after surgery.

?At this point the facts are not exactly clear," Silberman said. "What we do know is Lavon King was shot and killed by a member of the Jersey City Police Department. Part of the issue is that there hasn?t been a lot of details released by the city at this point.

"It seems the details of the incident are being protected. There has been little if any communication between the city and Lavon King's immediate family.?

Rubino has said the shooting is still under investigation by the Prosecutor's Office.

Silberman said he also finds it unfortunate that the city appeared to connect the death of King with the murder of Jersey City Police Det. Melvin Santiago, 23, who was gunned down by Lawrence Campbell, 27, of Grant Avenue, on July 13. Police shot Campbell dead moments after he shot Santiago.

"There was a memorial made for in Lavon King?s neighborhood for Santiago?s killer, which a lot of people found offensive and I can understand," Silberman said. "But the city ordered both (the Campbell and King memorials) be torn down.?

?Our position is that the city, in an incident like that, should really be more concerned with building bridges than tearing down memorial for a young man that lost his life,? Silberman said.

Silberman said King's "family is obviously distraught and a lot of his friend and the community are equally upset" because police "have not given any answers or explanations and we are hoping, with the action, some of those answers will come forward and we can help mend some of the breakdowns that have been created between the police department and community.?

Asked for comment, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said in an email: "We don't comment on litigation and the case is still under the jurisdiction of the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.''

Wrongful death lawsuit on way in case of Jersey City man killed by police in struggle

Stop being ridiculous. It's apparent Yvonne didn't produce these videos. I voted for Fulop and remain a big supporter of him, but I found it "eye opening" to have them posted - otherwise, I would never have grasped the sheer level of irrationality at work in neighborhoods like Greeneville in JC. These neighborhoods are pure chaos, no-one seemingly having any authority or capacity for moral suasion standing up. Yet there is this hostility to cops, the city, etc. I think we need to keep our eyes open to what is happening in our city, F.A.B., painful or otherwise.

You just don't get it wishful, Yvonne comes across to me as an agitator, provocateur or worse a sociopath desperate for attention with what, how and when she makes a comment or introduces something on JClist - If you or others think otherwise, good for you.

If I was to contribute images, videos, comments or documents about white supremacy, pro cruelty to animals or outlandish leftist pro-gun or anarchy campaigns, I would be condemned on JClist and rightly so, thus arguing that Yvonne never produced the video she uploads and presents doesn't hold water as she is complicit or has an ulterior motive with that behavior - Her aim has always been to provoke or suggest that she is somehow holier then thou and she we lead us to salvation - For me, I think she is a very scary woman to be avoided.

No one knows how many years, days or hours someone has left in life, but if you spent it worrying about me, then you don't have a life.

It is funny the people at the meeting in your link demanded "police sensitivity training in regards to black culture," but in other contexts, outsiders pretend there is no such thing as black culture and one cannot generalize in such a manner.

This meeting is a great source of information... We have one person claiming that more footpatrol will increase tension and another person saying that more footpatrol is what is needed is your source for the idea of black culture...

Then we have a woman standing up saying that the kid grabs a gun, gets shot in the chest and then she follows up that statement by saying "We need to know why he was shot!"

Sounds like a collage of mensa members... But, yeah, I guess we can get the ideas from them about what does and does not exist...

I placed a video of Michael Shurin on this view. I did not videotape it, Michael goes all over JC videotaping things that are outside the norm of most JC. This is another point of view. Today on the news I read about middle eastern religious fanatics who burned the house and killed 3 people who did not agree with that person view of religion. So you don't agree with Michael Shurin's subject? Who made the chair of what is right or wrong? Michael Shurin's Hudson View has a page in which comments are attached, have you notified him or would you like just to scream and yell at me? By the way, I am responsible for the things I videotape with my name.

You are disgusting Yvonne - This post BY YOU has nothing to do with justice, but rather your warped mind of provocation and hatred of this administration.

You love to fuel the fire, cause unrest and preach hatred and discontent.

This tragic incident will be resolved via an investigation with the outcome being determined by facts.

It wouldn't surprise me that the police officer involved (and those around him) is seeking counselling - Not for one instant do I believe that the officer involved got up that morning wanting to kill anyone - Which doesn't mean a mistake might not have occurred.

This is a matter for the victim, the victims family, police and those directly involved and not some attention seeking nut-job as yourself - Click on the link and seek some help;

While it's sad to see any life lost it appears to be a 'good' shooting-a wanted man, felon, runs from police, hides, and struggles with a cop when cornered, hiding, in a shed. It would not have been good to start a long, hot, summer with a 'bad' shooting by JC police.
