It all matters to everybody pal. Your wall is their wall, your roof is connected to their roof, their porch could connect to your fence, if I do sh*t with a permit, they should do sh*t with a permit.

Cause everyone knows that being concerned about a structural wall in the 3 story house next yours is the same as turning in the neighbor across the street who you've been feuding with about his parking habits.

Edit: I like the nod to Robert Blake in your post. Nice touch.

And you assume that's the reality? If I'm paying for a permit, they're paying for a permit. It's the system. And there would be nothing better than a neighbor doing it all on the sly, when you did it all by the book AND they are asshole parkers....win, win. You got something you didn't get a permit for and your guilt is trolling? Me thinks. That is all.

The horror!

Decks have rules too. How close they can be to the building next door, for example, or how much land they cover. Collapsing isn't a joke either - particularly if it's higher up or people are injured.

I actually said a front porch but try as I did I couldn't find an image of a deadly front porch collapse.

Is it a renovation job or a repair? Repairs (fixing what was already there) doesn't need permits.

Really?! So your attitude is that people should do whatever they want without the requisite permits? What if they are making serious work and burst a gas line? Or, maybe they are doing electrical work and cause an electrical fire. Yes, it IS their property, but given the density around this area, any such "mishap" can have SERIOUS consequences for neighbors.

What if they're just building a porch? That's why I asked.

And porches don't collapse? People don't wire them? These people could be the best at whatever but that doesn't mean that things shouldn't be built to code or at least have a second set of eyes give things the once over.

And put this one in your pipe & smoke it.....

Revenue from permits also goes into the city's operating costs. Shortfalls in revenues from other areas, I venture, winds up getting passed onto us by way of property taxes (& we can all afford that).

So then it depends on what they're doing, right?

First call the cops immediately and they will shut them down right away. Then call the Buildings Dept. on Monday during regular business hours.

Nori - What type of work? It is the Building Dept. that is in charge of issuing permits.

Br6dR - It could affect someone in many ways by way of noise (very early or very late), safety etc.

Even if the issue does not impact a person directly, it doesn't mean it should not be looked into.
