This guy just became a Covey - maybe if we asked nicely he will change the prediction, at least for DTJC.

Covey?

Now it's saying 1.5 on Sunday and 7 on Monday. Looks like they think the conditions for lots of snow are increasing.

Wow. People are going to be freaking out.

Joe Bastardi had a tweet that some forecasts are showing a cold March and snow in the Chicago area through early April.

NOAA predicted a warmer than normal winter for us back in November. Their long range forecasts have become worthless. The Korean weather service got the forecast right, except it got even colder than they predicted.

Over the summer, I was reading that the Farmers Almanac predicted an extremely harsh and bitterly cold winter. Looks like it was spot on.

Friday sounds MISERABLE.

More Snow Wednesday, Thursday and Again on the Weekend

Snow and brutal winds are blasting the region Wednesday, and are expected to return Thursday before another punch on the weekend.

A dusting to 1 inch is likely for most of the area Wednesday.

Forecasters say Wednesday's high temperatures won't break the freezing mark, and wind chills in the 10s and 20s will make it feel even colder.

Temperatures plunge into the upper teens in the city and single digits in the suburbs overnight, and strong winds are forecast for Thursday ahead of a powerful arctic cold front that may bring more snow showers.

Friday is expected to be the coldest day of the week as temperatures struggle to reach the mid 20s. Forecasters say wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph, and tri-state residents should brace for wind chills in the single digits and teens all day long.

After a dry Saturday, precipitation is expected to return Sunday with a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and plain rain developing across the area. Snow and sleet are likely to linger in the city and points north and west, while the system is expected to transition to plain rain along the coast.?

The storm system sticks around through the beginning of the work week, with wintry mixes possible both Monday and Tuesday, forecasters say. Temperatures are expected to rebound above freezing -- barely.

Blame the polar vortex for the below-average cold. The polar vortex is a system that usually stays near the North Pole and Canada, but is pushing south this week.

I meant to type 2.4 inches. That's what my AccuWeather app says.

The cold weather will pass..

However if this weather pattern holds through the summer (big dip in the jet stream, turning sharply Northward on the East coast) we could see a far greater chance of major storm (hurricanes) coming up the coast.

Those aren't degrees, it just means parts of Alaska have a 70% chance of having a higher than average temperature during the period spanning 6-10 days from now.

Pacific Decadal Oscillation is going into a 'negative' phase, which often sets up the weather pattern we see now. High pressure forces the jet stream north resulting in a warmer Alaska and a very dry California. The Mid and East of the lower 48 then get arctic blasts that descend very far South.

Last time we had this pattern (though not a severe) was during the early to mid 90's (remember the 'Storm of the Century'?). That time though, global temps were down due to the multi-year effect of Mount Pinatubo dumping massive amounts of ash and sulfur into the atmosphere.

Some predictions are saying we could see the weather we had during the 70's. Lots of very cold winters. Still not as bad as During the Little Ice Age. There was one winter in the 1780's that was so cold you could walk from Staten Island to Manhattan on the ice.

By John Metcalfe
The Atlantic Cities

Anybody tired of the "polar vortex" yet? No? Excellent, because it's returning soon with all its tail-whipping winds and freezing temperatures as low as 35 degrees below average.

The expected timetable for the vortex ? a name that's not technically accurate in many cases ? is that the cold will arrive in the Midwest this weekend and in the following days paint the South and East with misery. If anybody wants to shoot the messenger, although please don't, consult this prognostication yesterday from the Weather Underground's Jeff Masters. Here's part of it:

Temperatures 20?F below normal will likely invade the Upper Midwest on Sunday, and gradually spread southeastwards during the week. The peak cold is predicted to occur late next week, with temperatures 20 - 35? below normal covering much of the eastern 2/3 of the country. As a result of these new model runs, the natural gas market has been soaring ever since early this morning, and is now approaching a five-year high of $6.

That five-year high had been topped as of Wednesday afternoon, with prices soaring to $6.25. That's understandable considering that in the past month, only 4 days have reportedly had below-average demand for natural gas in the United States.

To get an idea of how widespread this chill-fest is looking, here's the 6 to 10-day temperature forecast issued Wednesday night by the NWS Climate Prediction Center. Darker-blue regions represent areas with greater probabilities of below-average cold (and that thin white band is just-about average):
