MDM & Boris - not going to debate your Reagan-inspired view of world history. Just a contrasting quote from a UK Chancellor of the Exchequer shortly after WW1 related to "profiting from corpses". Interesting after WW1, the US owned most of the world's gold, after WW2 owned the gold standard, then in the 70's became the world's currency reserve.

W. Churchill "The Gathering Storm".

Quote:
"My first question at the Treasury of an international
character was our American debt. At the end of the war, the
European Allies owed the United States about ten thousand
million dollars, of which four thousand million were owed by Britain. On the other hand, we were owed by the other
Allies, principally by Russia, seven thousand million dollars.
In 1920, Britain had proposed an all-round cancellation of
war debts. This involved, on paper at least, a sacrifice by us of about seven hundred and fifty million pounds sterling. As the value of money has halved since then, the figures could
in fact be doubled. No settlement was reached. On August
1, 1922, in Mr. Lloyd George?s day, the Balfour Note had
declared that Great Britain would collect no more from her
debtors, Ally or former enemy, than the United States
collected from her. This was a worthy statement. In
December of 1922, a British delegation, under Government,
visited Washington; and as the result Britain agreed to pay
the whole of her war debt to the United States at a rate of
interest reduced from five to three and one-half per cent,
irrespective of receipts from her debtors.

This agreement caused deep concern in many instructed
quarters, and to no one more than the Prime Minister
himself. It imposed upon Great Britain, much impoverished
by the war in which, as she was to do once again, she had
fought from the first day to the last, the payment of thirty-five millions sterling a year for sixty-two years. The basis of this agreement was considered, not only in this island, but
by many disinterested financial authorities in America, to be a severe and improvident condition for both borrower and
lender. ?They hired the money, didn?t they?? said President
Coolidge. This laconic statement was true, but not
exhaustive. Payments between countries which take the
form of the transfer of goods and services, or still more of their fruitful exchange, are not only just but beneficial.
Payments which are only the arbitrary, artificial transmission across the exchange of such very large sums as arise in
war finance cannot fail to derange the whole process of world economy. This is equally true whether the payments
are exacted from an ally who shared the victory and bore
much of the brunt or from a defeated enemy nation. The
enforcement of the Baldwin-Coolidge debt settlement is a
recognisable factor in the economic collapse which was
presently to overwhelm the world, to prevent its recovery
and inflame its hatreds.
The service of the American debt was particularly difficult to
render to a country which had newly raised its tariffs to even higher limits, and had already buried in its vaults
nearly all the gold yet dug up. Similar but lighter settlements were imposed upon the other European Allies. The first
result was that everyone put the screw on Germany. I was
in full accord with the policy of the Balfour Note of 1922,
and had argued for it at the time; and when I became
Chancellor of the Exchequer I reiterated it, and acted
accordingly. I thought that if Great Britain were thus made
not only the debtor, but the debt-collector of the United
States, the unwisdom of the debt collection would become
apparent at Washington. However, no such reaction
followed. Indeed the argument was resented. The United
States continued to insist upon its annual repayments from
Great Britain.
It, therefore, fell to me to make settlements with all our Allies which, added to the German payments which we had
already scaled down, would enable us to produce the thirty-
five millions annually for the American Treasury. Severest
pressure was put upon Germany, and a vexatious r?gime
of international control of German internal affairs was
imposed. The United States received from England three
payments in full, and these were extorted from Germany by
indemnities on the modified Dawes scale.

Ah okay I take it this was not you - it would've been really funny. I haven't frequented HP in years and since haven't played chess with Boris of HP.

In any case even though we may disagree, I appreciate your insight and candor

Cheers

Exactly. Even dumbing down can be funny, - but it must be built on something, and not just be 100% dumbing.

Boris is not a rare name in the old country. I have an acquaintance whose parents' names are Boris and Natasha. When they came to this country they were somewhat surprised to see Americans' reaction when they introduced themselves.

Well, yeah, this is what I was talking about, - quintessential strawman-oneliner. Sounds zingy, doesn't it? Yet, utterly meaningless. Nobody "credits" Osama for 9/11. This is a stupid thing to say. We blame him for instigating that mass murder, - that is all. At the same time we know that he didn't actually masterminded it, - that was KSM who did.

As for Obama, I am not even sure what I am supposed to give him the credit for? He didn't came up with an idea to capture Bin Laden. The team that found Bin Laden was assembled by Bush. The chain that lead to Bin Laden started according to Leon Panetta (Obama's CIA Director and then Obama's Secretary of Defense) was discovered with the use of some waterboarding also during Bush years. Ok, Obama allowed them to continue, - fine, I give him full credit for that. And then, when they were ready to snatch Bin Laden, at the last moment, when they were afraid that the information has been leaked and it is now or never, - Obama said that he needs to think about it. "Hey, do we have a go to capture Bin Laden? -- Well, let me think about it..." Yeah, right, you didn't have few years to figure that one out? And that in a situation where an answer "yes" is not just the most obvious one, but also the most safest politically. And he had to spend 16 hours thinking.

So, as soon as you think about it a little bit more, as soon as it becomes more than a bumper-sticker, - you realize that the zingy-sounding #11 is shallow, vacuous and quite stupid.

What do you mean "maybe"? This is how Republican party was founded, - by the Evangelical movement of those who believed that abolition of slavery is their religious duty. Surely you didn't think that slaves were freed by some progressivists fed by the steady diet of Kant and Locke.

Ah, yes, I remember, - there is a special Amendment to the US Constitution, the so called "Enabling Act" that says "if the Congress refuses to obey President's wishes, the President shall have the power to enact and suspend laws, and to appoint whomever he wants without advice and consent of the Congress".

First of all, by that time US already was the biggest economy, so you can't explain the past by the future.

Second, "profited by the corpses"? Nice. I imagine by that you mean "forgave debts", right? Those dastardly americans! By the way, any explanation why it was USA that profited, -not Brasil, or Argentina? What's the Party Line on this one?

Dude, sorry, but dollar becoming the currency standard in the middle of the XX century can't possibly explain how the US became the biggest economy BEFORE that. Again, the outcome should follow the cause, not the other way around.

Germany is arguably socialist and China communist, and both seem to be doing ok. And Adam Smith predates Karl Marx.

Germany cut it corporate tax to a flat rate to 15% from 25%, which is far less than our top rate of 35% with State tax rates added on top of that. State tax rates can be as high as 12%.

The effective German corporate tax rate (adding in stuff like a German reunification surcharge and trade taxes) is under 33%, which is much better than the USA.

The German dividend tax rate paid to individuals is higher than the USA (20% vs. 15%). However, the tax is applied to only 1/2 of the dividends paid, which makes their dividend taxes lower.

Flat taxes, corporate tax cuts, and lower rates for dividends is something the American Left has vehemently opposed. Germany's tax policy is actually to the right of tax policies that many Republicans would support.

As for China: China may call themselves communist, but they aren't. Mao and the Great Leap Forward was a long time ago. China now has private property, a stock market, and private industry. China is more fascist, where the government has lots of influence (often providing help to favored companies), but not outright control. Smaller businesses pretty much get left alone. China's top corporate tax rate of 25% is also lower than the USA's.

To Boris:

1. Isolationism examples: WW1. WW2. The US let the old empires wipe themselves out and profited from the corpses.

Actually we got dragged into both conflicts. WWI we had Germany actively sinking US flagged ships (including passenger liners) via unrestricted submarine warfare. Still, that wasn't enough. What pushed the USA over the edge was Germany's promise to Mexico to give them Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona if they joined the Central Power. The USA had been putting up with border raids by Mexican bandits in the recent past and sent into Mexico a punitive expedition. Relations as a result were already testy.

WWII we got attacked by the Japanese (before they declared war) and Germany declared war on us. Didn't have much of a choice on that one.

As for getting "rich".. both wars were pretty devastating to the US economy. After WWI we had very high inflation from all the money printing, which then through us into a deep depression in 1920 - 1921 (history has pretty much forgotten about this economic disaster).

In WWII we were under severe rationing making life pretty miserable. My Dad was one of the lucky ones as a teenager. As a farmer, they were given a larger gas ration so him and his friends got more girls since their vehicles could actually be driven. However, the local farmers had to arm themselves against poachers. One farmer found all his dairy cows had been slaughtered (illegal meat trade). After the war, we experienced periods of historically high inflation and over four recessions as all the war time money printing worked itself though the economy. The 1950's was not the 'boom times' conventional wisdom makes it out to be.

3. Dollar currency standard: it became the standard after the collapse of the gold standard because it was the safest haven, not the biggest economy - also see point 2.

Brenton Woods agreement (circa 1945) made the dollar the reserve currency that was supposed to be backed by gold. All other countries in the system agreed to tie their currencies to the dollar, with the option to turn in dollars for gold. The Fed printed too many dollars and Nixon defaulted on the gold obligation in 1971. The inflation-fun-time of the 1970's to early 80's was the result.

Fact.

The woman holds a doctorate in politics, understands many issues far better than anyone else and the best that the opposition uses to try and discredit her is to claim community college flunky, drug addicts get better ratings and homophobia. Goes to show the weakness of the argument.

Silly, we have a thing called the Constitution. Obama was put over the knee of the SCOTUS and spanked over recess appointments, so I don't think he'll be too aggressive in that manner.

Obama got EVERYTHING he wanted with his 'signature' accomplishment, Obamacare. And we know how that turned out for him.

I guess when your POTUS has gotten nothing right since the last State of the Union address, and has Democratic candidates running away from him before the mid-terms, you need to flood the air with static trying to distract.

And flying in the Ft. Lee mayor shows how scared they are of a Christie POTUS run, doesn't it?

You might be watching too much Fox News if:

1. You are OUTRAGED at how Obama has shredded the Constitution but can?t name any rights you?ve lost since January 20, 2009.

2. You think record breaking cold weather in the middle of winter disproves ?Global Warming.?

3. You think record breaking cold weather in the middle of winter disproves ?Global Warming? but record breaking heat waves in the summer are just a fluke.

4. You hate Obama for the almost 1700 American lives lost in Afghanistan under his watch but have no idea how many died in Iraq before he took office (Hint: more than 4000).

5. You call Afghanistan ?Obama?s War? but ignore the entire first eight years of it.

6. You think there?s no way Chris Christie knew about the scandal unfolding in his own office but Obama clearly knew what a small IRS office in Cincinnati was up to.

7. You think 4 Americans dying in Benghazi is ?the worst tragedy since 9/11.?

8. You denounce Bill Clinton as an adulterer but give a pass to David Vitter and Mark Sanford because they apologized.

9. You are both convinced Obama is a secret Muslim and still go into a frenzy when someone mention Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

10. You really do think Obama is a secret Muslim terrorist that drinks beer, eats pork, attended church for years (ARRRGH! Rev. Jeremiah Wright!), had his daughters baptized, had bin Laden killed and has had more terrorist leaders assassinated than every president before him combined.

11. You think bin Laden was responsible for 9/11 because he ordered the attack but Obama gets no credit for bin Laden?s death because he only ordered the attack.

12. You swear that Obama is coming for your guns.

13. You?ve been swearing that Obama is coming for your guns since before he was elected.

14. You swear that Obama has actually reduced your right to own guns but you can?t explain how.

15. You have ever used the phrase: Obama?s Katrina to describe something that was not the bungled response to a major natural disaster.

16. You?re positive Obama isn?t a true Christian but then got mad he had too many Christmas trees (no, seriously, that was a thing).

17. You think Muslims are terrorists and religious fanatics but think protecting gay kids from bullies is an attack on your religious beliefs.

18. You constantly complain the liberal media takes things out of context but you?re deeply offended that Obama said ?You didn?t build that.?

19. You think that ACORN stole the 2008 election. Maybe the 2012 one as well.

20. You think ?voter fraud? is an actual problem but can?t explain how cutting early voting stops it.

21. In 2009, cutting the $1.4 trillion deficit in half was the most important thing in the world but in 2014, you could care less about how much the deficit was cut (Hint: in half).

22. You hate Obama for not having served a day in the military but voted for Mitt Romney.

23. You think Obama is the laziest president ever for taking so many vacation days but ?forget? that it?s less than a third of his predecessor.
23a. Never mind how many days he took, the president shouldn?t take vacations during a time of crisis!
23b. Never mind that Bush took vacations during two wars and a recession! Obama is spending tax payer money to loaf about!
23c. I said WHO CARES that Bush took more than three times as much vacation time? It only counts when the black guy takes a vacation!

24. You think Obama embarrassed America by bowing to other heads of state but forgot about this:

Bush_Prince_Abdullah_kiss_hold_hands

25. You think Obama is terrible for the economy while the stock market continues to hit all time highs.

And, if you try to argue by flooding the field with strawman arguments, each reduced to but a one-liner slogan, you must have never watched FOX.
Because long sentences like complicated.

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/01/ ... igns-watch-much-fox-news/

26. You think the stock market hitting all times highs doesn?t mean the economy is improving but you still believe in Trickle Down Economics.

27. You claim you don?t believe in Trickle Down Economics but insist that increasing taxes on the rich will hurt the economy.

Well for the first two names:

Warren Wilhelm. This is de Blasios birth name and was all the way to college I believe. But I get it, it's an unelectable name.

Barry Obama: well, that's what the president preferred to be called because Barack Hussein Obama sounded too ethnic according to his insiders so he ran on Barry until the presidential election.

Fool-op: ok this one is mine. Steve sounded good coming out of the gate but man he sure fooled all of us big time. Meet the new boss, same as...blah blah. Oh and he never ever ever passes up a photo op priming the pump for that next step. I have yet to see something other than superficial gilded accomplishments from the guy I supported for mayor. Instead he's the next goddamn Cory Booker fool, just wait until the flights to the west coast and elsewhere. I should have known better than voting for an investment banker. Those people have no souls. But again, I was fooled.

So, in 2 out of 3, I don't see how it hurts my arguments. Just using their names. As Boris said, mr Bush has been called waaaay worse (can you imagine the outrage if we applied the democrat chimp moniker to Barry??? Who look out).

Germany is arguably socialist and China communist, and both seem to be doing ok. And Adam Smith predates Karl Marx.

To Boris:

1. Isolationism examples: WW1. WW2. The US let the old empires wipe themselves out and profited from the corpses.
2. It's never been about naked capitalism in the US. A key ingredient has also been a fair and level playing field created by checks and balances in government, legal and regulatory frameworks. The transparency and trust created has promoted investment and growth.
3. Dollar currency standard: it became the standard after the collapse of the gold standard because it was the safest haven, not the biggest economy - also see point 2.
4. By disruptions - I mean at the macro-economic level.
5. People moved from East Germany to West as much as for 2, as for capitalism.

Barry
Mayor Willhelm
Mayor Full Up (or something like that)

Do you really think that helps any arguement you try to make?

You know, when in Rome... - I think after few years of some people calling Bush "chimp" and "hitler" and so on, some people on the Right decided that this is how one is supposed to talk in certain circles.

Granted, the US won the industrial revolution - though arguably not through pure capitalism. Resources, isolationism, world currency standard, and other tail-winds had their part to play.

Not "industrial revolution", the US won all and any economic competition ever since its creation, up to the point where the government decided to itnervene in the economy.
Second, Russia is no less rich in resources. Brasil, Argentina, Africa, Australia, India, - most of the world has resources.
Third, isolationism, - WHAT isolationism are you talking about? Like when the US sent the Constitution to deal wiht Berber pirates, even though it was may be the smallest of the NAVY nations?
Fourth, as far as currency standard goes, correct me if I am wrong, but you actually think that a country can first make its currency a world standard, - and THEN become the biggest economy in the world? Not the other way around?

But given the disruptive nature of the technology revolution,

Like when people stopped dying at the average age of 40, and due to insrease in productivity could afford to be fed every day and work less than 10 hours a day and have weekends? And to own more than one change of cloth? This is the disruption you have in mind?

I'm not convinced an entirely free market system will work, without some social checks and balances

And, when you compare and contrast East and West Germanies, or North and South Koreas, - and when you look at the constant flow of immigrants that throughout the XX century moved from more socialistic countries to the more free ones, - nothing is convincing? All the experiments of the past hundred years do not look convincing?

To me other red flags include: debt to China, individuals and corporations with more wealth and influence than most nations, the impending death of the dollar

I am afraid to ask, but did you not notice that all those "red flags" came to be AFTER the government started its intrusions?

How do we keep the promise of equal opportunity, when the world is moving to a 2-class system: the have-bots and the have-nots?

Well, by NOT building crony capitalism, that's how. By making sure that it is not the government who decides which business should succeed and which should be taxed into the ground. By remembering that even now 80% of American millionairs were not born millionairs and that american economic mobility is, and has always been the top one in the world.
Again, did you ever notice all the immigrants that came to this nation in the last centuries? WHY do you think they kept doing it? For Social Security that is about to go bankruipt?

Yesterdays ABC News (note, not Fox News) poll showing that almost two thirds of voters don't believe Obama can make right decisions-that must've gutted him to read. So, he'll probably just double down on his failed decision making for the rest of his lame duck term.

"Just 37 percent say they have either a good amount or a great deal of confidence in the president to make the right decisions for the country?s future, while 63 percent say they do not. Those numbers are the mirror image of what they were when he was sworn into office in 2009 and lower than at any other time the question was asked by The Washington Post and ABC News."
