I forgot to add:

When looking at the cheaper (bronze) plans, check how many doctors are in the network. Some people have gotten shocked to find their choices of doctors are very limited. Sometimes requiring VERY long office waits and long travel times.

I got my sister-in-law a catastrophic plan through Amerihealth. It covers checkups and 100% of everything above (pre ACA) something around $6,000. It has an HSA attached to it which allows her to build up $$$ to cover out of pocket medical expenses.

It costs less than $375 a month (which is about $150 more she payed for a similar plan in TX... gotta love NJ).

If you know for certain you won't qualify for medical welfare, you can skip the govt. exchange. You can go directly to the insurance company websites or use a 3rd party like Einsurance. The latter allows you to do a customized search of multiple insurance plans.

My insurance premiums have more than doubled in three years. I wasn't able to continue with BC/BS because I don't have an employee who receives a W-2. I receive a 10-99....much like consultants do.

I am weighing the benefits and feasability of catastrohic insurance. Thank you to those who recommended that option.

I'm not looking for sympathy...just options that other self employed workers are weighing.

This is not a political statement...Obama has many accomplishments that history will remember. His health care reform is not one of them.

To the OP, I'm confused.... Is your issue the cost of insurance or the cost of living in JC?

What does that mean that you don't qualify for self-employment health care? Does that mean that you have the option of getting a plan through an employer?

Also, it would be helpful for you to provide comparison data from the insurance exchange as opposed to simply providing the increase that BCBS wants to charge.

And while you may not need maternity coverage, you are statistically much more likely to need a variety of other services, prescriptions, etc. even if you don't need them at this exact moment. A la carte insurance that would cost more when you need to use those services? Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.

Have you checked your other options on the exchange? You may be able to do better -- even from BCBS. A lot of the companies are suggesting more expensive options to people who can't renew their plans.

So we shouldn't take care of our elderly? Instead of finding a way, forcing providers and suppliers to have more standard pricing, we should just not care for people?

Did he say that? That's a huge straw man argument you created.

I'm not sure why I'm getting singled out here. I think there are lots of information that is left unknown at this point in time.

In no way am I condoning the price increase, but how much of it really is a result of ACA? Or is it that the insurance companies are using that as an excuse to jack up rates in one area to offset another?

I've not heard anything about the HSA accounts going away, which goes along with disaster coverage. Personally, I don't know why anyone would get anything else but disaster coverage, but that's neither her nor there.

I don't see what Jersey City has to do with your health plan, but whatever. Do you not qualify for the tax credits / subsidies?

Probably a bought of serious deflation first due to the amount of wealth destruction going on. Later as more and more of basic services are covered by even more dollars created by the Fed, we will end up with stagflation. The inflation is already showing up in food and fuel prices (fuel that can be easily stored and exported).

Right now the dollars created end up being re-deposited with the Fed (the Fed is paying interest on these deposits). Or the dollars head overseas searching for yield.

My wife's home country put in currency controls. Not the currency controls of the 1980's which tried to prevent dollars from leaving. Thailand is actually trying to stop dollars coming in! Their central bank is forced to print more and more Baht to exchange those dollars. That in turn is causing serious inflation and bubbles (in particular in their housing market). Its fueling growth where there is no real demand. The cost of living has gone up so much that items like food now cost more than it does here in the USA.

This has been repeated in countries all over the world. The so-called 'Arab Spring' was triggered due to food and commodity prices going beyond what people could afford. Revolution was driven by starvation. Countries like Egypt would be having a Somali-style famine if it wasn't for foreign aid.

We are a small company, but tripled in size over the past few years (we even got a mention in Forbes). Two years ago, we finally got a decent health insurance policy. Especially people in my position that don't have much in the way of health issues, but really need to start piling the cash away for old age.

Well.. that's gone now.

I told my boss that I think late 3rd quarter of this year is when the crap will really hit the fan. 3rd quarter is when the H.R. departments start getting the new plan costs for 2015. A lot of people are going to find themselves without employer paid health insurance.

Add on to the fact that the majority of sign-ups are welfare cases. The insurance companies are already talking about the cash bailout they are guaranteed under ACA, as the plans are not solvent with the current sign ups.

Where is the government going to get the money to bail out these companies? Already about 40% of what the federal govt. spends is money borrowed from the Federal Reserve.

My employer got hit with a new ACA compliant plan (ours was to young to be grandfathered). The highlight:

Our rates went up 55%. yes... 55 friggin percent. As a result, our cost of living adjustment was cut by a third and so were our year end bonuses.

Before, we had a high deductible plan to cover the employee and spouse at no extra charge. Now, we have to have several grand deducted out of our paychecks. So it is no longer worth it to be on the company plan. At least I (for now) have a fallback to go back on my wife's insurance.

This also means a tax increase for me because without my old plan, I also lose my HSA. Which means I loose over $6k in tax deferred savings.

My Sister-in-law will also be getting her hours cut when the new Obamacare definitions of part time work kick in. With this pay cut, pretty much all her take home pay will be going to cover her health and term life insurance.

So two pay cuts and a tax increase!

But hey! under our new plan (if I stayed in) I would be covered for pregnancy and hair transplants. Interesting thing about ACA though, middle age men like me have to get pregnancy coverage, but women under 30 are exempt.

I guess age does matter-- he's 44 and I'm 46. I got pushed into the next age bracket so I pay more.

Thanks for the heads up! To live in the NY metro area making a 100k is middle class.

I am a democrat...in fact some would say a liberal.....but , to me, Obamacare is a war on the middle class.

Does zip code factor into how they figure out how much policies will cost?

I used my DTJC zip code. My ex used his Union City zip. Neither of us smoke, we make about the same per year, but he's 2 years younger. He was quoted policies as low as $175/month (without the gov't stipend since his company still offers insurance). The cheapest I could find was $235 (with the gov't stipend).

Garage, while I commend you on telling your story of the oncoming debacle that is ACA, I sure hope you're prepared for immediate onslaught your about to get on this board. God help you...

I'll help prepare you. Get ready for the counter arguments of "it's your fault", "you make too much", "you must be doing something wrong" and the like.

I receieved a letter from Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of New Jersey that due to new federal guidlines I know longer meet the qualifications for self employment health care. I was paying approx $1075 for "silver coverage" for my family of four. Blue Cross is willing to write a new policy for approx $1650....which doesn't include dental, has limited prescription and it makes it much harder to see specialists in NYC. This is 20k a year.
