I peeked into this place today as they were working inside. The space is HUGE, absolutely gigantic.

I think it may serve different demographics. I think of 2B's as a grab and eat/go type of place. Nothing worth lingering over. If Porta steps it up with live music and more pleasing, inviting ambience , id consider it over 2B's and Roman Nose (which I think is pretty good btw).

If Porta serves food late into the night, I can't imagine how both Two Boots and Porta can coexist right next to another.

Will be supporting Porta over Two Boots for sure. Jersey business vs (bad) NY "Chain", good pizza vs. corn meal crust. Easy choice.

Service in Two Boots is pure comedy, would not be surprised to see this drive them out of business... even now I would go to the Bistro walk-up for slice every time over 2B.

What would go over big is a mongoian beef restaurant.

The one in Asbury becomes a nightclub after 10:00 pm when they stop serving food. They move the tables away for the evening. Quote:

I ate at the Asbury location last weekend although I imagine this will have it's own feel to it. Super popular place and in the summer decently long wait. It has a similar look and feel to Razza but much larger. In my opinion it will be well received in the area. Not sure about a club atmosphere, I think more chill, but it will be a place you might go for just drinks or stay after dinner which is somewhat different from Razza or Roman Nose.

Article on NJ.com about their Newark restaurant The Monk Room featured this interesting tidbit:

Smith will open a Porta in Jersey City around the Memorial Day weekend, and Hinchliffe said more Monk Rooms are "definitely a possibility'' in the future.

I don't remember if it was here or somewhere else floating on the internet, but it's been rumored that it will be more of a mediterranean menu. Take it with a grain of salt.

Whatever the case, I'm curious as to how this will end up. Porta is a very interesting place - a weird mix of a club, a family pizzeria, and a hipster bocce court - but I'm confident the JC location will be of high quality and continue to draw the needed action to Newark Ave.

The Monk Room opened a few days ago in Newark. It might give us an idea of what they'll do in JC:

Businesses have been opening quicker under the new administration though. Also it has been easier for some of the new businesses to obtain liqueur licenses I noticed.

Those features alone invite a different type of social scene. Also, AP has always been an entertainment destination, with night clubs, concert halls, the convention center, the beach, and biker bars. I like the pizza at Porta and the year it opened I was there almost every Friday night. I anticipate the pizza and menu being as good. Based upon the space they're opening in, I imagine the scene will ultimately be a different than the AP scene.

I was at Porta last week and asked about their JC plans. They anticipate a Mediterranean-inspired menu but, no, it won't be a replica of the AP location. For starters, the chefs will be different, so whoever they hire for the JC restaurant will have his/her own ideas. The March opening mentioned in that last link sounds rather ambitious and perhaps unrealistic given JC's rich history of delayed openings for new businesses. We'll be lucky if the grand opening happens by Labor Day weekend.

I agree, enough with the pizza. Somebody can make a lot of money here if they open:

- a casual but quality BBQ joint
- a really fun cocktail bar
- a non-theme craft beer pub (love Barcade but it's a large theme bar versus a smallish pub)

However, after looking into this Pizza Porta in Asbury, it seems that it is more of a bar/hangout. In that case, that could be kind of cool.

A quality BBQ place in Jersey City would be a big win. For me, at least. Someone mentioned lucky 7s and I've never been...will have to check it out. But I took a look at the menu and, though they do have BBQ items, I'm looking for more than just sandwiches. I'm surprised something like Fette Sau, of hipster Williamsburg fame, hasn't taken in JC yet.

I still find it hard to believe they will open a pizza place right next to Two Boots and a few spots down from Roman Nose. Looking at these most recent posts, none of the other restaurants the owners have opened have used the Porta name. Perhaps they are planning a new, unique type of cuisine in that space. Only time will tell...

Nemo, thanks for the tip!! Will definitely check it out. Yes Bambou was amazing (the food, the crowd -- straight couples, gay couples, older people, younger people, interracial couples, creative types, etc. -- the decor/ambiance). The atmosphere sort of reminded me of visits to locales in St. Kitts/Nevis where I have distant relatives. Looking forward to Porta. Incidentally, the owners just opened another restaurant, http://asburyparksun.com/classic-fren ... ne-comes-to-bangs-avenue/

Sounds great, I wish I'd known about it sooner. One of my go to's is Saveur Creole in Montclair. Upscale Haitian restaurant with great food, decor, and it's byob!

The poster might be referring to Carrino Brother Provisions, which will be a gourmet Italian deli/market/restaurant and next to Talde in the old police building around there.

The Northeast corner of First and Erie. The word is that the facade will be restored and it will be mainly upscale takeout. It was formerly occupied by a bodega.
