I went there today and found all the things I shop for in Chinatown, Kan Man in Edison and Mitsuwa in Edgewater. This is a welcome addition to my shopping routine and it makes it more efficient.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone tip for that, but I don't like fish, so I hardly ever visit the fish counter. It would definitely surprise the other customers if they were Asian. Asians, especially first generation, hate tipping, and when they do they're usually pretty stingy. Fish cleaning isn't a service they would consider tip-worthy. I have arguments with my parents whenever we go out for dim sum. They always insist on leaving a 10%-15% tip. I or one of my siblings will sneak back and throw extra money on the table.

I was there again on Thursday at about 10:30. The fish were just being put on ice, just as on Monday. The fish guy was very helpful, and said that when he was done unpacking, labels with names and prices would be put out. The scaler did a good job cleaning and gutting out my fish. I gave the scaler a tip which seemed to surprise the two other customers waiting with me. I think it is customary, do you? Did anyone who went later see labels at the fish counter?

There was also a limited amount of bbq'd food. I was hoping to buy some quail, but the guy behind that counter said they'd be coming out later.

So if you get there early to avoid the crowd, you may not have the full array of foods, based on my two visits.

I checked this place out today. Wow! I thought it was great. Granted I am a white chick with only a little knowledge of Asian foods and cooking, but I found what I needed and plenty more things to try in the future.

My g/f went there today, and was quite surprised that the quality of the fruits and produce were visibly second rate to what we saw last week. Go figure. She did get some bbq pork, fresh noodles, snow peas and other stuff so we're having a stir fry tonight.

I do shop there, but you have to be pretty particular about the stuff you buy. Some is fine, some is past it's sell by date.

If you don?t know the HM area there is a store called 440 Farms across rt 440 from the Hudson Mall. It is a no frills kind of place for veggies, fruit, and fish. The parking lot is always packed. They also have an excellent garden nursery in the back lot during planting season.

(can?t help you with your pot search?but back in the day I could have..lol)

Love that spot.

Of course, but plenty of our winter vegetables come from the Southern Hemisphere, so perhaps it's the end of the season there. I get fresh asparagus in season nearby in Meyersville, next to the Great Swamp preserve at Hilltop Farm. I told a friend about it, was raving about the sticky buds and purplish/green color and she said 'you used to talk about pot like that back in the day'!

I rode over there this morning with a friend who had to move his car. This place is very impressive. Very impressed that at 10:00 on a Monday there was no fish yet. This is how it should be - fresh stuff had not arrived yet.

If you need a gift for someone who has everything, try the gallon jug of Oelik Simbal.

They have an amazing selection of noodles, including oat, yam, sorgham and millet.

Where on Central Ave. ? Hopefully all of those green joints will have it at the same price. I went to Corrado's 2 weeks ago and they had asparagus for $2.49 lb

Edit to add I did get some Chinese broccoli and baby bok choy, so it's all good.

Corrado's has had some, but it's been lousy. What size is a 'bunch'?

Just got back the prices are unbeatable, the scene is chaotic, the choices are amazing, checkout smoother than silk. Overall a great experience. To beat the crowds you might want to go during the week.

Excellent addition to the HM area.

I was in the area on Saturday afternoon lifting at RF. I took a walk over and peeked in the new market. The place is beautiful, clean, bright, massive (25,000 sq ft) , and packed with shoppers. Great to see the HM parking lot full of cars from the market entrance all the way to Taco Bell. (like the old days..Cory)

I don?t eat the stuff, I am a beer and burger old-timer type of guy ,(still hoping for the return of the Ponderosa Steak House) but good luck to the new addition. Welcome.

This is the chains website, JC is on it already:

http://www.asianfoodmarkets.com/

Please visit the other stores down in the HM area when you are shopping at the market. You can get your coffee in the mall.

http://shophudsonmall.com/

PS ? to the owners you should rent one of the 3 empty stores in the HM and open up a little Asian Restaurant to go along with your store. $$$$

Just stopped there today. Wife was pleased as they carry a lot of her Thai stuff. 555 has been cutting back on Thai.

I suspect this place might kill 555. I would hate to lose their satellite store on Central Ave. Its so convenient to get fish from there.

My theory is BJ's is paying them off to stay out. Easy money and the only explanation to avoid this market and make us drive 1/2 hr to get to a Costco.

I was at Asian Foods the new Asian supermarket on 440. The store could be a clone of Kan Man in Edison. I like shopping at Kan Man so I was very pleased with the variety of fresh, frozen and shelved items. I bought the lunch special which is very good it's rice with 2 entree selections for $5.50. Pork buns are fresh and filled with roast pork. Prices for most items are standard and great for others, I bought fresh blueberries for $1.88. If you like shopping at Kan Man you will like this place.

Safety is not too much of concern from the lightrail station, however it is quite a hike from the station especially if you are traveling with packages. I walk pretty fast and it takes me about 15 min to walk to 440 from Westside rail and if I had a few grocery bags it might be like 20 min walk. I wanted to join the gym over there but decided not to due to the walk from the rail.

IMO Hudson Mall is more convenient by car or even bus since the bus leaves you closer, but with the bus you will have to take it to Journal Square and transfer to the Path which is two fares. Or take the 80 bus from Grove street and then walk 10 min from the bus stop which is still a pain.

Yes not much on Claremont, but I would say safe during the day. If you want you can walk along West Side Avenue to Culver and then down to rt 440. That has more activity with NJCU and the SS office. Culver will also take you to a cross walk at rt 440. Cross by the car dealers and than walk over to the HM area.

Yes get off at the West Side Station and walk down Claremont to rt 440.

It is about two long city blocks, one block being the LR parking lot and the other the West Side Station Condo?s. When you get to rt 440 cross only at a cross walk!!!

OK, just back. (I wish it was easy to post photos here, because I took some just to remember the prices).

Very clean (but it should be at this point), some stuff was very well priced. Very nice produce; a 16 oz tray for excellent looking blackberries was $1.88. 7 medium grapefruit for $1.99. Chinese broccoli tips, 1lb/$1.68. Overall the produce and fruits was pretty impressive, although I don't know how the values were for things I usually don't purchase.

Yes, they have hot food. Yes, they have fresh fish in tanks, I recall tilapia for under $5/lb. The usual huge choice of gyoza, dumplings, shrimp/egg rolls, scallion pancakes, all in the frozen sections. No bargains on tea from what I could see, although the choices were so great I may have missed something. Pallets full of giant sacks of rice for those interested. Some interesting flavors of ice cream. All those mocha and Asian sweets that I don't have much experience with.

Certainly worth a visit, I'd imagine on the weekends it'll be quite a scene.

Sounds like it is similar to Kan Man in Edison. I love shopping there.

They should take over the dim sum and bahn mi business that we had downtown on the weekends at the Vietnamese grocery store that just closed.
