I was working when this poor guy came in last night. He was banged up pretty bad. I felt so bad for him. He is a very lucky man.

Jonathan Lin/The Jersey Journal
An 83-year-old Jersey City man was struck Thursday night by a car going the wrong way on a one-way street in Downtown Jersey City and was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said. The man was crossing the south end of Washington Street at 6 p.m. when the car struck him, a witness told officers at the scene. Vladimir A. Stepanov, 76, of Jersey City, the driver of the car who hit the man, said he had mistakenly made a left turn onto Washington Street from Montgomery Street, the accident report stated. Stepanov said he did not see the man "until it was too late," officers said. After he hit the man, Stepanov got out of his car to check on the man's health. Officers issued Stepanov a summons for careless driving and a summons for going the wrong way on a one-way street. The police report did not say how fast Stepanov was driving when he struck the 83-year-old. The 83-year-old man was taken by ambulance to Jersey City Medical Center for facial fractures and bleeding on the brain, a police report said. He was in stable condition on Friday afternoon, JCMC spokesman Mark Rabson said.
