Me too! I was out for a run around 5:30am and saw the first one at Warren & Morris; man, I jumped across the street in what seemed like one step. Then I smelled a second one on Washington and 1st. Insane!

Had two encounters of the skunk kind this morning. One skunk coming down the sidewalk toward me at 9th & Coles. I let him have that side to himself since he was obviously enjoying his morning stroll.

The second one was a little close for comfort. I surprised it on the waterfront walk, where it turns a sharp corner in front of Avalon Cove at 6th St. This one had its tail up, made a brief stand in front of me and then ran off into a bush. Thought I was going to need the tomato soup on that one.

This was all at around 5:15 - 5:30. Must be near the end of the wildlife shift.

I grew up in the country and we saw lots and lots of skunks waddling happily through the backyard at night-we humans kept a wide berth (as suggested). Sadly for everyone, our cats did not! We never worried about rabies from the skunks, but if you see one acting strange during the daytime call animal control.

I live at Liberty Terrace and we had a family of skunks living in Colgate Park next to our building - there like a half dozen!

Rabies is less common than you think.

Like I said, keep a wide berth, and you won't have anything to worry about.

One actually got into the stairwell of our building in Paulus Hook. It's a side door and the spring to close the door must have been too slow to close the door behind whomever exited and it scurried in! Man, it was NOT pleasant. Our super chased it out, but we had to get an exterminator to come spray some special deodorizer to help dissipate the smell.

Look on the bright side-this could be a Darwinian solution for the off leash dog owners! :)

Saw a beautiful skunk on Jersey Avenue and 1st yesterday morning before 6AM. The white stripe was long and flowing, like a luxurious mohawk. I got a photo, but it didn't come out very well. At least he wasn't heading towards me! Yeah, I know, I say 'beautiful' now... until i get sprayed :(

I read that their eyesight is poor, but their hearing is good, so I make sure to make some noise.

I've heard of the Skunks living around JC. I saw one last year in Morris Canal park. Has anyone heard of anyone being bothered by them?

Unless they cause a problem, I'm all for some interesting wildlife. But with a family of them roaming around, I wonder if they lost their home?

I'm in Paulus Hook and I've had a skunk near the apartment four or five times this summer, who apparently was running into something he wanted to deter. Nothing like the sweet smell of skunk on a summer evening!

There is a skunk in my back yard (van vorst) and it just scared the bejesus out me. I smelled it last night and just thought the neighbors upgraded their stash. Nope. Skunks. 3 feet from my Weber. It's an odd feeling to expect a cat/raccoon/opossum and see the striped creature of the night. Im not sire why..but skunks ate the worst. Is there a number I can call or is this just a case of "city living"? Darn skunk almost made me drop my sandwich.
