I love how they are resisting the expense of complying with an ADA order to install an elevator, but are happy to have a nearly 24/7 maintenance cycle on the escalators. There is no hope for us.

It's not the unions in this case, it's the management. Someone much higher up made the brilliant decision to cheap out and buy INDOOR ESCALATORS to install at Grove. They're always broken because they're not supposed to be exposed to the elements.

Note also the mention further downthread that all the maintenance documentation for them is in French, so the repair guys have to guess their way through fixing them as best they can.

and it's not like the escalator even does anything. You still gotta climb over a turnstyle and walk another flight of stairs regardless. Insane.

Yeah.. how much money has gone into that stupid escalator for like 10 stairs. Put some damn steps in there, and do something on the other end.

Ha ha ha! Same sentiment expressed a few minutes apart.

I really wish they would stop the madness and just get rid of it. It would be more useful to make it into regular steps. As for an elevator, I believe the PA has been fighting tooth and nail to NOT do it. They were sued in federal court for violation of ADA provisions and their attorneys have been arguing the case for years now. There you have it folks... the PA sticking it to the people, again.

The unions call it planned obsolescence. They are using parts that must be maintained/replaced every few days (as anyone can observe over the past 5+ years)

Can someone explain how the escalator only worked for about 3 days and now it's broken again?

What about a call to "7 on Your Side" or "Help Me Howard". A camera in your face seems to be the only way to get those responsible to take notice nowadays. If we've got any members on the board with physical disabilities who use the PATH everyday, you guys have GOT to be pissed as hell about this.

How about adding several sliding poles. They have very low maintenance.

If they started doing renovations like that, depending on where the money came from, they would have to make the station ADA compliant. I still wonder how they built the entrance on Marin and got away without making it ADA compliant.

I wish there was some way to get down to the platform with out taking the stairs. I know there are people with disabilities, myself included, that have a real problem with the stairs. Especially at rush hour.

The escalators being out of service at PATH stations are part of the Port Authority's job stimulus program for the escalator repairmen union.

lost cause. every week i bring it up to the PATH support and it just clearly doesn't even matter to them. ridiculous. i've more than once suggested they just make them stairs since working escalators are apparently not something they care about

I was just thinking about this as I exited the PATH stop this evening.

I cannot remember the last time both worked at the same time. As soon as they have one up and running the other one goes down. Frustrating.

This is correct. We spoke with one of the guys working on it the last time it was down. They are also a French brand, and all the installation/repair manuals were in French. The guys working on the escalators had to figure it out as they went.

I just wish they would reverse the up escalator in the mornings.
