So? this guy is opening a pet store 2 blocks away now? Man, if that isn't the ultimate form of intimidation.

...Rachid Madour, 37, of Pine Street was arrested early today, April 25, and charged with aggravated assault, possessions of a weapon and possession of such for an unlawful purpose and making terroristic threats in connection with the stabbing, which took place yesterday, April 24. The victim suffered a punctured lung during the incident, police say.

Madour, a former employee and business partner of the victim, has been in an ongoing dispute with the victim for nearly a year, police said...

I wonder why his attacker was charged with aggravated assault instead of attempted murder? you don't plunge a knife into somebody's left side without intending to do some serious damage.

spoke to the co-owner this morning, who told me Omar's doing really well, and should be released from the hospital in a few days.

The owner of a Downtown Jersey City pet-supplies store was stabbed inside the Newark Avenue establishment Wednesday, and police have charged a 37-year-old former employee with the crime.

Omar Bouzarari, 30, of Woodside, New York, was found inside his store, Fussy Friends on Newark Avenue, on Wednesday at around 8:30 p.m. bleeding from a stab wound under his left arm, according to a police report.

Bouzarai's lung was punctured in the stabbing, according to police spokesman Stan Eason.

Eason said the stabbing may have been the result of an ongoing dispute between the victim and Rachel Madour, the former employee charged with the crime.

Here's How You Can Support Omar

From their support website - $5000 raised so far

Fussy Friends reopens today, Friday, April 26. Stop by and show your support to Josef if you can.

On April 24th 2013, Omar, one of the owners of Fussy Friends, (A pet store in Jersey City NJ that also holds cat adoption events every week) was stabbed in the store by a madman. He was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries but I have heard that has been downgraded thankfully. We all know Omar and Josef as two sweet guys who love animals and who are trying to get a business off the ground. They are very kind people. Every Sunday they let local cat rescue groups do cat adoptions at the store and as a result they have had amazing adoption success. Since 2012 over 45 cats have found their forever homes with the help of Fussy Friends.

We would like to show both Omar and Josef of Fussy Friends that we and the community support them . Fussy Friends is a wonderful asset to Jersey City. Lets treat them like the family they are.

The money will be collected for as long as we can collect it and given to Omar to help with the mountian of medical expenses and lost wages this tragic event has caused for him. Fussy friends is an important part of our community here in Jersey City.

Omar always hooks me up with samples of cat treats. He always asks how I'm doing in more than just a cursory way, like he actually wants to hear the answer. We definitely need more small businesses like this in the area and I think it's important the community come together to support this one.

This is awful. We bring our daughter in there all the time to toddle around and play with their cat. I keep dwelling on how nice they are and how this could happen.

Is Omar the owner with the long hair? I've seen him the most and he's always so sweet to us.

We are donating regardless.

Just made a donation. Despite the fact that he may be able to find some assistance through the state I think that the work that he does supporting animal adoptions warrants assistance. I believe in supporting positive businesses and people in our community. Now if we could just close down all the dollar store and check cashing places on Newark we might make some progress here.

Thank you to those who have donated to help Omar through this difficult time.

As for GP, you have to stop blaming the victim. You make yourself appear heartless and arrogant.

This guy has now been a burglar and violent -- I doubt he just started on this path. A person's history is the best indication of their future conduct. "Mad man" is just a term that OP came up with... it is meaningless really.

Again we wish Omar the best -- and please stop trying to make this a false political football!

Maybe they did a background check. I just think this is not the thread to suggest anything else to make them feel worse (including political BS) like, "sorry this happened but if you'd done a background check", kinda shitty...and just simply, no other context, wish him well. And on that note, I donated and wish him well. He's a charming man.

Well according to Healy homeless people like being homeless.

Healy, (when) asked a question about the city?s homeless population, said, ?There are an awful lot of people who don?t want help. They like it on the streets.?

The crowd responded with loud jeers.

?Thanks a lot, folks. I appreciate it,? Healy shot back.

As much as I despise Healy and his corrupt cronies he is partially correct. There certainly are plenty of people living on the streets who would rather stay there and fend for themselves than go into a shelter. No doubt many of these folks have mental health issues and their decision making is not so great but they definitely prefer the streets to shelters or mental health facilities. The solution is not an easy one as you cannot go rounding people up unless you can show that they are in imminent danger like when the weather turns bad. Sad fact is nothing can be done by the police until the homeless person either harms or attempts to harm someone.

I don't know how many other homeless people in the neighborhood push one another around in a shopping cart and regularly beat each other up, but this thread contains more information about them:

What an awful tragedy - I didn't read anything about this today except here.

Omar can apply for victim assistance through the NJ Victim Assistance Fund. They have several services available including help with medical funds, creditors, restitution etc.

If someone on the board knows him, please direct him toward here to start:

http://www.state.nj.us/lps/dcj/victimwitness/services.htm

My prayers go to Omar for his speedy recovery...

They were robbed by a former employee the first time, he apparently had made copies of the keys.

That is good!

According to YELP -- they were robbed before -- back in 2012!

Each spring brings a new batch of crazy 'homeless' people to Newark & Grove. They lurk outside small businesses all day and all night. A few weeks ago I watched three of them engage in a heated debate for about 10 minutes ( huge screaming match) which was quite colorful. The woman that sits in the supermarket cart that is wheeled around town and is often beat up with black eyes is making her return appearance for a second season. I often wonder if our government or 'community leaders' are aware of these folks?

That's so terrible -- they are really nice! How do they know it was a "madman" rather than a robber? Was it one of those crazy homeless people that often hang around Newark Avenue & Grove Street -- or over towards St Lucy's shelter.

The East District just confirmed that the incident occurred and that they just caught the guy. No further information on the victim or suspect.
