If you're thinking of the corner of Summit and Zabriskie: Sunday was the opening of 942 Summit. It's a shared workspace/storefront for 3 businesses: Bloomsbury Sq (bath/body products), Do You Tea? (tea, obviously), and Who's Gluten-Free (baked goods). It's well worth a visit if you're interested in any of these things.

I think Mama's was located at another corner of Summit -- a block or two down.

I was walking on Summit ave about 5PM on Saturday and it looks like there is some kind of new cafe opening in what I think was Mama's location. From the quick luck my wife and I had it looked like it might be something interesting. They mentioned that there would be opening yesterday - maybe someone else in there are stopped in?

yeah, they make good food but i wouldn't call them business savvy at all.

i knew they'd be in a little trouble when i first went in and everything was so nice, menu (nice and thick paper $$$), a lot of items on the menu. a lot of money spent on cosmetic stuff, but no marketing as if people are going to just wonder in (it's on Summit too, not on Central).

like heights said, breakfast menu but aren't open during breakfast time, unpredictability in timing, and also long time in cooking. almost like they were trying to do too much all at once and had to learn the hard way.

for those of you that want to visit soon. do it not this week because their AC is broken. Order take out instead, call ahead. stuffed cabbage, the beet soup, a lot of things are delicious.

They never seem to be open when I pass by there. The owner said he would open up early for breakfast but at 8:00 AM he was not open. At night the place seems rather dark inside, not too inviting. I'm surprised that the Reporter has not done an article on this place yet. It can be tough up in the Heights.

Yea they need some marketing behind them. I haven't even heard of this place until now. Maybe the JJ or some foodie blogs could pay them a visit and write a story about them. Even some marketing in Bayonne would help seeing as there are many Polish descendants there.

I plan on giving these guys a try soon to help them out and see how good it is. Hope they stay open until then.

Just went again today. Pretty sad news is that business seems to be struggling a little due to low turnout.

I think the bottom line is that they are delicious, authentic, and offer a new flavor to the heights that we haven't had in a while.

It's sad because it just needs more marketing. (like posting at the polish store on Central, which they haven't done yet)

I, for one, will be posting a good review (based on food) on yelp:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/mamas-cuisine-jersey-city

If people have had their food and like it, I encourage you to support this place by posting a review as well.

Hope they survive!

My spouse and I have been to Mama's twice so far: first for coffee and cake, then back a few days later for dinner (potato pancakes, dumplings). Everything was really tasty, and the owner is super-friendly and hard-working. I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

I went here for first time last night.

The pork chops were excellent. I also had the potato pancakes which despite what I read below were amazing - actually my favorite part of the meal. The soup and the 2 cakes were good as well.

This is a good place to have nearby!

PRICING IS SO CHEAP!!!Quote:

A new Ukranian eat-in / take-out restaurant opened up Wednesday. They serve an Eastern European based menu similar to Polish/Russian foods. Good comfort food such as Borscht soup, potato pancakes, pork chops, stuffed cabbage, baked chicken, sausage. Desserts: sweet doughnuts, apple pie, coffee cakes, and European pastries. The place has a simple atmosphere with a few tables but the family is doing all the cooking in the back room.
Location: 992 Summit Ave. corner of Bowers St.
(201) 577-2929 and they deliver.

How the pricing? I find Sava a little steep for lunch.

Wonderful borcht. I had a rich pastry of multilayered chocolate with thin cake. Fab. Dont order FRIED potatoe pancakes, ( latkes) mr blood tv, take them out in the cold to eat at home, and then complain they are heavy. Duh. This is Eastern European food. These are the people (the eastern front) who stopped Hitler when no one else could and beat Napoleon Bonaparte. How? With mud, permafrost, slaughter of millions, and....POTATOES, ONIONS, and OIL. When they could find anything to eat whatsoever. .... Highly enjoyable little place. Would upload pics but cant figure out how. HAIL THE HUMBLE ROOT VEGETABLE!

I only live one block away and based on the positive words said about this place decided to drop in last night after work and try it.

The people who run this place are very very nice, but a little disorganized. It is definitely a cute little place, but no apparent source of heating, so being as cold as it was, everyone was doing take out. They screwed up my order but were very sorry about not making my sandwich, but I was patient and understanding. I also got an order of potato pancakes to go as well.

Oh boy, as I am not that familiar with eastern european food...is this stuff supposed to be "that" greasy? Everything was in a layer of oil or grease.

Needless to say I barely finished the sandwich and was turned off by the oily greasy pancakes so I'll give them a chance maybe in a few weeks to improve whatever situation caused this (the cook? the confusion over multiple orders and trying to keep customers happy maybe by rushing the cooking?).

So not a thumbs up...but they do appear to be very nice people.

Just ate here. Really great and can't wait to go back! The borscht and the chenaya soup were both delicious. Stuffed cabbage was easily the best I've ever had. My companion got the baked chicken and it was awesome. I am sooo full.

Also ate lunch here this afternoon. The chenaya soup was excellent for a cold day. Garlicy and thick. The owner said they are currently serving about 80% of the menus and most of the desserts right now and will have everything up and running within a couple of weeks.

This place is great. Eaten here three times in the pat five days
(including lunch today). Family run and the food is literally cooked to order so it always fresh.

Pretty affordable too. I didnt know I liked Eastern European food until this place opened.

Support it so they stay open! Its a great change of pace from all the Latin food (as much as I love Latin food).

Just stuffed myself at Mama's Cuisine and met one of the owners, Andrew. Really nice guy, very attentive and friendly.

I had the borscht, pork chops (more like thin cutlet) and Napoleon cake for dessert. It was excellent. The soup was especially delicious. (The red pepper sauce for the pork chops was fantastic!) Lots of food, I totally ate too much.

Really great experience, I hope they do well. We really needed a place like this in the Heights and I hope they are around for a while. I will be going back to try the Varenyky (Pierogies) soon.

My meal, plus a can of coke was $15.50.

The owner was really happy to hear that people are already talking about it online.

I just went there and got lunch.

I got a big meal, with Biliash (an entr?e sized Empanada), a bowl of Chenahy (beef, white beans, and potato stew) and Salad Olivje (a rich potato salad with sausage in it).

This set me back $10, and it was easily some of the most delicious food in my recent past.

Totally agreed. I think the price is perfect for starting out. After it gets a base following or it's stability - then they can raise it by a buck or two.

REALLY nice people, and the guy said his family invested everything in this and it's his family's dream. I hope it goes well for them.

No pics from me, but it's not a "romantic" place. it's just a eatery, nice, simple, clean. Unless your date is a good sport - don't go on a first date. Mine is a great sport and loves good food, so we made it a date night to support local business.
