Thanks for all the helpful and colorful replies. @user1111, there are a lot of different people in Jersey City looking for whatever accommodation fit their needs. Just because I happen to be looking for something out of your range doesn't make me a DB.

Sorry, That was not meant for you.

Seems like New York renters have finally gotten the real meaning of "Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free"

I just got my lease renewal from the landlord and my rent went up 7% for a 1 bd/ 1 bth to $2300 in the building by the Grove path. Anyone know of a similar building nearby charging less for a 1bd/ 1 bth? Or any buildings offering free month when signing? I've looked at apartments near Newport but the Newport stop is just not as convenient as the Grove stop. Thanks in advance.

@Monmouth man, for al intent and purposes the PATH is running from JC to NYC as it did pre-Sandy. The weekend closures of the wtc line is due to construction at the freedom tower and wtc PATH stop in Manhattan. As for that scary walk thru the ghetto from jsq to Montgomery Ave., honestly stop being a lazy pussy. I've done it for years, multiple times per day and have never had an incident. Guess you're scared you'll run into me.

HAHAHA! The OP lives in a beautiful highrise at the Grove St Path. They can be on the train in 2 minutes and walk to any number of restaurants and shops within a few minutes. The Beacon is in the ghetto and there is nothing to walk to. I'd never walk to the Path from there, too far and to scary. Yes there is a shuttle, but it is not 24/7. It's like a ghost town over there. Anyone who lives in The Beacon and pays that much for rent is a fool.
IF I had the money the OP has to spend on rent I'd move to Brooklyn in a heartbeat...assuming the OP works in the city. The Path sucks, and according to the WSJ article that was posted on here, it will be a LONG time before it is running the way it was pre-Sandy.

It's not as if they are buying at the Beacon. I feel bad for the owners there because they have to live side by side with transient renters that reside in absentee landlord units of this institutionalized version of an apartment building.

so much negativity - i like brooklyn but isn't it getting overrated and people say the PATH sucks, u ever try getting from brooklyn to mnahtaan on the weekends (versus normally predictable PATH trains).

for $1,950, perhaps one has an amazing view and nice ammenities? give that area 5-10 years after the addition of new towers/new blood, and maybe y'all be singing a different tune.

I remember 10 years ago, when some of my manhattan friends wouldn't be caught dead in NJ, let alone jersey city.....TIMES CHANGE

I would think 1 bedrooms in downtown JC are readily available for under $2K. Is that not the case? I am not really in the market right now.

expats from the east are happy to house as many as they can within a dwelling, which is much easier to do so in a brownstone then a highrise apartment, where everyone is watching and might report them for overcrowding

Look for owners renting their units out in smaller brownstones in the area. The new large apartment buildings are usually way more expensive.

Not big luxury buildings - but I know of several ground floor (street level) units on Grand that were flooded but have been/are being renovated. You might consider if not afraid of future 100-year flood events. Feel free to contact me off the forum (username at gmail).

I've seen 1Bd units in Liberty harbor on Trulia going for $2100 - $2200. A bit more walk than where you are now... But they have a pool in the summer
