There was a discussion about extending the light rail over the new Bayonne Bridge and perhaps even onto portions of the old north shore line.
The Bayonne Bridge was going to have to be raised to accomodate New Panamax class ships. The low height was already diverting some freight to southern ports. The original plan being discussed called for razing the bridge and replacing it with a new one that would include multimodal transport like a light rail line. With the Panama Canal widening project well underway, increasing amounts of freight being sent south, and infrastructure investments required for either Port Newark/Elizabeth or elsewhere, the decision was made to raise the existing bridge rather than raze it. So as they, everyone is SOL. Maybe better luck next time the bridge needs to be replaced.

given plans to extend the light rail further south, i was wondering why they don't extend it to staten island. but more importantly, i wonder why nj transit does own a station in union city or north bergen so that light rail riders can transfer.
