In a move that will delight commuters, local shoppers and Jersey City business owners, NJ Transit and A&C Bus will take up the bus routes that Red & Tan bus company announced last week it is discontinuing, and there will be no lapse in service, state and local officials said today.

THIS is the solution? The 99s route will be running on a very limited schedule so you can't travel to the city between the hours of 10am and 3pm and you can't get home after 10pm?

To hell with this. I need to sell my apartment in this shitty town and move back to NY where the transit system actually works.

@DanL - when you are elected Mayor, you will have your work cut out for you. With any luck, I WON'T be around to waste time, money, or energy supporting you though...

This is great news, but the headline is misleading. There won't be any overnight service (after 10 p.m.) or off-peak service to/from Manhattan. Hard to believe, especially since the lines are often long for the 10 - midnight buses.

NJT is struggling to keep up with demand on their own routes.

The only question about the successor to the 99S is whether it runs rush hours only or as the 99S runs now.

Last night three neighborhood groups held a joint meeting to address this issue: Lafayette United Neighborhood Association (LUNA), Morris Canal Community Development Corp., and Communipaw Avenue Block Association (CABA). Forty or fifty people met at the Monumental Baptist Church and there was a Spanish language interpreter present.

Deputy Mayor Kabili Tayari spoke, and there were representatives from Bayonne and the transportation union as well. Tayari indicated that solutions were being discussed for the current problem and that things looked good. But no papers have been signed, much less sealed and delivered. He also said, and others agreed, that this is a chronic problem and must be addressed as such. We can?t limp along putting band aids on top of band aids.

DanL is right. We need a permanent solution. And we?re going to have to demand our leaders, politicians and businessmen, to come up with one. They aren?t going to do it themselves. We need to hold their feet to the fire.

what is the real long term solution?

NJ Transit passing it off on another independent bus company?

no, it is time for a permanent solution and for NJ Transit to take on the route and integrate with NJ Transit's bus system, passes/cards and all. fix it, no more band aids.

this is another example of our city not being proactive since the last bus crises.

Wrong, every other #10 goes up Central Avenue into Port authority. (Has for several years).

Edited to add that I was just ON that bus yesterday. If you go to the Coach web site (I specifically searched for COACH BUS and then put in JERSEY CITY to NYC,
you'll see that the #10 and the 99S follow the same route (In fact, there is only 1 schedule. That's why the Red & Tan guy said take the 10. Of course, their service is lousy, but surprise, the JJ got it wrong.

An article from today's Jersey Journal:
http://www.nj.com/jjournal-news/index ... wners_on_jersey_city.html

The 10 only runs as far as Journal Square; it doesn't go into the city.

They are not cancelling the #10 which follows the same route as 99S. In fact, I haven't seen a 99S in months during rush hour in the morning at least. I called them...

Exactly right. I can guarantee that the 99S (or a route similar to it) will exist after 11/6.

I heard it wasn't a ridership issue, but a business plan related decision for Red and Tan. I heard they want to focus more on the megabus type market between major cities. They are also cancelling the #4 route. Another bus company and/or NJ Transit will likely pick up the routes somehow. We hope.

I think it's ridiculous that they're blaming the loss of the 10/99s routes to NYC on a lack of ridership, since I've yet to be on the buses to or from NYC when they're not packed to the gills--especially late at night. If anything, they need to run a few more buses on the route, particularly on the weekends, since that's when I've noticed the service is frustratingly spotty. I would use it more if it showed up on schedule.

I live in McGinley, and having a bus from NYC that stops on my corner has been a lifesaver for me many nights, especially in bad weather when it's impossible to get a cab from JSQ, and waiting there for a bus isn't much better. I feel very sorry, though, for those in the Heights for whom this bus is the most cost-effective and convenient option. A bus that's full upon leaving PABT, pretty much clears out by the time we hit JSQ, so i'd say that's the majority of their NYC to JC ridership.

not good. continued deterioration in bus service is the wrong direction - the city must work to have NJ Transit assume the route.

Since the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail services such a small percentage of Jersey City and Hudson County residents who don't live on the waterfront, Coach USA picked up a lot of the slack for connecting people who don't live in Downtown or Journal Square to New York City. Without this infrastructure we will see very quick drop-off in home prices and renters who work in Manhattan will quickly look elsewhere as getting to work every day becomes even more difficult.

From Greenville up to the Heights, you will see negative effects from the drop-off in transit service.

I would recommend that people begin to organize immediately and to contact their elected officials to let them know how crucial services like this are to the well-being of our neighborhoods: http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml

If NJ Transit doesn't fill the gap we'll have a major problem on our hands.

Here's the notice:
"Trans-Hudson Express, Inc. DBA Red & Tan Tours, which is the operator of Bus Routes #4 and #99-S authorized by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in MC-324537 and US DOT Docket No. 701300 hereby serves notice of its intent to discontinue service on both of these Bus Routes effective at Midnight on November 6, 2011."

This route also operates as route #10, so I'm not sure if that's being eliminated also. If so, that means a longer commute to New York from the Heights via NJ Transit's 123.

i've always considered taking that late nights from NYC into the heights, as it runs 24hrs on central ave when the commuter vans stop running. alas i've never actually gotten around to taking it.

A notice was posted on the bus today saying that the 99S (Bayonne/Jersey City to NYC) is being eliminated on Nov. 6, 2011. Has anyone else heard more about this?
