Jersey City man gets 38 years for 2 rapes in 2011

By Michaelangelo Conte | The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal
February 27, 2015 at  5:28 PM

JERSEY CITY -- Two 19-year consecutive sentences were meted out today to a city man who brutally raped two women as they returned home from work in 2011.

"The best and fairest way to protect the citizens of this state is the make sure you don't ever get out," Hudson County Superior Court Judge Joseph Isabella said of Antquion Miller, 37, of Monticello Avenue. "You are dangerous. You are dangerous to people walking on the street."

Miller, who pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated sexual assault in December, had 24 involvements with the criminal justice system as a juvenile. As an adult, he had eight prior arrests and four criminal convictions for crimes including aggravated assault and two counts of robbery.

Authorities have arrested a man in connection with two brutal Jersey City rapes, officials announced this morning.
Antquion Miller, 33, of Monticello Avenue was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault, robbery and kidnapping for the Harrison Avenue rape in March, officials say.

Miller was also charged with aggravated sexual assault, robbery and kidnapping for the McGinley Square rape on Sunday, officials said.

Bail has been set at $500,000 for each incident and Miller is scheduled to appear in Central Judicial Processing Court later today.

Check back in with Hudson Now for more on this incident.
UPDATE: Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor Debra Simon said the arrest was made after a concerned citizen gave officials important information.

She also noted that the arrest as the result of "an amazing collaborative effort between the Special Victims Unit and Jersey City police. A lot of the hard work was due to the efforts of the Jersey City police."

Jersey Journal reader's tip helps authorities in hunt for rape suspect

Friday, May 27, 2011
MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A Jersey Journal reader who saw images of a suspected rapist in yesterday's newspaper gave a tip to investigators, which is expected to lead to charges being filed, officials said yesterday.

Based on the information "The investigation is very active," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday of the probe into Sunday's rape at Fairmount and Bergen avenues, as well as a March 23 rape at Harrison and Bergen avenues. "We are anticipating an arrest."

The images of the suspect in yesterday's newspaper were captured by security cameras in the aftermath of the vicious rape of a 25-year-old woman who was placed in a choke hold and dragged into her building at 1:30 a.m. Sunday off McGinley Square, DeFazio said.

During the attack, a male resident of the building came upon the scene and the rapist fled, DeFazio said, adding that the images capture the suspected rapist as he is leaving the building.

The suspect fled northbound on Bergen Avenue toward Montgomery Street and, at least at first, had no shirt or hat on as he fled, DeFazio said, adding that he was wearing maroon sweatpants. The attacker is described as black, about 30 years old, and standing about 5-foot-7.

Investigators said the same man may be responsible for the rape in March, which occurred as the 34-year-old victim was returning home just after midnight. She was placed in a choke hold and dragged into an alley where she was savagely sexually assaulted, officials said.

That attacker on March 23 was also described as black, about 30 years old, and standing about 5-foot-7, the prosecutor said.

The images that ran in yesterday's newspaper were provided by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. Investigators did not provide additional details on the identity of the suspect or when an arrest might occur.

Anyone with information on the crimes is asked to call the Prosecutor's Office's Special Victims Unit at (201) 915-1234 or Jersey City Police Department at (201) 547-JAIL.

Suspect identified in Jersey City rape cases

Updated at 04:08 PM today

Web produced by Bob Monek, Eyewitness News

JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- Authorities in Jersey City say they have identified a suspect wanted in a pair of brutal rapes.

A surveillance picture released on Wednesday produced a tip call that produced the name of the suspect, investigators said. He is not in custody at this time.

They also linked the same suspects to both rapes for the first time today.

The prosecutor's office says the man attacked a woman from behind and forced her into a building on Bergen Avenue near Fairmont, where he raped her early Sunday morning. Eventually, he was scared off by a neighbor.

The woman told police her attacker was a black man about 5'7, physically fit wearing a short sleeve shirt and a red baseball cap.

He was caught on surveillance camera, shirtless without a cap.

About a half mile away from where Sunday's rape happened, another woman was brutally attacked back in March. She was grabbed from behind and dragged into an alley where she was raped for more than 30 minutes. She gave police a very similar description.

Resized Image Hudson County prosecutor releases images of suspect in two vicious Jersey City rapes; man seen in security video showing aftermath of attack on woman early Sunday morning at Bergen and Fairmount avenues
View Larger Map Thursday, May 26, 2011 By MICHAELANGELO CONTE JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Security images of a suspect in two Jersey City rapes were released yesterday by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, which is seeking the public's help identifying the fiend. "The images are not perfect, but I think if someone knows the suspect, he will be able to identify him," said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio. The images were captured by security cameras in the aftermath of the vicious rape of a 25-year-old woman who was placed in a choke hold and dragged into her building at 1:30 a.m. Sunday at Fairmount and Bergen avenues, DeFazio said. During the course of the attack, a male resident of the building came upon the scene and the rapist fled, DeFazio said, adding that the images capture the rapist as he is leaving the building. In one image, he is seen pointing at the victim, perhaps threatening her. The suspect fled northbound on Bergen Avenue toward Montgomery Street and, at least at first, he had no shirt or hat on as he fled, DeFazio said, adding that he was wearing maroon sweatpants. The attacker is described as black, about 30 years old, and standing about 5-foot-7, the prosecutor said. When he first approached the victim on Sunday, he was wearing a red baseball cap and what is believed to have been a short-sleeved shirt, DeFazio said. Special Victims Unit investigators suspect the man is responsible for another rape in Jersey City that occurred in March. "We think that it could very well be the same perpetrator," DeFazio said, noting the similarity in the description of the suspects. On March 23, just after midnight, a 34-year-old woman was returning home at Harrison and Bergen avenues when a man put her in a choke hold and dragged her into an alley, where she was savagely sexually assaulted, officials said at the time. Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to call the Prosecutor's Office's Special Victims Unit at (201) 915-1234 or Jersey City Police Department at (201) 547-JAIL.

Police search for Jersey City rapist

Updated at 06:07 PM today

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness News

JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- There's been another vicious sexual assault in Jersey City.

It's the second recent attack in the same neighborhood.

Hudson County investigators are looking into a possible link between this latest attack and a similar crime in late March.

Women Eyewitness News talked to Tuesday are taking steps to protect themselves from the serial rapist.

"I'm really petrified," said Kimberly Conyers, a Jersey City resident.

Kimberly Conyers opens her daycare center at 6 a.m. most days, but she won't be unlocking the door alone anymore.

"I'm going to have my brother walk me because it's very scary," Conyers said.

Business owners and residents all along Bergen Avenue near Fairmount in Jersey City are nervous Tuesday, after a young woman was brutally attacked early Sunday morning at around 1:30 a.m.

She was walking home when a man grabbed her from behind and demanded money, then he dragged her to a quiet spot, and raped her.

He ran off when a neighbor came by.

"Some friend told me to buy the pepper spray but now I think I need to do it," said Maria Belliard, a Jersey City resident.

Investigators say the suspect is a black man, 25-35 years old, standing 5'7" who is in good physical shape.

He was last seen wearing a dark colored t-shirt, a red cap, maroon sweatpants and sneakers.

The description of both the suspect and the attack sound eerily similar to another rape in Jersey City back in March.

In that case, the suspect was on a bike on Harrison Avenue near Bergen Avenue at around 1 a.m. when he put his victim in a chokehold, dragged her into an alley, and raped her.

Monique Smith Andrews owns a salon nearby.

"I instantly thought of my clients because when they leave late at night they will need someone to walk them to their cars because you never know," Smith Andrews said.

There were surveillance cameras in the area of the most recent attack, and police are hoping to release an image soon to ask for the public's help in finding this attacker.

Even with race added, that leaves a lot of room for guessing. What about a real physical description? Does he have long hair, short hair, or no hair? Blond, brunette, redhead? dark skinned, fair skinned? How about a beard, mustache, clean shaven. Just saying black or white guy in maroon sweat pants isn't going to help too much. Of course, the unfortunate victim may be too traumatized to give any description other than what we have.

We'll know when the suspect is arrested.

First of all you should say "if" the suspect is arrested. Secondly, at that point the information is useless.

Better to let him go then hurt anybody's feelings by conjuring up negative stereotypes.

Jersey City woman raped as she enters building, cops say; public's help sought

Published: Monday, May 23, 2011, 1:05 PM Updated: Monday, May 23, 2011, 1:26 PM
Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Jersey City police and county Special Victims Unit investigators are seeking the public's help in identifying a man wanted for the rape of a city woman off McGinley Square yesterday, officials said today.

"He grabbed her in a chokehold as she was entering her building," said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio of the aggravated sexual assault at Bergen and Fairmount avenues in the early morning hours.

"During the course of the attack, which went on for a period of time, a neighbor came upon the scene and the suspect was apparently scared off," the prosecutor said, noting that he also stole cash from the victim.

The male neighbor called police and the victim, described as "a young adult female," was taken to Christ Hospital and later released, the prosecutor said.

The shirtless suspect fled on Bergen Avenue and fled north toward Montgomery Street, DeFazio said, adding that he was wearing maroon sweatpants. He is described as being about 30 years old, physically fit, and standing about 5-feet-7, the prosecutor said.

"Obviously this case is a priority for the Special Victim's Unit and the Jersey City Police Department," said DeFazio, adding that security video from the area of the crime has been recovered by detectives. "Hopefully forensic evidence can be analyzed."

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the Prosecutor's Office's Special Victims Unit at (201) 915-1234 or Jersey City Police Department at (201) 547-JAIL.
