thanks to all who came out and voted.

an even a bigger thank you for all the volunteers who were out on election day helping to get the vote out.

and of course congratulations to Carol Harrison-Arnold, Sue Mack and Marvin Adams for not just their election victory, but their commitment to serve our schools and our city.

we are fortunate to now have a board of education that I believe will represent, be inclusive and responsive of needs of our children, parents/caregivers and taxpayers.

thank you Vidya Gangadin for engaging and empowering our public school families, voter by voter, giving them the voice that I know Carol, Sue and Marvin will listen to.

for those who did not vote, contributing to the poor turnout, damn it, please vote!

Mouse,
We agree that a change is needed. We don't agree on the team to effect that change.

Vote Youssef 8a & Gangadin 7a

Holdon....

Actually, this vote showed that Sue is independent and votes based on her best judgment (at the time).

However, I think you will see that when of a majority of the BOE is comprised of individuals not beholden to the Epps administration that there will be more consensus, on a wide range of issues.

Right now, we need a team that can work together to effect change.

Ms Taggart,
Allow me to correct you. 2 of 3 Fulop candidates said to say "No" to the budget. Ms. Mack ever the union flunky voted "Yes" to the budget. Conflict anyone?

If you vote No on the budget- you are sending it to the City Council- You remember them don't you?- The people who handed out abatements like candy-which is why we have high school taxes now.
Don't hold your breath waiting for your taxes to decrease if you vote NO.

I agree, with your choice (partly). You do make a point about 'not' good teachers. There are around 1100 teachers not assigned to classrooms but collect teachers salary with full benefits. I have asked many times, to do something about this, at least acknowledge.... They all act as if they don't know or this doesn't exist. We pay to hire substitute teachers as well as these 'unassigned' teachers. See below one of Sue Mack's postings in Face Book's Jersey City Public School Teachers' page:
-----------------
Suzanne Mack
Upstairs in my bedroom I have over 1,000 letter you wrote me last spring when you asked for my support . I have always supported the Jersey City Teachers and now I need your support in helping me get these two outstanding new individuals elected. Given the problems in Trenton and Claremont Ave I believe this is the most important election we have ever faced. I need both of these people who may not have the name recgonition to just have that happen

Suzanne Mack is endorsing Carol Harrison Arnold 2A, and Marvin Adames 10A, Im the 5A in the equation. Please spread the word.

Back Sue Mack, Marvin Adames and Carol Harrison Arnold Wednesday April 27th 7am-9pm

Whom is SHE loyal to, kids, tax payers? Kids don't VOTE!

I guess tenure is the live wire that will kill any candidate who opposes it becuause such a high percentage of teachers union members vote in this election.

One New Jersey union representative was even blunter about the work his organization does to keep bad teachers in the classroom, saying: ?I?ve gone in and defended teachers who shouldn?t even be pumping gas.?

In ten years, only about 47 out of 100,000 teachers were actually terminated from New Jersey?s schools.

on a sidebar--did anyone review the top goals of the candidates? hardly anyone mentioned increasing education outcomes. just amazing. there were goals for "differentiated curriculum," "more administrative presence in the hallways," "better race relations," "applying green concepts to the schools" but scant attention paid to what schools are supposed to do. do these people think schools are some day care center or some place to experiment with their new pet social experiments. what a joke. the schools are in such disrepair that the leadership must be uprooted to change the trajectory. all of them are more concerned with what's good for the unions instead of what's good for the kids. i doubt that will ever happen so what i'll do is move out to the suburbs once i have kids that are anywhere near school-age so their educational outcomes aren't restrained by teacher union centered education model of jersey city.

On the budget/tax issue, I got a mailer encouraging me to vote no to the budget (no big surprise to anyone on this forum that will be exactly how I vote.) Interestingly that came from the three candidates who were endorsed by Fulop and later picked up by the union. Makes you think that the union is losing some of their relative power...

I do not know any candidate who has raised "tens of thousands" of dollars. I believe the Fulop team has raised something over $10,000 (including in kind contributions such as the video ads) between the three of them.

I assume Ms. Gangadin's handouts and banner ads are not for free, though I also don't think they are that costly. I don't begrudge her for spending some cash or raising some cash.

As for endorsements, I don't think the endorsement of the JCEA or a local councilman is a bad thing. I am not sure why Vidya's endorsement's from yourself, Angel Valentin, Sandra Cunningham, Charles Mainor, and the JCCPTO are any different. One can form opinions as to the endorsers (I have high opinions of people who have gone different ways on the endorsements) but there is no one endorsement that strikes me as inherently "cleaner" than the others. To be fair: JCEA has an interest in the composition of the school board in that they have to negotiate with the school board. But it's also true that it speaks for teachers and can be an effective collaborator in improving education just like Parent-Teacher groups. In any event, it was clear in this case that the JCEA was not the lead dog in the hunt when it came to selecting candidates for endorsement.

In my years of involvement in civic affairs, I've found that those who claim support of "the people" mean "the people that agree with us" and those who claim others are supported by "special interests" mean "the people that don't agree with us."

Ms. Gangadin is not a bad candidate and has run a credible campaign. I hope that she continues to contribute to improving JC public schools, whether as a board member or by continuing her current activities. I also suspect that, unless there is some bad blood that results from the campaign or some other animosity I haven't heard of, she probably would pick up the support of many who support Fulop's team next year.

What I do think is pretty obvious is that Ms. Gangadin and the Fulop endorsed team are both appealing to voters with the same mindset, and that such a choice could lead to someone who both sides agree is more objectionable taking a spot. As I mentioned, I think it is likely that Ms. Gangadin and Mr. Adames end up dividing votes, although I know some people who might instead defect from Suzanne Mack.

Be clear, I am not saying that the Fulop endorsed candidates have any "first dibs" on these votes, and one could say that they are peeling of Ms. Gangadin rather than vice versa. But the danger of a split vote is pretty apparent, and not papered over by the fact that one claims Ms. Gangadin is "only supported by people like you and I."

Recognizing, of course, that the "I" in that long sentence lobbied publicly to be considered for a council seat last year and has declared intentions of running for mayor in 2013, per the state's ELEC filings. Oh, and to the long list of "taxpayers, homeowners, and innkeepers" the endorsement of Sen. Sandra Cunningham should be added.

I think the concern is that Vidya will split the vote with one of the Fulop endorsed slate (likely Marvin Adames), and allow Frances Thompson to slide back in.

Angel Valentin was supported by Fulop in the last board election. Surely Valentin's support of candidates other than those on the "Fulop slate" shows that being supported by Steve does not mean obedience to Steve.

Dear Editor:

I applaud the letters that were written by Vidya Gangadin...
I believe their energies will be invested in our students. To my family members, friends and supports on April 27 please vote for Vidya Gangadin and Aury Masa-Nunez for their year round commitment and who are true stakeholders to our students.

Sincerely,

Angel L. Valentin

Read more: Hudson Reporter - Don?t be fooled

Why would Angel Valentin endorse an "independent" candidate? Did he do so at the request of Frances O. Thompson, and as a way to brown nose the superintendent and the machine backed council majority? Angel Valentin votes consistently along party lines and from what I can tell brings absolutely nothing to the table.

Don't know who Dan Levin is and can't understand why there is so much talk about him but I will say this: there is an obvious bias with the majority of posters being fulop supporters. Good thing there are other people that don't follow him blindly and vote for his candidates just because he says so.
Also, I dont see commercials and literature with Dan Levin's name all over it for who he is supporting.

Just dont walk too close to fulop's candidates....you may end up getting tangled in their string.

Dear Editor:

I applaud the letters that were written by Vidya Gangadin & Aury Masa-Nunez which were published on Sunday, April 10 in the Jersey City Reporter.

As a parent of public school children and 20 nephews and nieces in the school district I believe these two candidates have the ability and the heart to deliver to the students of the Jersey City Public Schools. I believe in the involvement of parents in the decision making and I believe these two mothers demonstrate that commitment. The foundation of education in our Jersey City Public Schools begins with the children, teachers and the parents who should be the driving force and instrumental in bringing positive change to our school district. I believe these two parents from what I have witnessed at the recent debates can contribute to the turning around of our schools.

To my supporters and friends please don?t be fooled or duped by candidates who I called ?Ground Hog? candidates who pop up out of the hole every February to answer to the call of education. Some of these candidates who are invisible throughout the process and clueless to the various challenges and issues we face as parents.

I believe these two individuals will be devoted as demonstrated in their letters from the heart to the success of our schools. This is why as a parent and current board member I support these two candidates who will contribute to the diversity of our district. I believe their energies will be invested in our students. To my family members, friends and supports on April 27 please vote for Vidya Gangadin and Aury Masa-Nunez for their year round commitment and who are true stakeholders to our students.

Sincerely,

Angel L. Valentin

Dear Editor:

As a parent of two public school children, taxpayer, homeowner and longtime advocate for good government policies, I am asking the voters of Jersey City to support Vidya Gangadin, 7A for the Jersey City Board of Education.

Our schools face tremendous challenges with failing test scores, low high school graduation rates and a top heavy bureaucracy forcing teacher layoffs. Everyday parents send their children to school with concerns that their child is being challenged academically, is in a safe environment and is healthy. Taxpayers are concerned about their increasing burden due to continued reductions in state aid and misguided tax abatement practices.

Why Vidya?

Vidya Gangadin is a finance professional and active parent with four children attending public schools.

Vidya has worked as financial analyst and operations manager with experience managing budgets, reviewing and bidding out goods and services, identifying operational efficiencies and improvements, prioritizing the utilization of limited resources and implementing best practices. She understands the need to seek out and cut costs while protecting critical core classroom resources, maintaining class size and finding alternatives to teacher layoffs.

She is a parent leader and volunteer serving as a PTA Vice President, on the Citywide Advisory Council, the School Leadership Committee and Jersey City Coalition of Parent Teacher Organizations. Vidya is a true stakeholder with a first-hand perspective and experience in tackling the challenges within our schools.

Vidya Gangadin will serve as a necessary voice for the parents, grandparents and caregivers of the 28,000 children who attend public school in Jersey City. She will stand for her children, my children and yours.

Vote 7-A for Mom!

Sincerely,

Daniel Levin

@ecinjc, thanks for your answer. Those are good accomplishments for an involved parent working in her school, and I'm sure Vidya is rightly proud of them. They're exactly what you'd hope for from a parent getting involved at a local level, and sound like really good work.

I hope you or Vidya or someone will also be able to provide an answer about her budget analysis.

Thanks again.

Not really. Ms. Gangadin has little chance of winning. And the Fulop candidates are eminently qualified,
